    Mumbai, 4 May 2019: Over 500 racers from across the country will compete in the Ajmera IndiKarting Series here on Sunday, including a number of national champions and internationally-experienced racers.

    Youngsters from Kashmir, Nashik, Kerala, Gujarat, Haryana, Jalgaon and Vijayawada, among other cities, took part in the qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday and are now set for the grand finale at the Ajmera IndiKarting circuit in Wadala, the only racing circuit in Mumbai.

    IndiKarting, the country’s largest karting series, conceived by the king of karting Rayomand Banajee and organised under the aegis of FMSCI, aims at promoting motorsport at the grassroots level while also giving established drivers the platform to showcase their talent.

    The popular series will see the serious racers compete in the Pro Category in three different age groups, while those with lesser or no experience can take part in the Inter-School, Inter-College or Corporate, Amateur and Master (30 years & above) category, as per their qualification.

    There is a special category for women too, though girls and women can also participate in any category against men. Motorsport, as is well known, is one of only two global sports that allows women to compete against men as equals.

    “Mumbai is seeing competitive racing for the first time in 10 years. The high number of entries shows that the city is into this sport. We have made it easier and affordable for them by allowing them to simply turn up at the track and compete,” Rayomand Banajee, 8-time National Champion & founder of IndiKarting, said.

    “Mumbai has a shortage of good sporting facilities. We are happy that we have been able to set up motorsport infrastructure in Wadala. This is just the beginning as we at Ajmera Group propose many more such facilities,” Atul  Ajmera, Director of Ajmera Group of companies, declared.

    The finals of all categories will take place on Sunday from 3pm to 7pm. Spectator entry is free.

    Bengaluru, 3 Nov 2018: Keen competition is on cards as the National Karting Championship reaches the final round of the 2018 season. The number of competitors may be less but the competition remains high as champions in all the three classes will be decided only on the final day on Sunday with 89 points at stake.

    The fifth and final round of the Meco Motorsports FMSCI National Rotax Max Karting Championship 2018 began here at the Meco Kartopia track on Saturday with practice sessions and heats run in Micro Max, Junior Max, and Senior Max classes.

    Shahan Ali M0hsin at Meco Kartopia

    In the Senior Max, Debarun Banerjee of MSports is leading the championship with 346 points while teammate A Balaprasanth is on 331 and Rayo Racing’s Danesh Vakharia garnered 316. Banerjee won three of the four finals and two pre-finals in the previous four rounds with Bala Prasanth winning the third round final. Danish won the pre-finals in the third round but failed to finish the final thus losing crucial points and is now 30 points behind the leader. All the three will be going all out on Sunday with fourth-placed Shahan Ali Mohsin, also of MSports, breathing on their necks in fourth place with 314 points.

    Shahan is comfortably placed in the Junior Max section, though. Winning six races from 8 starts, the MSports karter has 351 points ahead of Mihir Suman Avalakki, who is the only other winner taking both the pre-finals and finals in the second round. He is on 332 points and a further five points behind in third is K Suriya Varathan, also of MSports and Birel Art’s M R Rishon is on 325 points.

    Ishaan Madesh ends a session on Saturday at Meco Kartopia in Bengaluru. Ishaan is leading the Micro Max championship table with 351 points

    In Micro Max class, Madesh brothers, Ishaan, and Rohaan of Peregrine Racing lead the championship with 351 and 345 points respectively with teammate Sathvik Raju in third place with 320 points. Birel Art’s Abhay M is closely placed in the fourth spot with 318 followed by another Peregrine karter Jagrat Detroja on 313 points. Though Mathematically any of the top five can win the title, the fight is essentially between the two brothers where the younger Madesh did some smart manoeuvres in the previous round and is just six points behind. After a shaky start in the first two rounds, Ishaan Madesh dominated the Micromax category winning all the four races in the previous two rounds. He lost both the races in the second round and the pre-finals in the first round but recovered to take the lead. But with only six points separating the brothers, Sunday will witness a keen battle.

    The pre-finals winner will take home 34 points while a win the final is worth 55 points. The numbers on the grid may be less but no inch is given as the season comes to the business end.

    Adria (Italy), 16 July 2018: India’s Ruhaan Alva came up with a fighting drive to finish on the podium with a fifth place in the sixth round of the Easykart Italia Championship at the Adria International Raceway here on Sunday. It was Ruhaan’s second consecutive podium finish following his first runner-up place in the previous round.

    Ruhaan, the 12-year old schoolboy from Bengaluru and supported by Play Factory, Sona Miller and Birel Art India, started the 100cc category final in 17th spot but cut through the field to finish fifth.

    The top five finishers were presented with trophies on the podium.

    Earlier, in the pre-final, Ruhaan had shown impressive pace to move from 12th to fourth before getting involved in an incident that pushed him down to 15th which put him 17th on the grid for the final race that followed.

    “I was quite happy with my pace through the weekend and was hopeful of strong result. Unfortunately, I could not qualify higher than 17th for the final, but had a good run to finish fifth which put me on the podium,” said Ruhaan who is among the six drivers selected by the prestigious International Easykart Driver Talent program organized by Birel ART in Italy.

    Ruhaan Alva’s next round is in September after the summer break in the championship.

    San Giuseppe (Italy), 25 June 2018: India’s Ruhaan Alva enjoyed a fairly successful weekend with a podium finish in the fifth round of the Easykart Italian Championship at the Circuit Pomposa, near here on Sunday.

    Ruhaan, a 12-year old schoolboy from Bengaluru, supported by Play Factory and Birel Art India, showed good pace throughout the weekend to finish first runner-up in the 100cc category for his first podium of the 2018 championship.

    Earlier, Ruhaan qualified sixth for the pre-final round where he finished fourth. He was running third at one point but was tapped from behind which saw him drop to sixth. However, he fought his way back to end up fourth.

    In the final, Ruhaan yet again made places and was all set to catch up the third-placed driver. At this juncture, the two drivers in front retired due to mechanical problems and Ruhaan found himself in second place as he crossed the finish line.

    “I am very happy to get back on the podium. My performance this weekend was quite good, though it could have been better. However, the podium has given me lot of confidence after having finished ninth in the previous two rounds. I look to carrying forward this momentum into the next round in July,” said Ruhaan.

    Ruhaan next heads to Adria International Raceway where the sixth round of the championship is scheduled for July 14-15.

    Ruhaan Alva

    Castelletto (Italy), June 4: India’s Ruhaan Alva delivered his second consecutive top-10 finish as he came in eighth in the 100cc category in the fourth round of the Easykart Italia championship here on Sunday.

    The 12-year old schoolboy from Bengaluru, supported by Play Factory and Birel Art India, and who had finished ninth in the previous round last month, promised much ahead of the race when he was the quickest in the last practice session that saw 15 drivers separated by just 0.5 seconds.

    Starting the pre-final race in sixth spot, just two-tenths off pole position, he qualified seventh on the grid for Sunday’s final. Ruhaan started the final hoping to make places, but lost two positions in the very first lap, but recovered to move back to seventh.

    Picking up the pace, Ruhaan managed to join the front-running bunch and was lining up to make few more places when an incident damaged his chassis that slowed him down considerably. As the race progressed, a struggling Ruhaan dropped a couple of spots to eventually finish ninth but was elevated to eighth following a penalty to a driver who was ahead of him.

    Ruhaan’s next engagement is the fifth round of the championship to be held at the Pomposa circuit on June 23-24.

    Earlier, starting ninth in the pre-final, Ruhaan, who opted for the more competitive Easykart 100 category after finishing second runner-up in the Cadet class last season, did well to jump four spots to fifth, with sights trained on a possible podium finish. However, a shunt from the back saw him slip to 11th before fighting back to finish ninth.

    Ruhaan will next take part in the fourth round of the championship scheduled for June 2-3 at the International Circuit 7 Lakes in Castelletto.

  • Akbar Ebrahim, Chandhoks lead 14 other Indians into FIA Commissions

    By David Bodapati

    Bangalore, 12 Dec 2017: It is almost a week since the FIA Annual General Assembly was held in Paris and a few days since the good news of Gautham Singhania, the drag master, and racer, adorned the highest post in his racing life. The glittering FIA grand gala Prize-Giving at the Palace of Versailles, also saw Gaurav Gill, the only Indian in the award winners list invited by the FIA, receive the honours for retaining his APRC title, on Dec. 9.

    Singhania, 52, climbed to the helm of motorsports administration being nominated by Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI) and then getting elected in the FIA General Assembly. An election to the World Motorsports Council, in the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is the highest form of governing body one can get into in this sport. He will be replacing, Vijay Mallya, the King of Good Times, is down in the dumps dubbed as the `willful defaulter’ and is facing an extradition case which looks very unlikely to stand in the London Court, with the lady lawyer grilling the prosecution and making arguments that the case is politically motivated. Whether Mallya will be indicted or not is a moot point. He lost his position as the member of the World Council and FMSCI was forced to nominate a person, and the bigwigs preferred to name Singhania, ahead of Vicky Chandhok, who was the Deputy Titular earlier and who did enormous work in bringing F1 to India, even if it stayed here only for three years. Keeping such a stalwart out may be due to the bad times, but Singhania, the MD of  Raymond Group, is no stranger to Motorsports either.

    Singhania is reported to be `very passionate about fast cars, fast boats, and fast planes’. He has driven a Formula One single-seater, said to be in France and we received many a release regarding his exploits in racing cars. He took part in the 2014 Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli – Coppa Shell, held at Silverstone in Sept 2014 as an official Indian entry endorsed by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). The Coppa Shell is a series for “amateur gentleman drivers” in the one-make racing series organised by Ferrari, and Singhania competed in a Ferrari 458. He also won on debut, the amateur category in the All Stars European Drifting Championship in Malta earlier in September 2012 and the next year he unveiled India’s first purpose-built drifting car. There are many similarities between him and Mallya…

    The Super Car Club that he co-founded is promoting drifting as an auto sport in a big way in the country, and Singhania also holds the lap record at the Buddh International Circuit in a non-open wheel car.

    But how he would become an adept administrator from being a racer, needs to be noticed. All the best to him.

    Then the current president of FMSCI, Akbar Ebrahim, who brought in a series of changes to cleanse the Federation and the clubs running various national championships, will be Singhania’s deputy titular. Akku, as he is popularly known in the circuit, is a no-nonsense man. He calls a spade a spade. But he too is facing a gigantic challenge in dealing with the veterans in the sport, the grapevine alleges. That is enough material for a separate story.

    Akku will also be a member of the Electric and New Energy Championships Commission. Apart from the top two, we have stalwarts Chandhoks, who can just walk into any commission. But Vicky Chandhok continues to be in the Truck Racing Commission while Karun Chandhok, one of the only two Formula One drivers from India, who thrills millions of motorsports fans with his amazing knowledge of F1 and motorsports during his commentary stints on TV, will continue to be on the Drivers’ Commission. The other two important Commissions saw J Anand and Farhan Vohra get elected. Anand, a former speed master and current chief of JA Motorsport which builds the single seater cars in India will be in the Single Seater Commission. I always believed that J Anand and Arjun Balu, both based in Coimbatore, are two of the greatest drivers India ever produced who also ended up as greatest underachievers, never realising the potential their raw speed and immense talent deserved. Unsung heroes, who I still respect for their deeds behind the wheel! Anand went on to become a great entrepreneur and is coming up with a big venture for Tatas. Arjun Balu too is nominated by the Federation but unfortunately, he could not make it this time and he has to wait. The way he won the Asia Zone Cup in China in 2002 defeating his much-acclaimed teammate Naren Kumar, is still fresh in my mind. In MRF team, he was always a second fiddle, for reasons unknown, even if one is made to believe that there were no team orders.

    Vohra was in control during the three years, India hosted the Formula One world championship at Buddh International Circuit. As the Indian Race Director and Assistant CoC and he will be on the Circuits Commission.

    Then we have the multi-faceted, 7-time National champion and amazing rallyist, racer, tuner, N Leelakrishnan. He will be the member of the Touring Car Commission. Farooq Ahmed, the brain behind the Motorsports Club of Chikmagalur and the one who brought the Asia Pacific Rally Championship to India will adorn the FIA Rally Commission and rightly so. What with the enormous success of the APRC in the Coffee Estates of Coffee Day Global for the last two years, where the King of Indian Motorsports Gaurav Gill ruled the roost winning not only the Chikmagalur leg but also the APRC titles. Gill is also the lone winner at the Gala FIA prize-giving, a day after 17 Indians walked into the FIA panels.

    Farooq was a former National Champion himself and was the co-driver for Leelakrishnan among other drivers. Under his stewardship, the Coffee Day Rally, and the club itself raised standards to a higher notch, not only to become a permanent fixture in the INRC, the Indian National Rally Championship but also to set the game to a professional level that only a few can achieve.

    When MSCC shines, can KMSC, the Karnataka governing body, be far behind. Balakrishna Jayasimha, the biker turned rallyist, is the current secretary of Karnataka Motorsports Club for the last seven years. With Bharat, leaving all of us, after his untimely death, BK, as he is fondly known in the circles, and Shivu Shivappa, the President are pulling on the reigns. But it is BK, who makes his debut in the FIA commissions. He will be part of the Off-road stuff. The RallyCross and AutoCross. He has a story to tell about the sport taking off in India in one division. It has made a quick start with a GP published in the other, but that I will keep for another story.

    And then we have Zayn Khan, the former FMSCI president. The Hyderabadi will be replacing Prabha Shankar of Chennai in the Volunteers and Officials Commission. Nawaz Sandhu, nee Batheena will again sit in the `Women In Sport’ Commision. As CoC, she was impeccable driving the deserts in her vehicle to run the Jaipur rally when PSP and IMG ran it. A former rallyist and married to `madman driver’ Sandhu, who with his mad speed, used to scare the daylights out of his navigator, another former champion, and our very own Bengalurean, Jaidas Menon. I still remember the joke about the day when a train passed through the unmanned gates of those many tricky crossings K-1000 had. Jai stopped making the calls and started shouting…..STOP, STOP, STOP. But the cool-as-as-a-cucumber Sandhu was not mad enough to heed the caution. He crossed the track in a jiffy, seconds before `the Train’ crossed the same spot. And then it was his turn to shout… “RELAX, RELAX, RELAX. It’s all over”. The narration is an exaggeration, I agree, but the incident was a real-life experience. Ask Jaidas or even the `silent’ Sandhu. Now they will laugh about it.

    Coming back to Navaz, she will continue to be the Indian representative of the `Women in Sport’ Commission. We also have Balamurugan in the Drag Commission for another term and another Coimbatore-based official Sajeev Mathew entering the Karting Commission this year. Automobile journalist and expert voice, Hormazd Sorabjee continues in the Land Speed Records Commission. That will leave us with Satish Kumar in Homologation Commission, Manjeev Balla, famous for the Raid de Himalaya gets one more term in the Hill Climb Commission, and Shyam Kumar enters Safety Commission, which is turning out to be one of the most important Commissions.

    1. Akbar Ebrahim, Electric and New Energy Championships Commission;
    2. Vicky Chandhok, Truck Racing Commission;
    3. Karun Chandhok, Drivers’ Commission;
    4. J Anand (Single Seater Commission;
    5. Farhan Vohra, Circuits;
    6. Zayn Khan, Volunteers, and Officials;
    7. Manjeev Balla, Hill Climb Commission;
    8. Sajeev Mathew, Karting Commission;
    9. J Balamurugan, Drag Racing Commission;
    10. N. Leelakrishnan, Touring Cars Commission;
    11. Jayesh Desai, Cross Country Commission;
    12. Balakrishna Jayasimha, Off-Road commission for Auto-cross and Rally cross;
    13. Shyam Kumar, Safety Commission;
    14. Navaz Batheena Sandhu, Women in Motorsports;
