Yash Aradhya honoured with Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award

Yash Aradhya receiving the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award from Honorable President of India Shri. Ram Nath Kovind on 22 Jan 2020. A Rashtrapati Bhavan photo New Delhi, 22 Jan 2020: Bengaluru’s Yash Aradhya became the first Indian motorsports star to win the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award here on Wednesday. Yash received the award in a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan from Honorable President of India Shri. Ram Nath Kovind.
The 17-year-old, who has been scorching race tracks ever since he turned 9, has 13 Championship wins, including over 65 podium finishes and 12 awards, to his credit.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puruskar is India’s highest civilian honor bestowed upon exceptional students from various fields under the age of 18. Yash, along with the 49 other talented kids who have been hand-picked by an elite panel set up by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, will also meet the Prime Minister before they take part in the Republic Day Parade on January 26.
“I thank the Government of India for considering me worthy of this award and humbly accept it. It is a great honour to receive the award from the Honorable President of India and to meet the Honorable Prime Minister of India. I have been working really hard and after attaining considerable success at both international and national circuit, it really is very gratifying to be bestowed with this recognition,” Yash said shortly after receiving the award.
“While I have had my share of success on the grid in the past few years this award will remain always special as this is not an achievement for me but for the whole fraternity. This award will inspire other young enthusiasts and they will push themselves more as they now would know that their achievement will be recognised,” he added.
Coming from a humble background and no family history in motorsports, it has been a long and tough ride for Yash. He started his career in the JK Tyre National Go-karting Championship eight years back, racing for Akbar Ebrahim’s Meco Motorsports, and has steadily moved up, eventually making it to Formula Racing.
He has taken part in international championships too, including the CIK FIA Academy Trophy in 2015 in Spain, Belgium and France. He was also nominated by FMSCI to represent India in the Rotax World Finals in 2017 to race in Portugal. In 2019, took part in the FIA Motorsport Games held at Rome.
Yash debuted in the Formula-4 South East Asia Championship in the 2019 season and claimed first 2 podium finishes to underline his talent.
“Indian motorsports is enjoying a great high. First, Gaurav Gill became the first from our field to receive the Arjuna Award; and now, Yash is being felicitated with Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award. This is yet another great achievement for Indian motorsports and it is indeed a very proud moment for us. It feels really good to see that our hard work for over the years now is finally reaping rich dividends. Yash is a very talented driver and getting this award will definitely motivate him to reach greater heights in near future,” Mr. Sanjay Sharma, Head of Motorsports – JK Tyre, said.
“We are very thrilled with Yash’s achievement. It has taken us lot of time to get the recognition that we deserved. But now with Gaurav and Yash breaking the glass ceiling, we are hopeful that many laurels will be won by our stars and people will start taking our sport more seriously as well as garner more mainstream attention,” Mr. J Prithiviraj, President of the FMSCI said.
“Never judge a book by it’s cover Is an old saying. This certainly applies to young Yash Aradhaya. If one had to observe his mannerisms when he first stepped into a kids go kart, one may not have thought that he would raise up to the occasion to put himself In a position to be nominated for this prestigious award. But If one had a careful look at his eyes and the deep rooted passion conveyed through them, one would have certainly expected him to go a long way in his motor sporting career. Coupled with the support from his family and the never say die attitude of his doting father, Yash has had the opportunity to move up the tough ladder step by step and achieve remarkable results at every step. This Is just the beginning and with strong determination from him and everyone else around him, Yash could be well on his way to making a name for himself in the International arena of professional racing,” Akbar Ebrahim of Meco Motorsports and Yash’ mentor said.

Prithvi Raj files appeal against `unjust ban’; CASC rejects Rs.5-lakh penalty
Coimbatore, 21 Nov 2019: FMSCI President J Prithvi Raj, issued a statement on 21 November 2019, following the unfair ban imposed on him as Clerk of the Course (CoC). He informed that an appeal was filed by him the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club (CASC) to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI) appellate body.
On Nov 5, a Committee formed to inquire into the incident that happened in Jodhpur where three people died, had banned Prithvi Raj as CoC for three years and said that he should serve only as DCoC after serving the 3-year period. It also said that he would continue to be the President of FMSCI.
The CASC was also penalised Rs 5 lakh and was barred from organising any events outside Coimbatore. CASC said that it is unreasonable to punish them for no fault of theirs and have filed an appeal.
Prithvi Raj, who is also the president of the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club and a veteran of several National and important events said: “I am sharing this statement in my individual capacity, as the CoC of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) for the Jodhpur Round.
“As a responsible and senior official of the FMSCI, with over 28 years in the profession in various capacities, including as CoC of innumerable events, I have always carried out my duties with diligence and a sense of responsibility. I have always considered safety and procedure as top priority, never compromising on either of them ever in my life.
“As CoC of the Jodhpur Rally too, I had ensured that every safety measure was in place and FMSCI Observer too went on the route and approved the stage setup before giving it the green signal.
“So, I disagree with the three-year penalty imposed on me. It is harsh and unfair too, especially as the Council members did not give me any opportunity to present my version nor a copy of the report before passing their verdict. This is against the principles of natural justice.
“Taking into account everything that has happened before, during and after the Rally, I have decided to appeal against the penalty imposed on me. If nothing, I should be given an opportunity to put forward my case,” concluded Prithviraj.
Appeal by CASC is given below:
To,
The Members of the Council,
The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, Chennai.
Sirs,
We are in receipt of the FMSCI Enquiry Panel report as modified and approved by the Council of FMSCI on 5th November 2019.
We were shocked and surprised to by the recommendations of the Enquiry Panel and the decision of the Council to impose a monetary penalty of Rs.5,00,000/- on CASC and to ban CASC from organizing National Championship Events outside of Coimbatore till 31stDecember 2022. We hereby place our objections to the same.
Firstly, CASC was never given any notice by the Enquiry Panel or by FMSCI to attend the enquiry conducted by the Enquiry Panel or to send anyone to represent CASC in the enquiry, which notice should have been sent well before the date of enquiry; second, we were never called upon by any show cause notice to express our objections or differences in respect of the recommendations of the Enquiry Panel post enquiry and post report; we have been, as an entity and as member of FMSCI, entirely unaware of the above developments and recommendations.
We further find that the report of the Enquiry Panel reads as if Mr. J. Prithiviraj participated in the enquiry as our representative. That is not correct. We never authorized Mr. J. Prithiviraj or anyone else for that matter to represent us in the enquiry since we had not been called upon to do so. The monetary penalty and the ban have been imposed on us is entirely in violation of principles of natural justice and fair play. As such, the same are not legal and binding.
In light of the above, we request you to withdraw the penalty and ban imposed on us forthwith. In the event of the council failing to withdraw the decision, we reserve our right to seek appropriate remedies.
Awaiting your reply at the earliest.
Truly,
Signed/
(J.Balu)
Hony. Jt. Secretary.

Girijashankar Joshy, a gentleman rally driver retires
Bengaluru, 2 Oct 2019: It is exactly two years back, a stalwart of Indian rallying announced his retirement through the pages of Facebook. A disciplined, dedicated sportsperson with high-calibre of commitment, sincerity and hardwork, Girijashankar Joshy.
This writer had the pleasure of watching Joshy for over 15 years, and as he says it was a wonderful journey. Unfortunately, within a few months after his debut, I left Indian Express and had no time to write about the gentleman of Rally, more later but here is the Retirement Announcement!
By Girijashankar Joshy
It was a wonderful journey of 16 years in Motorsport. I have a life-time of memories and experiences as a rally driver. I want to thank many people who helped me in fulfilling my dreams and achieving success.
Almighty first! I thank my beloved goddess Sri Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari for her blessings and permitting me to do what I loved the most when I sought her permission. In my journey of rallying, I want to thank my family starting with my dear appa Bheemeshwar Joshy G, amma Rajalaxmi Joshy, my soulmate Savithri Joshy, my three lovely kids and all my family members who stood by me despite all the ups and downs of my rallying career.

Joshy on a flight in one of the INRC rounds! It just makes no sense, if I don’t thank my navigators. So a big shout out to all my co-drivers who sat with me with “NO” fear and trusted and believed in my driving ability that I will get them home safely.
My beloved friend Srikanth Gowda with whom I started in 2005 and went on to win two Cchampionships, and later with Prajval Pai, with whom I won the overall first runner-up in 2008 INRC Championship. In 2010, Chandramouli Madiraju sat with me and we came very close in winning Group N championship but had to settle down to Second in Championship.
It’s time to thank my tuners without whom I would not have driven those strong and reliable Rally cars. Firstly, Saminathan Sami of Kari Sports Car Works, who was like my elder brother as he always guided me and gave a wonderful car to compete in.
Leelakrishnan Narayanaswamy with his mechanical and moral support, I have achieved a lot. Thyagarajan and Roshan from Chettinad Sporting for supporting me to make a comeback in 2017 for a short time.
Yousaf Ahmed from SNAP racing, who provided me with a fantastic service in the rally in the 2019 season.
I am very great full to team #Snapracing and #VolkswagenmotorsportIndia who supported me to make a full-time comeback driving in the INRC Class in a Polo 1.2 TSI rally spec. Special mention to Sirish Vissa, Karan AM, Sumit Panjabi and Nitin Jacob, they made my day.
Would like to thank my sponsors without whom I may not have survived financially. Starting with IndianOil, MRF Tyre, JK Tyre, Team Winspeed, Team Tata Motors, Ovion, Torq3 Sports and Adventure, and Snap Racing.
Lastly but not least, I like to thank all my friends, well-wishers, fans and followers for coming and supporting me, and cheering me all the time when I was rallying.
My beloved goddesses Sri Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwar has different plans for my future.
Hence, I announce my retirement from Motorsports as a rally driver.
But my love and passion for Motorsport will keep me around in different roles.
Signing of as a rally driver.
Girijashankar Joshy

3 dead in Jodhpur accident during INRC first stage
Jodhpur, 21 Sept 2019: A pall of gloom descended on the rally camp at the Maxperience Rally 2019 here as the tragic incident which took three lives, left the Rally Fraternity in a state of shock and disbelief. After the accident that happened in the first few minutes of the start here, the rally was stopped, and later the organisers cancelled the Jodhpur Rally.
Gaurav Gill’s car is said to be involved in the accident while negotiating a blind corner and the `bike appeared from nowhere,’’ a spectator said.
Though a section of the media has put out the names of the deceased, the police are yet to identify and confirm them. Police are yet to file the FIR and find attorneys for traffic accident injuries cases to help the injured victims. The organisers and promoters are fully cooperating with the policy inquiry and are in touch with the top police authorities of the district. You can also get help from Matthew Norris – helping oil field accident victims, in any of the accident or injury cases.
“The rally had to be brought to an abrupt end after one of the cars hit a motorcycle carrying three people. The motorcycle had forcibly entered into the barricaded area, breaking past the security barrier while the stage was still green. The driver was moving at high speed and could not even see the motorbike as it emerged at a sharp turn,” Arvind Balan, the local organiser of the rally said. The attorneys for traffic accident injuries cases can help with the legalities of injury cases.
It is learnt that the three deceased were not wearing helmets and were on the track and argued with the stage marshals who stopped them from entering the stage which is green and ready for the first car. “Everything happened within less than a minute. It was a literally a blind spot. He (Gaurav) tried to stop the car, however, as there was a sharp turn the situation became unavoidable and he was blinded. Despite being warned, the biker forcefully entered the track,” the organizers said.
The driver of the motorcycle and the two pillion riders, said to be his wife and son, reportedly died on the spot. None of them were wearing helmets.
“We feel very sad for the deceased people and express our condolences to their family members. We had all the safety measures at place and also had the necessary permission from the authorities,” Vamsi Merla, the promoter, added.“It was an unfortunate incident that took place despite all the safety measures being in place,” J Prithiviraj, president of FMSCI, who is also the COC of the event, said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The entire motorsports fraternity stands with them in this hour of grief,” he added. -

Achintya 3rd in solo rounds; Khyati, Sahil join him as India gets 4th in Team Championship: AAGC

Indians (left), who got the 4th place in the Team Championship share the podium with other winners. An AAGC photo Bengaluru, 3 Sept 2019: The Indian team comprising of Achintya Mehrotra, Sahil Khanna, and Khyati Mody won the fourth place in the Team Championship at the second round of the Asia Auto Gymkhana Championship at South Korea on August 31 and September 1. Mehrotra also won a bronze medal in the solo rounds.
Khyati Mody has represented the country in motorsports abroad and returned successfully from this outing in South Korea. She was selected to the Indian team as a female driver, along with Delhi’s Achintya Mehrotra and Sahil Khanna.
In Asian Gymkhana, the top four nations in the Team championship will be awarded prizes on the podium. India finished fourth in the first round too.

Indians Khyati Mody (left) Achintya Mehrotra and Sahil Khanna take a selfie with other teams at AAGC in South Korea. FB @Achintya Earlier, Khyati was selected to be a part of Team India squad during the trial rounds in Banglore in June along with others. Shivani Pruthvi participated in the first round and Khyati replaced her for this round due to her non-availability.
“Just a week before South Korea round I got a call from the Federation that one of the team members is not available and I was selected for this round. I was thrilled and anxious since there was barely any time to get any training,” said Khyati.
Her other two teammates in the Indian squad, Achintya Mehrotra and Sahil Khanna, have registered themselves to do a basic BMW course in South Korea prior to the round and they suggested her too. But unfortunately, the slots were full. However, before booking her flight ticket she checked the availability and was lucky that one slot opened up. She booked it immediately but needed an International driving license to attend this course. Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) assisted her and arranged the permit.
In Mumbai, it is difficult to find tracks to practice handbrake turns but Ajmera Indi Karting in Wadala was happy to lend her the karting track for her practice. Rayo Racing head Rayomand Banerjee and AAGC committee personal Harshit Merchant helped her in guiding her towards refining her skill in the few hour’s practice that could be managed in the last 2-3 days prior to her flight.
“I procured the driving suit in the last minute and flew down to South Korea and along with my teammates held the Tricolour during the opening ceremony. It was a feeling that is beyond words to express. At that moment I just felt that we are carrying the dreams of all Indian motorsports lovers. Along with Achintya and Sahil, we gave our best and managed to get the 4th place despite much tough opposition from better-placed countries,” added Khyati.
“I missed the individual podium by 0.07 second which was heart-breaking but I am happy to have won fourth place in the team trophy along with my teammates. They have been my biggest strength and support system in South Korea and assisted me when I needed them the most. I did not even have a team India T-shirt. Sahil Khanna was kind enough to let me borrow his spare T-shirt. It’s been an emotional roller-coaster and I am glad I was part of the Indian team,” she concluded.

Arjuna Award for Gaurav Gill – a recognition long time coming, but fully deserving! #GillRacing
Former Sports Editor and respected senior journalist, Anand Philar, who specialises in motorsports, has tracked Arjuna Award winner Gaurav Singh Gill from his nascent days, and chronicled and photographed his exploits throughout his career, both at home and abroad.
In a special article to IndiaInF1, he shares his thoughts on Gaurav Gill.

By Anand Philar
Bengaluru, 30 August 2019: Back in 2005, a new sensation called Gaurav Gill burst on to the National Rally scene as a “replacement driver” for Vikram Mathias who was injured in a major crash the previous round in Delhi. Vikram’s navigator, Sujith Kumar, was asked to partner the tearaway Gill at a time when few were willing to sit in the co-driver’s seat. Gill finished Overall second to JK Tyre’s lead driver, VR Naren Kumar, after dominating most of the event by clocking seriously fast Stage times. Gaurav Singh Gill has arrived.
The following year, in Pune, it was the turn of veteran Farooq Ahmed, to partner Gill who again finished behind Naren Kumar, who went on to win the championship. Both Sujith and Farooq sang praises of not just Gill’s extreme pace, but his “phenomenal memory”.
Sujith recalled: “I have never sat with any driver with such memory. I realised then that he was a special talent and a superstar in the making.” Farooq said much the same. “Just phenomenal talent Anand. He will go places. I have never co-driven for a guy with such raw pace and memory. I mean, he remembered every corner and dip. I wondered whether he needed a navigator at all!”

File photo of Gaurav Gill negotiating a corner in the Coffee Day Rally 2017. Photos by Anand Philar For sure, Gill had cast a magical and mesmeric spell on the Indian motorsport fraternity which continues to this day. MRF Tyres, taking note of his immense talent, was quick to sign up Gill and thus began the Delhi lad’s long journey to international stardom. APRC titles in 2013, 2016 and 2017, cemented Gill’s status as a World-class driver. At home, his dominance was even more absolute as National titles came his way.
From the raw pace of the youth to mature driving of the experienced, Gill has come a long way. “Over the years and with experience, I learned to pace myself in a rally. It meant, knowing when to push and when to nurse your position without taking undue risks. It has made me a better driver and in rallying, much like a good wine that tastes better with age,” he had told me in a rare moment of introspection as we drove to Chikmagaluru for the Coffee Day India Rally a couple of years ago.

Gaurav Gill signals six, after his sixth win in a row. He won the APRC for the third time, winning all the rounds. Photo by Anand Philar Through his decade-long campaign in the APRC with MRF team, Gill was pitted against more experienced team-mates, not necessarily in terms of age, but seat time and the number of competitions.
“These guys do about 20 to 25 rallies in a year as against five or six in my case, and another few in INRC. A couple of my team-mates have been factory drivers, constantly testing the cars that were being prepared for APRC. They literally lived in them! So, straight away, I am at a disadvantage going into an APRC round. Yet, I am able to match and beat them on the Stages. This is what people back home should know, understand and appreciate,” has been Gill’s constant refrain each time we met at an APRC event abroad.
For me, there is more to Gill than the titles (including one track racing championship). Statistics do no justice to his talent that is so apparent even to a novice watcher. For Indian motorsport, he is once-in-a-lifetime beacon leading the way and setting benchmarks.
The Arjuna Award came his way exactly 20 years after he made his rally debut on a bike before switching to cars. Through those two decades of living on the edge, as it were, Gill has maintained his focus and motivation, while blossoming into a man who is officially certified fit enough to pilot a monstrous Formula 1 speedboat!

Gaurav Gill takes a huge jump during the APRC Malaysian round in 2017. Photo by Anand Philar For Gill, speed is the elixir of life, beautifully complemented by his unshakable belief and confidence in his ability to drive quick but safe, take calculated risks that would deter a lesser mortal, the special bonding with the car that becomes an extension of self, quickly learning its limits to push it to the very edge and, sometimes, beyond – all traits of a man who belongs to the elite class of motorsport drivers.
Gill is a natural. “Give him a bullock cart, and he will still be the quickest!” This is not said in jest, but with awe and admiration. I have had the privilege of sitting with him in the Skoda ahead of Rally of Hokkaido. I barely noticed the stunning acceleration, the cornering, and braking. The silken touch and precision driving had me mesmerised, just like it has always been when I focussed my camera on his car power-sliding through the corner or attacking a crest!

Family Time: Gaurav Gill with family at the Coffee Day round in 2017. Photo by Anand Philar Hailing from a family of rally drivers, his uncle Dicky Gill (Team MRF) being the best known among them, Gaurav took to driving like a duck to water. “I learned to drive very early in life, taking our family car out without informing anyone. Then came the Play Station games and the bikes, which are still my first love, before I moved to cars. So, I grew up in such an environment and here I am, driving Rally cars!”.
Hopefully, the Arjuna Award would not only motivate Gaurav further, but also spawn a generation of young guns who will not just emulate him, but go a step further. He has waited long for this overdue National recognition, dealing with frustrations and triumphs with supreme equanimity, never once taking his eyes off the goals he had set. Now, looking to his 38th birthday on December 2, Gill has his sights set on the big stage, the WRC. “My ultimate wish is to compete with the best in the World and prove to myself first that I belong to.” His words, spoken over a year ago. It’s time we all got behind this maverick of a driver.
Pursue your dreams champ and conquer new horizons.

CS Santosh launches Recky, an app to connect world’s motorcyclists

Santosh launches Recky app on Thursday. Bengaluru, 22 August 2019: India’s No.1 off-road motorcyclist CS Santosh launched on Thursday, Recky, a mobile application pegged to be the world’s most user-friendly activity recording App that connects world’s motorcyclists.
Ideated and tested by CS Santosh, first Indian to complete the deadly Dakar Rally, Recky is a feature-rich App focused on simplifying the experience and making it affordable and accessible for developing countries.
Recky allows you to take pictures in-app along your ride and automatically drops markers for where you’ve taken these pictures. These pictures show up once your ride is complete. The App provides the user vital information along with dark, light, topography and satellite map-views for free. “The whole idea was to provide the fast-growing biker community a platform to connect and explore various adventure biking routes in the world,” stated CS Santosh.
Key features like record your ride, experience the ride, explore rides, get directions and user profile makes Recky fun and engaging. Apart from getting pin-point directions, the App displays elevation, top speed and distance.
Privacy being paramount in today’s era, the creators of the App will ensure the data is not shared and the app does not track the rider until the user opts to record the activity.
Once the ride is complete, the user can save it as ‘Private’ or opt ‘Followers’ (for your followers to see) or choose ‘Everyone’ option (for the general public which appears on explore rides). Others using Recky can then play the ride again to see directions, pictures and stats. “Our Ride Explorer, displays all public rides and rides from your followers in one map-view, at all times. No need to click and find or search, it’s all map-based zooming and panning. Pan across to any country and find rides there instantly as riders populate them,” explained CS Santosh.
While the directions to a ride are currently a list, it will soon be turn-by-turn navigation. “We’ll soon provide the users the option to create a ride-summary like no other in the world – this will be the most entertaining element for the user and for the user’s social media followers,” he added.
