    INRC: Winners’ Hall of Fame

A list of all the winners of all the rounds starting for 1988 is compiled and given below. (Winners of a few years in the initial years are yet to be collected.)

    By David Bodapati

Bengaluru: Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) has a special charm and attraction in India. It is the Crown Jewel of Indian motorsports and holds a respectable status among all the Nationals and vies for supremacy with National Racing Championship which, perhaps, has overtaken in popularity in the last few years due to the meticulous handling and organisational skills of the Madras Motor Sports Club. The overwhelming crowd patronage, the sheer passion and love shown by the drivers, officials, organisers and fans takes one into a different realm when one pours through the 32 editions held so far.

The year 1996 is a special year in my life. It is the first year, I saw a rally live and was enamoured by it. I was working with Indian Express then and was transferred to Bangalore Sports Desk in 1996. Since then I have followed all the rallies and have covered at least one rally a year.

In 1995, I had followed the reports from the rallies, and it was the largest calendar with 9 rounds and 1996 too had a menu of nine rounds, the best two years with the highest number of rounds in the 32 years of INRC history (as of 23Dec200). That year, the first three rounds were held in Nashik, Coimbatore and Madras and there were three different winners which opened up the race for the championship. We were eagerly waiting for the 22nd K1000. Come August and it is rally time here. And there was a new winner once again. Here, I met some of the legends with whom, over the years I developed great friendships. CK Chinnappa, George Francis, Shekar Bojanna, and the like. They used to reel out stories and I was mesmerised. And not to forget the two, Sujith Kumar and Madhu, who introduced me to live F1 screenings at Guzzlers Inn on Church Street, where the atmosphere used to be electric with two camps cheering their F1 heroes while guzzling draught beer. The McLaren fans on one side and the Tifosi on the other.

Coming back to INRC, I have tried to put together all the winners of all the rounds since INRC began in the present format as a National Championship in 1988. I have started with overall winners and co-drivers. Soon I hope to dig in and come up with winners of different classes. There are a lot of gaps. I request all the respected senior drivers and veteran fans to chip in and help me pool in the missing information. I will be very thankful for any additions and corrections. You can click the link for a particular round, if the link is available, and it will take you to the rally report of that year’s round.

Here we go! Have a nostalgic trip!!

  • Ghosh, Naik win Rally of Arunachal Pradesh as Gill pulls out with mechanical problems

Ghosh, Naik win Rally of Arunachal Pradesh as Gill pulls out with mechanical problems

Winners of INRC Round 3 (Rally of Arunachal) overall – Amittrajit Ghosh (Left) and his co-driver Ashwin Naik (in Itanagar’s Police Parade ground (Chimpu) today.

Itanagar, 4 November 2018: On a day of upsets, Team Mahindra Adventure’s Amittrajit Ghosh (co-driver Ashwin Naik) showed great tactical acumen to win the Rally of Arunachal, Round 3 of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018, here on Sunday. Ghosh, who exhibited amazing fightback on Day 1 to rise from ninth to third, enjoyed a much-needed slice of luck as overnight leader Gaurav Gill (Musa Sherif) pulled out of the competition as his car broke down in the sixth stage.

Ghosh tackled the day’s three stages cautiously, finishing second in SS5, third in SS6 and again second in SS7 for a cumulative top timing of 00:57:33.6. It was 5.9 seconds faster than INRC 2’s Phalguna Urs and Srikanth Gowda giving them the victory. The Snap Racing pair, who were hot on Gill’s tail all of Saturday, didn’t have a fruitful second day, managing only two fourth-place and one fifth-place finish in the stages.

Phalguna’s drive was still good enough to earn his team the INRC 2 win. Former champion Karna Kadur (PVS Murthy) made a valiant charge, taking the second place in SS6 and even winning SS7, but that could only fetch him the runner’s up trophy. Kadur’s Arka Motorsports team-mate Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Y Bhatt) dropped one position to settle for the third place.

The INRC 3 too saw a change in the overnight pecking order, with leaders Suhem Kabeer (Jeevarathinam) of Team Champions slipping out of reckoning in the day’s first stage itself after a crash. It allowed his team-mate and defending champion Dean Mascarenhas (Shruptha Padival) to claim the title. Aroor Vikram Rao (Somayya AG) and local outfit Phurpa Tsering (Chow Tiktha) took the other two places on the podium.

“We started the Rally of Arunachal on an ominous note, taking the ninth place due to a technical issue. But I and Ashwin kept pushing until we managed to bounce back to the pole,” a victorious Amittrajit said.

“Today too, we suffered as we had changed the tyres for wet conditions but the track dried up by the time we hit it. But we drove steadily to win the title, which became easier after Gaurav pulled out with a mechanical failure. We are now looking forward to the next two rounds, even though we know that Gaurav will be back in his elements and will put up a tough fight,” he added.

    The results:

INRC Overall: 1. Amittrajit Ghosh / Ashwin Naik (Team Mahindra Adventure; 00:57:33.6); 2. Phalguna Urs / Srikanth Gowda (Snap Racing; 00:57:39.5); 3. Dean Mascarenhas / Shruptha Padival (Team Champions; 00:57:57.7).

Itanagar, 3 November 2018: Three-time APRC champion Gaurav Gill recovered from a tyre puncture and only his second stage defeat this season to surge into the lead on Day 1 of the Rally of Arunachal which doubles up as the Round 3 of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018, here on Saturday.

Team Mahindra Adventure’s Gill, with Musa Sherif by his side, won the other three stages in his usual aggressive style to set himself up for another victory in this elite championship. He raced at speeds over 180 Kmph, recording a scorching average speed of 115.55 km/h in the opening stage.

He was at his slowest in the second stage, managing an average of 99.92 km/h, which was still good enough to give him the second position in that stretch.

Gill’s Mahindra Adventure team-mate Amittrajit Ghosh (co-driver Ashwin Naik) won the Stage 2 in style. He had, however, suffered a setback in Stage 1, struggling with a power issue to finish ninth. However, he made up in the remaining rounds to climb to the third position by the end of an exciting day although his car is still not firing on all cylinders.

Snap Racing’s Phalguna Urs (Srikanth Gowda) grabbed the second position with one second and two third place finishes in the Stages. They, however, slipped to fifth place in the fourth and final stage of the day, to be trailing Gill and Sherif by one minute, 31.8 seconds.

Their fine show was good enough to give them the lead in the INRC 2 category, ahead of top contenders Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Y Bhatt) and Karna Kadur (PVS Murthy).

In the INRC 3 category, Suhem Kabeer (Jeevarathinam) made the most of championship leader Aroor Vikram Rao’s (Somayya AG) bad luck in Stage 4 to streak ahead into the lead. Suhem, however, was in his elements, winning two of the stages in his category.

Five-time INRC champion Gill was pleased with his driving, despite the puncture. “The first stage went off very well. We, however, hit a stone in Stage 2 and picked up a puncture,” he pointed out. “We still managed to finish in decent time, which helped us stay in the lead.”

Gill explained that the final day might be tricky as the track was likely to be muddy following rains while they only had tyres suited for tarmac. “It won’t be easy but we will give it our best shot,” he declared.

Ghosh also was not too unhappy with the way the day panned out. “Our car had power issues during Stage 1 and we fell back to the ninth place. By the end of the day, we have climbed to third. Our goal now is to focus on the second position. First is not within reach as we are quite far behind in terms of speed,” he said.

    The results:

INRC Overall: 1. Gaurav Gill / Musa Sherif (Team Mahindra Adventure; 00:31:22.9); 2. Phalguna Urs / Srikanth (Snap Racing; 00:32:54.7); 3. Amittrajit Ghosh / Ashwin Naik (Team Mahindra Adventure; 00:33:05.1).

INRC 1: Gill / Sherif; 2. Ghosh / Naik; 3. Lokesh Gowda / Venu Ramesh Kumar (Team Champions; 00:37:30.4).

INRC 2: 1. Phalguna Urs / Srikanth Gowda (Snap Racing; 00:32:54.7); 2. Rahul Kanthraj / Vivek Y Bhatt (Arka Motorsports; 00:33:20.9); 3. Karna Kadur / PVS Murthy (Arka Motorsports; 00:33:52.7).

INRC 3: 1. Suhem Kabeer / Jeevarathinam (Team Champions; 00:33:17.8); 2. Dean Mascarenhas / Shruptha Padival (Team Champions; 00:33:23.2).

FMSCI 2WD CUP: 1. Adith KC / Arjun SSB (00:34:18.6).

Gaurav Gill set to fire in Rally of Arunachal, Round 3 of MRF FMSCI INRC 2018

(L-R) Aroor Vikram Rao, Amittrajit Ghosh, Gaurav Gill, Karna Kadur & Rahul Kanthraj during media interaction in Itanagar for Round 3 of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018

Itanagar, 2 November 2018: India’s top rallyist Gaurav Gill will be hoping to inch closer to his sixth national title as the Rally of Arunachal, Round 3 of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018, unfolds here over the weekend.

Gill, the Team Mahindra Adventure spearhead, who won the grueling Dakshin Dare Rally last month, has been in imperious form through the season, winning the first two rounds with consummate ease.

Along with his trusted co-driver Musa Sherif, Gill is expected to thrill the local crowds with his speed and daredevilry behind the wheel. He will have to keep his eye on his team-mate Amittrajit Ghosh (co-driver Ashwin Naik), though, who will be aiming to upstage him.

Ghosh is currently in the second position and has been driving a lot more assuredly, even though he had to drop out of contention in the Dakshin Dare Rally owing to vehicle malfunction.

Team Mahindra Adventure will be wary of Arka Motorsports’ Karna Kadur, who is likely to enjoy a slight edge over the tarmac stretches. Kadur has a new co-driver by his side, PVS Murthy, and is leading the charts in the INRC 2 category. He is third behind Gill and Ghosh in the overall championship standings.

His team-mate Rahul Kanthraj (co-driver Vivek Y Bhatt) is also a strong contender, currently holding the second position in the INRC 2 category.

Aroor Vikram Rao (co-driver Somayya AG) is leading the INRC 3 category and he will be keen to consolidate his position in the picturesque locals of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Round 3 of MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018 being officially flagged off by Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri Pema Khandu (with flag) in Itanagar on November 2

  • Gill-Musa bag Rally of Coimbatore to begin the season with a win

Coimbatore, 31 July 2017: Team Mahindra Adventure’s Gaurav Gill and Musa Sherif began with a bang, winning the MRF Rally of Coimbatore, the first round of the MRF-FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) at the windmill farms of Kethanur, near here, on Sunday. Gill clocked 1hour 36.0 seconds to finish the 70-km Special Stage distance of five stages.

The King of Indian motorsports, along with co-driver Musa Sherif, took a comfortable lead from the very first special Stage and slowly improved it to chalk out a convincing win. The double Asia Pacific Rally Champion made amends to his run at the Southern Indian city last year which was troubled by mechanical problems, but today he made up for the loss with a good win to take a lead in the Championship race.

Reigning champions Karna Kadur and co-driver Nikhil V Pai followed Gill and Musa in second place with a difference of 1min 45sec and last year’s winner Amittrajit Ghosh and navigator Ashwin Naik could only finish third. The Kolkota driver looked rusted and the seven-month gap from driving showed on his performance. “The long gap took its toll and it is difficult coming back from such a break,” he said. On the contrary, his Mahindra Adventure teammate Gill was happy with the show. `I have not got into the SUV for almost a year but I am happy with the result,” he quipped.

Dean Mascarenhas and co-driver Shruptha Padival won the INRC 3 category with Dr Bikku Babu and Milen George in second and KM Bopaiah, along with co-driver Karumbaiah G finishing third.

Vikram Rao Aroor and Somayya AG had a bad crash while Arjun Rao Aroor along with Satish Rajagopal had a DNF making it five teams who failed to finish.

“Perhaps for the firs time, the official rally release did not have the timings,” said a veteran motorsports journalist.

Lohit, Murthy win Coffee Day Rally; Arjun Balu retires

    By David Bodapati

Chikmagalur, 20 Nov 2011: Mysore star Lohit Urs and co-driver PV Srinivasa Murthy of Team MRF tamed the machine and conquered the track to come out triumphant defeating speed demon Gaurav Gill (co-driver Musa Sherif) to win the Coffee Day Rally, the 5th round of the Speed Indian National Rally Championship, here on Sunday. However, with 136 points Gill still leads the Drivers’ championship leaderboard with second-placed Lohit Urs on a distant 91 points.

The day also saw a stalwart in Indian rally scene Arjun Balu, who served MRF for 17 years, announced his retirement from INRC. “A gentleman and dedicated rallyist,’’ said his navigator, Sujit Kumar. The Coimbatore-based Arjun Balu was an unsung hero and he ever remained the bridesmaid in the team. His best moment came in August 2001 Asia Zone Rally Championship at Changchun, China, where he beat his teammate Naren Kumar and many other world-class drivers. He is popularly known as the “Gentleman of Indian Motorsports”.

Meanwhile, it was a day to remember for Lohit Urs, who was struggling with his car all through the season.  After bagging his first win of the calendar year he said: “It was a great moment and I thoroughly enjoyed my drive today. The stages were fast and the Birur stage is comparable to the best in the world as it stayed true even after all the cars ran once with only about 10 per cent deterioration.’’

With Castrol-supported Arjun Rao Aroor of AR Racing pulling out of this event, Team MRF made a clean sweep winning the first three places. Bengal lad Amittrajit Ghosh (co-driver Ashwin Naik), also of MRF, came second while compatriot Gaurav Gill, who had gear box problems stalled just 4 kms before the finish on the last stage, managed to drive back to take third place and earned some valuable points to remain on top of the championship borad. “I had problems with the clutch and was stuck. I managed to engage a gear and finished the rally driving in the `third’ all the way,’’ quipped the 30-year-old Asia Pacific Rally Driver from Delhi.

In the 2000 N category, Karna Kadur, the talented youngster of Team Kadur, (co-driver Somonnita Ghosh) loved driving through his ancestral village Kadur in one of the stages, and rallied to beat overnight leaders Rahul Kantharaj and his sharp co-driver Vivek Y Bhatt clocking a time of 1 hour 32 min 12.2 secs. Overdrive editor Sirish Chandran and navigator Nikhil Vittal Pai finished third. But for a 10-second penalty Sirish and Nikhil would have come second.

Bangalore brothers, Balram CG and Raghuram CG wrapped up the event in the 1600 cc class with a huge margin of more than two minutes. Mohammed Ismail and co-driver Dannanjay came an opportunistic second followed by Pune-Bangalore pair Aniruddha Rangnekar and Anoop Kumar, who are leading the class in the National championship.

Raghu Nandan B (co-driver Adhiraj) won the 1400cc Rally Star cup with with Hrishikesh Thackersey and co-driver Ninad Mirajgaonkar taking the second followed by Pramod Raman and navigator Harish KN.

Local lad Shafeeq Ur Rehman with Ajith KP as co-driver pushed Amartej Buwal and co-driver Nakul Mendiratta to second while Philip Thomas and John Philip managed to take third.

  • Gill regains Speed INRC title

    By David Bodapati

Chikmagalur, 21 Nov 2009: Speed demon Gaurav Gill and co-driver Musa Sherif of Team MRF clinched the Speed Indian National Rally Championship for the year 2009 winning the Coffee Day Rally of Chikmagalur, the fifth and final round of the Speed INRC which saw a Red sweep as Team MRF won the top three places here on Sunday.

Excitement was at its feverish pitch as fancied Gaurav Gill kept his poise to pocket his second National championship title as the curtains came down on the Coffee Day Rally. With a comfortable lead in the first leg, Gill left his characteristic speed dashes and did not go all out. He displayed controlled aggression and was content to be second fastest today with the title in mind.  Though the official declaration is expected on Nov 28 on the pending protests, Gill is unlikely to be affected as he has an insurmountable 46 points.

Twentyeight-year-old Gill, who won the National Title under the colours of MRF two years ago, did an encore and promptly thanked the support. “I am happy to have done the job but the prime reason has been the perfect tyres. Today my gearbox stuck in the final stage but I wriggled out without shifting the gears thanks to my lead.”

Gaurav Gill, left, and Musa Sherif, who won the Coffee Day Rally to clinch the INRC title on Sunday. An INDIAinF1 image

It turned out to be MRF’s day with Lohith Urs (co-driver Sikanth Gowda) and Arjun Rao Aroor (Satish Rajagopal) doing just about enough to take the second and third placings respectively. Lohith gave Gill a close run and in fact was fastest in all the stages but lost 3 minutes due to a penalty for early arrival. “I am happy that it turned out to be Gaurav’s day as he had been the most consistent here. In my view, the good show has been due to the experimentation in the vehicles and the solidity of the tyres even in slushy conditions,” said Lohith. Their job was made easy as Red Rooster Racing drivers Vikram Mathias and Amittrajit Ghosh did not finish.

Girijashankar Joshy (Chandramouli M) won the 1600cc category with a time of 1 hr 42 min 26 seconds pushing Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Bhat) and Joseph C Jos (Royce Kizhakoodan) to second and third places respectively but it was Sujay S who earned a leg point today and won the National title in this class with 50 points. Joseph Jos and Rahul Kanthraj finished second and third in the National championship.

In the 1400 cc class, Vikram Devadasan (Nikhil Pai) won with a time of 1 hour 44 min, 57 seconds while Ahijeet N Pai (Satvik GA) finished second and Deepak Chinnappa (Chandrashekar) third. Vikram Devadasan won the National title with 54 points and Nikhil Pai, his Navigator won the Co-Drivers’ Championship. Francis K Jose (Manoj M) who finished fourth today bagged five points to take second place in the National championship. Dr Bikku Babu, who had 14 points before this rally, just managed to push Deepak Chinnappa (13) by one point. Deepak came third here to garner 7 points but the third place in the National Championship.

Karna Kadur had the taste of a National title in the Rally Star Cup. The greenhorn said it has been a learning ground complementing the good work of his navigator Somonita Ghosh, sister of the young racing talent Amittrajit Ghosh. Kadur finished sixth in this rally to earn three valuable points and being the fastest today he added three more leg points which helped him to win the National title with 52 points ahead of Balram CG (Raghuram CG) who won the rally here but fell short by two points for the national title. Phalguna Urs finished third in this rally to ensure his third place in the INRC with 45 points. Karan AM (Somaiah AG) were second today.

In the Maruti Gypsy class, the well endowed Kushwant Randhawa blamed it on the gears not holding its own losing the title eventually to Sandeep Sharma by just one point. Kushwant (49) enjoyed a narrow three point lead over Sandeep (46) before the start of this rally. Sandeep garnered all the 16 points here to take his tally to 62 while Kushwant could only get 12 and missed out with a total of 61 points.

  • Gill-Musa clinch Kerala rally

Kochi, 11 Mar 2007: Indian speed maestro Gaurav Gill of Delhi, stamped his class once again and conquered new region adding Kochi to his list of triumphs winning the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) round here in the state of Kerala on Sunday.

The fluent driving and aggressive approach saw the talented champion dominate all the stages on Day 2 and capture a well-deserved win. Veteran champion Jagat Nanjappa was all praise for the youngster as he displayed a class of his own. He was a clear winner by 1 minute 22 seconds at the 22nd Heera Rally, the first round of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC). With an overnight lead of 48 seconds, the speed master took it easy and it was just a matter of time to notch up another win.

With disciplined and meticulous Musa Sherif calling the pace notes, Gill, in only his second year on the rallying circuit, had a simple plan. To keep it cool and drive safe. And he did it, with confidence and class. Earlier, he had the strength of Farooq Ahmed as his navigator but Sherif too fitted in as well.

Gill’s teammates Lohitt Urs and co-driver Pradeep Kumar suffered an engine seizure on the day’s first stage and it became virtually a one-horse race. It was left to the pair of Arjun Rao Aroor and Satish Kumar to take the second place, way-beyond the winners.

Gill, looks forward to the Asia Pacific Rally Championship for Team MRF now after the Chandigarh-leg of the INRC in April. He decided to race against clock rather than take it easy. “There’s no point in being content just winning, it’s how you push yourself that matters and that’s exactly what I did,” said Gill. Gill was doing speeds of 177-km per hour, which distinctly reflected on the stage times as compared to Day 1.

“Today, I adopted a different approach to my driving, concentrating more on the technical aspects rather then sheer power. Results showed, didn’t they,” he asked in jest.

    Gill clocked 1 hour, 16 minutes, 44 seconds compared to Aroor’s 1:18.06.

Day 1: Earlier on Saturday March 10, the 25-year-old proved his superiority by shrugging off the handicap of suffering two flat tyres and managed a reduce the gap to 51 seonds behind the leaders. But by the end of the day he not only covered the distance but took a lead of 48 seconds ahead of Lohit Urs and co-driver Pradeep Kumar and also overtook Arjunrao Aroor and co-driver Satish Kumar.

With six stages completed, Gill, co-driven by Musa Sherif, was his usual self; going flat-out on the 15.06-kilometre opening stage at Illythodu, situated 75 kilometers from Kochi. Clocking 10.10 seconds, he had flats in his front tyre, which he managed to replace, and rear right tyres which he drove on to concede a 51-second lead to Arjun Balu. “I was driving fast and safe and I was aware of what I was doing,” explained Gill, who, over the next two stages, regained a 10-second lead after Balu was forced to pull out and Lohit Urs and Pradeep Kumar had problems aplenty due to a torn exhaust.

That was the beginning of Gill’s dominance, as in the next two stages he increased the lead to 48 seconds over Lohit, with Arjun Rao Aroor 1 minute, 27 seconds adrift of Lohit in third place.

While Gill was having his moments on the route, veterans Karandip Singh (Jaidas Menon), Arjun Balu (Kumar Ramaswamy), Prithveen Rajan (PVS Murthy) had their share of ‘luckless’ moments. Karandeep dropped out with a gearbox leak on the transport stage while Arjun, who pushed his car back to the starters’ ramp a day earlier during the ceremonial flag-off also pulled out along with Prithveen who suffered due to car problems at different stages.
