Max Verstappen tops FP2 ahead of Charles Leclerc: Monaco Grand Prix
Monaco, 27 May 2023: Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen topped the second practice session for this Sunday’s 2023 FIA Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by just under seven hundredths of a second. Third place went to Leclerc’s team-mate Carlos Sainz but the Spanish driver crashed in the final part of the session, bringing out the red flags.
In the early stages of the second hour of practice it was Verstappen who led the way with the Red Bull driver taking P1 thanks to a lap of 1:13.985. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton briefly supplanted the title leader by the slimmest of margins before the Dutchman resumed control with a time of 1:13.857.
Verstappen improved again to lower the benchmark to 1:13.312 as the early running on medium compound Pirelli tyres came to an end.
When the field began to move to soft tyres it was Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who made the first major move. The two-time champion jumped ahead of Verstappen with a lap of 1:12.786, which stood as the best time of the session for more than 10 minutes before Sainz made his soft-tyre leap with a lap of 1:12.569.
Verstappen slotted into third with his first effort on soft tyres, but then moved ahead with his next run of 1:12.462.
Leclerc then jumped to P2, marginally ahead of his Ferrari team-mate but that brought an end to significant improvements as Sainz then brought out the red flags. The Spanish driver clipped the barrier on the inside as he went to exit the Swimming Pool section.
The contact broke a suspension arm on the front right of his car and he slid into the barriers at the exit, causing further damage to the right side of his Ferrari.
Once his car and the debris had been cleared running resumed with 12 minutes left on the clock but there were few improvements.
Verstappen therefore took top spot ahead of the Ferrari duo, with Alonso fourth fastest ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. Hamilton finished sixth for Mercedes, while Sergio Perez was seventh in the second Red Bull RB19. Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas ended the session in P8 ahead of the Alpines Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

Monaco GP: Leclerc sets pace in FP1 from Perez in a hectic session
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ended up quickest in FP1 of F1 Monaco GP with Carlos Sainz third behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.
It was not a clean FP1 session in F1 Monaco GP with multiple offs for multiple drivers. The Swimming Pool section caught out many along with Turn 1 where Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen caused for yellow flag after going off.
His teammate Mick Schumacher had a gearbox problem and stopped at the pitlane entry to cause a red flag. There was more trouble for Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas too, with the Finn only completing two laps due to gearbox problem.
The bouncing issue was similar all across barring few cars, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc set the pace in FP1 of F1 Monaco GP with a 1m14.531s lap with teammate Carlos Sainz (1m14.601s) in third behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez (1m14.570s).
Perez also had a yellow flag moment at Turn 1 like his teammate Verstappen who ended up fourth. McLaren’s Lando Norris was fifth despite his weakened health which he is carrying on from Spanish GP. He missed the FIA press conference due to that.
His teammate Daniel Ricciardo put in a late lap to be seventh behind AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, who had a much better FP1 than the previous races. Mercedes’ George Russell was eighth with Lewis Hamilton 10th behind Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel.
The other AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda was 11th from the other Aston Martin of Lance Stroll where both the Silverstone-based outfit’s drivers set their best time on the soft compound. The only others to do that were the Williams pair in 15th and 18th.
The likes of Alpine and Haas did not have a best of the sessions, with Fernando Alonso only 13th and Esteban Ocon 16th, while Kevin Magnussen was 14th and Schumacher in 19th. Williams’ Alexander Albon was 15th with Nicholas Latifi in 18th.
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon slotted in 16th after complaining of bouncing with Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu in 17th and his teammate Bottas classified 20th but with no laps done.

Dutch, Spanish, Monaco GPs postponed; F2, F3 too – due to Corona
London, 19 March 2020: In view of the continued global spread of COVID-19 and after ongoing discussions with the FIA and the three promoters it has today been confirmed that the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix 2020, Formula 1 Gran Premio De España 2020 and Formula 1 Grand Prix De Monaco 2020 will be postponed.
Due to the ongoing and fluid nature of the COVID-19 situation globally, Formula 1, the FIA and the three promoters have taken these decisions in order to ensure the health and safety of the travelling staff, championship participants and fans, which remains our primary concern.
Formula 1 and the FIA continue to work closely with affected promoters and local authorities to monitor the situation and take the appropriate amount of time to study the viability of potential alternative dates for each Grand Prix later in the year should the situation improve.
Formula 1 and the FIA expect to begin the 2020 Championship season as soon as it’s safe to do so after May and will continue to regularly monitor the ongoing COVID-19 situation.F2, F3 too put-off:
Following the announcement that the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Formula 1 Grands Prix have been postponed, the rounds of the FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 Championships which run alongside F1 at the same venues will consequently be postponed as well.
F2 and F3 CEO Bruno Michel said: “Together with the FIA and Formula 1, we’re closely monitoring the situation and we are studying possible new dates should the situation improve.
“For the time being, all F2 and F3 track activities are on hold. This of course includes our April testing in Barcelona (F2) and in Budapest (F3), along with a two-day test in Barcelona at the end of May (also for F3).
