Wipro enters F1, becomes tech partner for McLaren

Hungary was a step forward: Zak Brown at the FIA press conference

Q: Zak, let’s begin with you. Hungary, obviously a strong performance, the best performance of the season so far. How do you feel about the level of that performance that weekend and the steps on the journey back to competitiveness for your team?
Zak BROWN: Hungary was definitely a step forward. Good to see both cars get home in the points. Sixth and tenth isn’t exactly what gets McLaren too excited but it was definitely forward progress.
Q: Where are you now on the long-term plans in terms of power units. Obviously we’ve heard all these stories of various steps along the way from winter testing right through to the summer break. Has anything changed? What can you tell us?
ZB: I think like all racing teams, we’re working on our 2018 drivers. We obviously announced Stoffel, which was never in doubt that he was going to continue with us, and we’re working on our second driver, some two-time World Champion, and making sure we have the most competitive race car for next year.
Q: Hasegawa-san, coming to you, your side of that story. Obviously Hungary, a step forward, your updated engine here, and also where do you feel it’s going, the relationship with McLaren?
Yusuke HASEGAWA: Of course, in Hungary we are very happy. Actually, we are very relieved we get the points. That is performance we are not satisfied with but it is a minimum level of performance we have to achieve, so we are relieved about that. So, still the matter, we need to update our engine performance definitely to convince McLaren as well and to satisfy us.
Q: And the updated engine this weekend, what can you tell us about that? How much more performance is there in Stoffel’s car?
YH: OK, it’s actually… we had planned to introduce a spec-4 engine here but we failed. Actually we didn’t match to the schedule. So that we have a halfway upgrade. We called it 3.5 and 3.6 but I think we can introduce some decent upgrade here but we don’t stop the improvement.
Q: You have Franz next to you this afternoon. Is Toro Rosso still a possible contender for a second supply of engines in 2018? Are those talks still live?
YH: I don’t think so. We don’t have an official conversation about that. So although Mr Yamamoto visited Dr Marko, because we need to discuss about Super Formula, the Japanese formula series, and we have Pierre Gasly the Red Bull young driver, so that we have some communication with him – but other than that the Formula One engine supply, we didn’t have an actual conversation.
Q: Franz, just picking up on that, as far as you’re concerned, that was never really something that was in the offing; you’re sticking with what you’ve got: Renault engines going forward.
Franz TOST: No, Hasegawa-san has just answered that there has never an official negotiation or talks between Honda and Toro Rosso.
Q: We spoke to Christian in the first part of this press conference about your Red Bull Young Driver programme – obviously it’s been tremendously successful over the years but he was saying there’s no real hot prospects. You’ve got some young drivers in the pipeline but it’s just that sometimes there’s plenty of good drivers and sometimes there aren’t. I just wanted to know what your perspective was on what’s been achieved if you like and whether there’s still that same enthusiasm on the Red Bull side, when you consider that McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes have all got some very hot prospects on the threshold of Formula One now?
FT: I think Red Bull is in a fantastic situation because there are four drivers who are able to win races which they’ve showed in the past: Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat and there’s the reigning Formula Two champion, Pierre Gasly who is in the pipeline, who is also very successful in Japan. That means this infrastructure which Red Bull has built up is so successful and why should they change anything? You should also take into consideration that something can happen at Red Bull Racing – an accident and so on – and they can just take a driver from Toro Rosso and this is why Toro Rosso is educating drivers for Red Bull. Young drivers are coming but it takes another two or three years maybe until we can discuss to bring them into Formula One and I think that Red Bull is really in a fantastic position with the driver line-up.
QUESTIONS FROM THE FLOOR
Q: (Graham Harris – Motorsport Monday, Motorsport Week.com) Franz, Carlos Sainz is going to be spending his fourth year next year in Toro Rosso if we take Christian’s comments in Austria that they’ve activated his contract for next year. This will be the first time that a driver has actually spent a fourth season in the team. Who will be sitting next to him? Have you decided? Will it be Daniil next year as well or would you be evaluating that later in the season?
FT: We will see. As I just mentioned before, Red Bull is in a fantastic situation. Why should they dismiss these highly skilled drivers? Red Bull has financed all the careers so far of Carlos Sainz and now he is ready to win races if he has a proper car so why give him to another team, to an opponent or whatever? And Daniil Kvyat was this year a little bit unlucky because many times we couldn’t provide him with a reliable and fast car and I’m convinced that once he gets this car that he will show his talent, because he did it already in the past. He won the GP3 championship before he came to us. He finished on the podium at Red Bull Racing in China and he can race and he has the ability to be successful and as I mentioned before, Pierre Gasly is in the pipelines, which means Red Bull is really in a very strong position and there’s no necessity to change something, but we will see. The driver line-up will be decided by Red Bull in the next months.
Q: (Abhishek Takle – Midday) To Zak and Hasegawa-san: firstly, the upgrades that you introduced this weekend, have they delivered as promised, and secondly, it’s been reported that Honda has been working with Ilmor and has discovered some good gains on the power unit front. Hasegawa-san, firstly, can you confirm that you’re working with Ilmor and Zak, couldn’t Ilmor’s involvement convince McLaren to stick with Honda for the future?
YH: First of all, about the performance upgrade, it is very difficult to compare the previous engine to this engine because this is a completely different circuit but from the data point of view, we see some good upgrade of the performance here.
And regarding Ilmor consultancy, we do not disclose any partner of a consultancy or a supplier or any partnership. But we don’t deny about any kind of consultancy or partnership from outside. We have many partners in the development.
ZB: A good question was what do we think about Ilmor. As Hasegawa-san said, it’s really up to Honda to discuss what their activities are. All I would say is that Ilmor as an organisation that has worked with McLaren in the past and is very successful and very good at what they do.
I wouldn’t think we’ve been satisfied all year but I think Hasegawa-san’s not been satisfied with how things have gone so we have seen some improvements here at Spa, not to the level we’d hoped for but some improvement nonetheless.
Q: (Dieter Rencken – Racing Lines) Zak, bearing in mind what the other two gentlemen said about there being no official discussions between Honda and Toro Rosso although there were talks at high echelons, I believe that the McLaren/Honda contract has got some form of veto or approval clause where you’ve got to approve somebody else which I believe you did with Sauber. Have you been asked to bless some form of Toro Rosso/Honda deal at all? Has that come up?
ZB: We did bless the Sauber arrangement which we were official asked to do and in fact started to get to work on a gearbox. I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to disclose any conversations we’ve had. What I would say is we would be very supportive of Honda having a relationship with Toro Rosso and have been asked by Christian if we would be in a position to help with a gearbox if asked, so I think that’s about as far as I will go on sharing any conversations.
YH: We didn’t ask to start a conversation with Toro Rosso to McLaren actually because we didn’t have any official conversation so that it is…
Q: (Livio Oricchio – GloboEsporte.com) Zak, it looks like Ferrari and Mercedes won’t supply the power units to McLaren, in the case that McLaren has decided not to continue working with Honda. And also, we believe, as Cyril said, that very possibly Renault won’t also supply, so it looks like you don’t have other options. Is that correct?
ZB: No. We’re not going to give a running commentary on our power unit situation. I know it’s of keen interest to everyone but we’ll say something when we have something to say.
Q: (Inaudible) Zak, do you feel within the team a difference for Stoffel now that his contract for ’18 has been announced and this weekend, racing at home, is there more pressure, is he different or is he relieved that he will continue for next year for you?
ZB: Well, we always intended to put him in the car in ’18. Of course, any driver, when it becomes public at their home Grand Prix, I think that’s a nice feeling so Stoffel has been great all year for a rookie. He has been in a very difficult situation, we’ve not given him a faster, reliable race car which is that much more difficult when you don’t have the experience of someone like your teammate so he’s been a treat to work with and Hasegawa-san, I think you would agree, he’s been a real star this year.
Q: (Graham Harris – Motorsport Monday, Motorsport Week.com) Zak, on the assumption – and it’s obviously an assumption – that you persuade Fernando to stay for next year, and he was wanting to do this, would we see another possible attempt at the Indy 500, given that this year he was very competitive and could have possibly won it on his first time out? Is that something you would perhaps dangle as a carrot to keep him there for next year?
ZB: No. We would love to go back to Indianapolis, Fernando would love to go back to Indianapolis. He did an unbelievable job but it will conflict with Monaco again and we’re not going to be in the same situation that we were this year in Monaco, so unfortunately he can’t be in two places at once but we’d certainly love to do it with him again in the future.
Q: (Abhishek Takle – Midday) A follow-up to what you said earlier, Zak, on not giving a running commentary on the power unit situation, how soon though do you need to have something to say? How soon do you need to be in a position to announce something because obviously whichever way you go will those influence your signing of Fernando for next year?
ZB: Well, I think all racing teams right now – whether it’s McLaren or Toro Rosso or anyone else down the grid – we’re heading into 2018 so we need to be finalising all of our activities, whether that’s driver, car design so that will be soon. As we all know, soon as the summer break is over it seems like it all starts to happen in Formula One so the timetable we’ve got to work to to get ready for next year.
Q: (Ysef Harding – Xiro Xone News) This week, we talked about e-sports and how some e-sports events have been a platform for inspiring young drivers to have a way into motorsports. And now this week F1 has launched an e-sports championship. Do you feel these platforms are good for young people who are interested in motorsports and that could possibly find an inroad into motorsports through this?
FT: I said already two years ago that you have to do something for e-sports because if you want to attract the young people, then e-sports is a very important game. What I said is that maybe ten or may nine o’ clock in the morning on Sunday there should be an e-game race here at the racetrack, just to attract the young people, to come to Formula One, to see Formula One and to involve them in this complete package. Therefore I’m really happy that Liberty media managed to come up with this game.
YH: Sorry, actually I don’t have many opinions about the current operation or situation but I expect to make it a very attractive sport especially for the younger people.
ZB: Yeah, I think e-sports is great. McLaren was the first team to announce our World’s Fastest Gamer and whoever ultimately wins that will be our simulator driver next year. I think it’s great what Liberty and Formula One have done and I think ultimately what you have with these sports is… Motor racing is a very expensive and difficult sport to get youngsters involved in, unlike football where you can go to school and you have a football and a pitch all ready to go so I think e-sports not only will generate a younger audience but it will also almost become the grass roots of motorsports and be able to expose a younger audience to what it’s like to drive a race car in a more inexpensive user-friendly way, so I think it’s great that we’re all embracing it.
Q: (Dieter Rencken – Racing Lines) Zak, I’m not asking for a running commentary but I would just like to address the issue of engine supply to the teams, the FIA regulation being that you can only supply three teams with an engine. Now at the end of the day, unless you can persuade somebody to take the Honda engine it looks like you’re going to have to approach somebody to supply a fourth engine supply. How do you stand with the FIA on this issue?
ZB: We speak with the FIA on a regular basis on lots of topics, being that they’re the governing body of the sport so I’ll leave the conversations that we’ve had, power-unit related, to ourselves and see what transpires.

Alonso to race at Indy500, will miss Monaco F1 GP
After an absence of 38 years, McLaren is to return to the Indianapolis 500 next month, using Honda engines.
On May 28th 2017 McLaren will enter a single car in the 101st Indianapolis 500, powered by Honda. The car will be run by the Andretti Autosport team, headed by founder, owner and Chief Executive Officer Michael Andretti, a former IndyCar champion who raced in Formula 1 for McLaren alongside the legendary Ayrton Senna for a single season (1993) and is the son of three-time IndyCar champion and one-time Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti.
The McLaren-Honda-Andretti entry, a Dallara DW12 chassis as used by all IndyCar teams, will be driven by current McLaren-Honda Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, who has started 275 Grands Prix, has won 32 of those races, has become Formula 1 world champion twice, and has been Formula 1 runner-up three times.
Its engine will be a Honda 2.2-litre twin-turbo V6, limited by IndyCar regulations to 12,000rpm.
Since the Indianapolis 500 will take place on May 28th, the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix, Fernando will not race at Monaco this year. The Indianapolis 500 will be the only 2017 IndyCar race in which Fernando will compete, however, and the Monaco Grand Prix will therefore be the only 2017 Formula 1 race in which he will not compete. Former world champioin, Jenson Button will replace Alonso and will drive his car at Monaco.
Alonso said: “I am immensely excited that I’ll be racing in this year’s Indy 500, with McLaren, Honda and Andretti Autosport.
“The Indy 500 is one of the most famous races on the global motorsport calendar, rivalled only by the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Monaco Grand Prix [which Fernando has won twice, one of those victories at the wheel of a McLaren (in 2007)], and it’s of course a regret of mine that I won’t be able to race at Monaco this year. But Monaco will be the only 2017 Grand Prix I’ll be missing, and I’ll be back in the cockpit of the McLaren-Honda MCL32 for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in early June.
“I’ve never raced an IndyCar car before, and neither have I ever driven on a super-speedway, but I’m confident that I’ll get to grips with it fast. I’ve watched a lot of IndyCar action on TV and online, and it’s clear that great precision is required to race in close proximity with other cars on the far side of 220mph [354km/h]. I realise I’ll be on a steep learning curve, but I’ll be flying to Indianapolis from Barcelona immediately after the Spanish Grand Prix, practising our McLaren-Honda-Andretti car at Indy from May 15th onwards, hopefully clocking up a large number of miles every day, and I know how good the Andretti Autosport guys are. I’ll be proud to race with them, and I intend to mine their knowledge and expertise for as much info as I possibly can.
“I’ve won the Monaco Grand Prix twice, and it’s one of my ambitions to win the Triple Crown [the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours], which has been achieved by only one driver in the history of motorsport: Graham Hill. It’s a tough challenge, but I’m up for it. I don’t know when I’m going to race at Le Mans, but one day I intend to. I’m only 35: I’ve got plenty of time for that,” concluded Alonso.

McLaren ropes in Zac Brown

Zac Brown image by McLaren Technology Group Woking, 21 Nov 2016: McLaren Technology Group announced on Monday that Zak Brown has accepted the position of Executive Director, McLaren Technology Group, commencing on a soon-to-be-finalised date next month.
“In this senior role, Zak’s appointment will be a significant part of a restructuring programme that will align the Group’s commercial and strategic operations relating to achieving success in Formula 1,” said the release.
Clearly, the group is focusing on rebuilding its commercial work after the departure of long-time architect of the group, CEO Ron Dennis. However, a new CEO is yet to come.
Reporting directly to McLaren Technology Group’s Executive Committee, both Jonathan Neale (Chief Operating Officer) and Zak Brown (Executive Director) will jointly lead the businesses as part of the first step in the Group’s transition to a new and strengthened organisational structure. The process of identifying and recruiting a new Group Chief Executive Officer will continue.

FIA disallows Alonso from taking part in Bahrain GP
Sakhir, 31 March 2016: An FIA press release says, Following an examination undertaken this morning at the Bahrain International Circuit Medical Centre, it has been decided that McLaren Honda F1 Team driver Fernando Alonso should not take part in this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix. Two sets of chest CT scans were compared and it was decided that there was insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to compete on safety grounds.
A repeat chest scan has been requested before the Chinese Grand Prix, and the results will be considered before allowing him to race there.
The Press note was released by Matteo Bonciani, FIA Formula One Head of Communications & Media Delegate on Thursday.

Formula 1 returns to action this weekend at one of the world’s most challenging circuits. Spa-Francorchamps, situated deep in Belgium’s Ardennes forest, is the ultimate high-speed test of man and machine; it’s one of the highlights of the season.
Spa-Francorchamps facts & stats
Spa-Francorchamps has been synonymous with Formula 1 for more than 60 years. The track featured in the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1950, but its current design bears little resemblance to the original 14km layout. The modern track is much shorter (7.004km) and safer, but it’s still breathtakingly quick: the average speed is 230km/h.
The track is the longest on the calendar – more than twice the length of F1’s shortest circuit in Monte-Carlo – and it’s littered with challenging corners and undulations. The pre-requisites to success are threefold: commitment by the driver, an aerodynamically efficient car, and a powerful engine – more than 70 per cent of the lap is spent at full throttle.
Races at Spa are rarely straightforward owing to the fickle climate in the Ardennes. Heavy rain prior to the start of the 1997 race resulted in F1’s first ever Safety Car start and it can often be raining on one part of the track and dry on another.
Should this year’s race be dry, the teams will use Pirelli’s Soft and Medium slick tyre compounds, as they did in Hungary last time out. The Medium (Prime) rubber is likely to be the most effective over a race stint because its composition and construction are made for the high cornering loads experienced at Spa, while the Soft (Option) compound will be better-suited to one-lap performance during qualifying.
McLaren has an enviable record at the Belgian Grand Prix. In 1968, the team won its first world championship grand prix at Spa-Francorchamps, and it now has a total of 14 wins and 11 poles on Belgian soil. Jenson Button is a previous winner at Spa and his rookie team-mate Kevin Magnussen is hoping for a repeat of his previous successes at the track in Formula 3 and Renault World Series 3.5.

“There’s no better place to resume the season than at Spa-Francorchamps. It’s one of the best circuits in the world, and it’s a place where driving a Formula 1 car always feels incredible. As ever, I’m really looking forward to driving out of the pits for the first time on Friday morning, and just throwing the car into some of the greatest corners in motorsport.
“I had one of my best weekends of the year at Spa last year, qualifying and finishing sixth after running closely with a bunch of cars through the whole race. It wasn’t my best finish of the year, but it was positive because I got the maximum out of the package we had, and was able to fight closely with a number of other drivers, which felt satisfying.
“Hopefully, there will be positives to take out of this weekend as well.”

“It’s felt like an incredibly long four weeks, and I really can’t wait to get back into the cockpit, particularly as we’re headed to Spa, one of the best drivers’ tracks in the world.
“I love Spa: I won there in British Formula 3 in 2011, and in Formula Renault 3.5 in both 2012 and ’13, and I just love the fast, flowing nature of the circuit. Hooking up a quick lap there during qualifying is just fantastic, because the track just flows from one corner to the next, and the car is so fast and assured that it almost feels effortless. “We had a disappointing race in Hungary to send us into the summer break, but we’ve analysed the issues we encountered, and we believe we now understand what went wrong. More important, we all head to Belgium feeling positive and refreshed, and incredibly keen to get back to work.
“The first half of the season has shown signs of both promise and disappointment, but, through it all, Jenson and Kevin have each driven some particularly inspired races, made very few mistakes and always extracted the maximum from the package. Equally, the team has worked hard at both the factory and the racetrack to improve performance – and we’re now starting to see those returns.
“Spa and Monza are tracks where every team runs a unique downforce package, so it won’t be until Singapore – where we resume with a more conventional set-up – that we’ll get a clearer read on our progress, but I think we have reasons to be optimistic. The operational changes we’ve implemented over the course of the season have taken time to bed-in, but I think we’ll certainly see a more pronounced upswing in performance over these final eight races of the year.”

Monisha raises voice where other teams fail to talk about FIA’s eye wash of cost-cutting measures

PRESS CONFERENCE
The World Motor Sport Council meets next week, it’s the deadline for regulations for 2015. In yesterday’s press conference with the drivers they all said that cost control was the first order of priority for the sport. Are you wher you hoped to be on that subject as the deadline approaches? A question for all of you. Eric maybe you’d like to start.
Eric BOULLIER: Well, I think it depends on where you want to put the shift. There were some discussions, they was some real will to do something for the sport from some teams and I think at the end we achieved some decisions. I don’t know yet obviously how much we are going to save. Is it enough, is it not enough? I think it’s a bit to early to say. But at least let’s say there was a commitment to do something and we tried to.
Monisha?
Monisha KALTENBORN: Well, in my view we are clearly not there, where we should be and where we wanted to be, at least from our team’s perspective. I also don’t think we have achieved so far any measurable cost cutting. For us the situation is a little unclear actually at the moment, at least in my understanding if you mention the World Motor Sport Council there was a decision taken last year by the Council in which they endorsed cost-cutting as a target and they also agreed in principle to the cost cap and the FIA was mandated to implement that. Since then other decisions have been taken by other groups going in a different direction. Following that amongst other teams, ours as well, the non-Strategy Group teams I’d say were asked to bring proposals in about how you can achieve a sustainable cost base while still promoting competition. We did that, we also didn’t get anywhere on that. In my understanding I really wonder what the FIA is now going to do and how Formula One is going to be governed in this respect.
Christian, do you have any comment on that?
Christian HORNER: We spent quite a while talking about things and so on and we’ve agreed a couple of things next year which will save money. Testing is reduced, testing will be in Europe rather than overseas, wind tunnel time and CFD ratios have been further reduced. But I think what’s important to say is that everything that was agreed in the Formula One Commission meeting earlier this week was agreed unanimously. That means every team was around the table and every team had the right to vote against it but everything that went through went through on a unanimous basis. We’ve got what we’ve got. I think the most important thing now going forward is stability.
Marco, are you where you hoped to be on cost control?
Marco MATTIACCI: First of all, I think it is remarkable that the drivers are underlining this point. At the same time, yes, I think we did some progress. Probably we could have achieved some more. But I keep stressing the point that according to me Formula One should focus at the same time on how to appeal to a broader audience, because I think there is a huge potential for this sport. So I guess even cost reduction has to be faced in a much more complex point of view, a large point of view: how to make this product more appealing, how to attract more sponsors. I guess yes we are working extremely hard to see where are the opportunities to reduce the cost. I would like to work even harder to see where we can increase the appeal to wider audience.
Toto?
Toto WOLFF: Yeah, we had lots of meeting about finding out where we could reduce costs. It’s an ongoing saga. You know it’s not the case that some teams are against cutting costs and other are for. We are all for sensible cost cutting because even the big teams need to make sure we keep it within a certain framework. We need to make sure that Christian is not running away with the costs. Christian needs to make sure that Ferrari is not running away with the costs. This is why we are all in favour, but it is a tricky thing and it’s difficult to get everybody under one umbrella. So I guess that what we have done for next year in reducing the in-season testing again, probably to even less the following year. We came back to Europe. All these are sensible steps and this must be on our constant agenda to further reduce the costs.
Thank you for that. And finally Franz: your thoughts?
Franz TOST: We have achieved some goals to reduce costs, like Christian mentioned before, with less testing and testing only in Europe and the reduced costs on the aerodynamic side. And we will also in future discuss possibilities to reduce costs. I think this is a longer process because this year we are coming up with a new regulation, and as we all know a regulation change is always in connection with costs increasing. I just hope that in the future we will always continue to discuss how to reduce costs and I am convinced that sooner or later we will come to a target where all the teams are satisfied.
OK and second one to all you. There have been extensive discussions on wider changes on things to things like format and regulations in recent weeks, things like altering the Friday programme at race weekend and tyre blankets – all that kind of thing. Which measure would you personally most like to see implemented? Maybe we’ll start with Marco.
MM: Again I want to have a wider view about how to improve Formula One and the appeal. According to me, if I could push the button tomorrow, I would like to see a much deeper, wider engagement toward the audience with the drivers. In the end, Formula One is innovation but at the same it’s entertainment and I think that it has huge opportunity for improvement, for revenues, in engaging the audience, the fan more to Formula One. All the other initiatives sound to me OK to reduce some costs but they sound to me tactical and they don’t see the bigger picture, the bigger potential in Formula One.
Christian?
CH: I think foremost and utmost Formula One is a show and it has to entertain. I think a race like we had in Montreal is Formula One at it’s best. That’s what we need to have and more of it – week in, week out. We need to give the public more access, more behind-the-scenes information and engage them more in what we do. I think we need more of Montreal. How we achieve that of course is the difficulty.
Franz?
FT: The most important thing about Formula One, which we should not forget, is the entertainment and when we came back to the Friday running which we have in this year and as we had it in the past, this is something which was quite important for the organisers. We have to think how we can bring the cars together, because as we can see today there are two cars far ahead and as long as the parity of the power units is not at a similar level it is difficult to achieve interesting races, apart from the fact if something happens, which was unforeseen. Once more it’s a new regulation, it’s the first year that we are in there. I think we also have to work for the public to understand it better, what we have produced; how this new power unit works and how the new regulation has to be interpreted. I think we will do this in future just to increase the interest of the people in Formula One.
Two silver cars out in front, that’s something I’m sure you wouldn’t want to change Toto, but what would you like to see implemented.
TW: You know I find it amazing that we are starting this press conference with two questions about cost reduction and cost savings and talking the sport down. We are in a fantastic new venue, we have just come back to Austria to an historic race, this is the most amazing place now. We have had some exciting races. I admit that lucky for us we are quite dominant, similar to how Red Bull has been in a couple of years and we must talking stop talking ourselves down. I cannot imagine any other sport that would start the press conference in the way like we do, just talking about what it not good. But coming back to your question: I think that what is important is the show and the entertainment and engaging with the audience, to what Marco said. Probably if I could pinpoint it to a single item, I would say let’s stop testing. This is not to maintain our advantage. This is our own little agenda but it’s not important in the broader view of Formula One. But it’s something which is not important for the spectators. I think they want to have a good show at the weekends. Can we do less testing at the beginning of the season? Probably we can but then there is a new engine manufacturer you need to take of him as well to get enough miles. Then, some of us wanted to get rid of testing completely during the season. Why not go back to zero. But it was not possible and you would be surprised who was actually in favour of in-season testing. If I could make a decision I would say let’s not test in season any more.
Monisha?
MK: I agree with Toto that we have an excellent product here. We have a great platform, it’s very attractive. I think it’s high time that we really focused on the people we are doing this for. For a team it’s mainly the fan and for companies its consumers, customers at the end. We need to really pick up these people, give them a great moment – that they want to come with their kids, the next generation, and see that they are having a great show here. They need to remember this kind of a moment, which is not really happening that much. Now race in the past have been exciting or not exciting. We’ve gone through years where one team dominated, so we’ve had all that before and we’re still here. So we realty need to get out to the fans, to these consumers and make sure that they keep their attention to Formula One and that’s something we have not been doing recently.
OK and finally, Eric?
EB: Well, I’m the same as everybody. It’s the start of a new regulation so obviously there was a lot of change over the last winter. We just want to see closer which makes the entertainment better which will allow us to engage more with the fans and keep the fans happy and I think by having closer racing first you have to bring some stability to the regulation.
QUESTIONS FROM THE FLOOR
Q: (Kate Walker – Crash.net): In relation to the answers you’ve all just given, we’ve just an awful lot about fan engagement and solidifying F1’s profile in various territories. Now Red Bull have got the showcar team. I would like to know from each of you, and Christian if you want to answer as well, what it is specifically to boost Formula One’s profile in your own country and in other territories that we visit away from a race weekend?
CH: Red Bull are extremely active in that area. We have a showcar team that visits countries all around the world, goes to towns or places that Formula One hasn’t been before, isn’t expected to be seen. This year it will run in 25 different venues. We engage with the fan base – we have more than 8 million fans worldwide that are following us through social media, our digital platforms and so on. We’re generating a huge amount of hits, whether it’s through a regulation change or to demonstrate the build of a car. So we are engaging with our fans and we see our fanbase growing. What else are Red Bull doing? They’ve brought Formula One here. It’s fantastic to be back in Austria. It’s fantastic to have a home grand prix and I think what Dietrich Mateschitz has done in achieving this race and the amount of fans and spectators that there are here this weekend is great to see and it’s great to see the enthusiasm that there is for Formula One in Austria.
Marco?
MM: It can be done more, definitely. But we have a tradition, we have a thousand of Ferrari fan clubs worldwide, we are dramatically increasing our digital experience, we have almost 12 million people on Facebook. But I think that has to be all the teams, a force, because working together in a synergic probably we can sell the product more. Definitely in the real life we have showcase car but I think today the younger audience spend a lot of time on the web, so I think probably to create an experience, even from a brand perspective, on the web is fundamental and we are working on this. So, that’s important.
Franz, what are you doing?
FT: I think there’s rarely a company involved in Formula One doing more than Red Bull. As Christian already mentioned Dietrich Mateschitz, Red Bull, bought the grand prix back to Europe, thanks and congratulations for this really fantastic event and for this extraordinary facility. And we from Toro Rosso are very closely linked to Red Bull and we have, for the next month, a couple of showcar runs in Russia – because we prepare Russia for the Grand Prix – Formula One is not very well known over there and we sent Daniil Kvyat there. In addition to this, next weekend he will be in Moscow for a press conference, there’s also the Renault World Series race where he will be, just to promote the race for Russia. And we have a lot of sponsor activities in Europe with CEPSA but also in America and Canada with Nova Chemicals and I think Toro Rosso is pushing quite hard to satisfy the fans and make Formula One popular.
Monisha?
MK: Well, with the size of team we have, we don’t have a demo team that we can go around and do these things – but we try to do whatever we can, particularly with our partners – like with the Telmex Group in Latin America, a lot of activities down there and that’s where we try to support, of course, Formula One also with the race also coming up hopefully in Mexico to do something there. I think where we could do more is particularly around a race weekend. The smaller teams could get together with the others and make the crowds then benefit here more if our drivers would maybe do more – or we could just interact more with people.
Eric?
EB: Well, it’s similar, y’know. We are engaging a lot through social media. We are doing some events, we have a demo team running. Jenson was doing a Russian tour as well last week to meet with the media and press conference – so we are almost activating the same.
Toto?
TW: Yeah, I’d like to add to that, social media is growing at an exponential rate with us. On good days we have more than 50,000 new likes on our Facebook site. We are almost having the size of the Mercedes audience and this shows that that audiences are probably transitioning towards other platforms. Whether you can monetise it in the same way, I doubt it…yet. In terms of activation, we do a lot. We have show car runs everywhere. Mercedes is just launching a big, global campaign around Formula One. You can see much more activation around Mercedes-Benz’s motorsport activities globally – and this of course is to promote the team but also to promote Formula One everywhere in the world.
Q: (Kate Walker – crash.net) A lot of you mentioned social media in your responses. Now we saw in the Montreal weekend that the commercial rights holder had said that he viewed social media as a flash in the pan and something that didn’t have the longevity to require our support. If we have the commercial rights holder working against social media, what can the teams do in the face of that opposition?
MM: This impression that the commercial rights holder is working against media, I think as every evolution, you need to do this carefully, considering that there is a financial model behind, to be migrated to a different way. Not necessarily you need to embrace everything without a proper thinking. There is a certain audience that can be interested that is present on social media and another audience that cannot be interested. So, I believe that there is work in progress and probably that will come up with some kind of solution in the short term but I didn’t have the perception that he’s working against social media.
Monisha, anything to add?
MK: I’m also not aware that he’s so much against it. We know that it’s taken a while for Formula One to do more in social media and it’s a fact of life today. You can’t ignore it. And since we do have a product which is characterised also that much by exclusivity, I think we have to be careful and assess very carefully how we open it and how we can still monetise on it because these are revenue streams which, if they come in correctly and the distribution is also the right way, it has, of course, an impact on all the other issues we are combating right now. So, it’s all somehow connected – but you have to be careful when you open up to these kind of mechanisms.
Toto?
TW: What Monisha says is very true, because we have exclusive content and the commercial rights holder needs to have a long-term strategy about how to monetise the content and if you generate a billion out of traditional TV, you of course are struggling in the short term to give everything to the social media, or into the digital world where you can’t generate revenue yet. So, I think we are at the verge of probably entering into a new era, where it’s going to transition into the digital world – but you have to be very careful, you have to plan and you need to balance the interests of your current partners, and value your current partners, and at the same time make sure that you’re transitioning the business case and the business model into the future.
Q: (Luke Smith – NBC Sports) Marco, we saw that Gene Haas was spending a lot of time in the Ferrari garage over the Montreal weekend. How are talks going regarding an engine supply and could I get maybe some views on his entry for 2016 with Haas Formula?
MM: We are doing some progress and naturally to enter in Formula One, it’s a challenge. You need to be competitive and so I think there is, again, work in progress and probably a decision will be made in the coming weeks – but it is important, the positive thing I believe is to have Americans who start to look at investing in Formula One, it’s really an important topic to stress – because this is, at the moment, the largest and most important economy in the world. So, it’s a good sign that Americans start to look at investing in Formula One. Aside, if you look at Haas or someone else, I really welcome United States to look in Formula One.
Q: (Mikhail Rudoi – Autodigest Belarus) Question for Marco. When you have any difficulty or problems or working questions, do you call to Stefano Domenicali to get some maybe advice or do you do everything by your self?
MM: I think maybe the main characteristic of a good manager is to listen and to ask question. I think Stefano has been an asset of the company and is an important asset for me – so definitely I ask questions to Stefano. I listen to Stefano. At the same time I’m the one that makes the choice to bring a new direction within the team.
Q: (Dieter Rencken – Racing Lines) Gentleman and lady, after about a year’s worth of meetings across the world, Formula One Commissions, whatever, the best that that the best brains in the most cerebral sport in the world could come up with was a couple of savings on wind tunnel time, a reduction on race team headcount of two, curfews increased by one or two hours per race weekend… and yet we’re supposed to be talking about cost saving. Is this honestly the best that can be done and what sort of figure have you come up with. You’re all business people, you must know roughly what the savings will be.
CH: Dieter, you’re very ill-informed because we didn’t reduce the number of people by two, we kept it at the same, so… Look, it’s an interesting topic and you’ve followed this and written a lot of column-inches about it – but costs in Formula One are one element, the show is another and I think that you have to be careful not to make decisions that affect the show. And there were a lot of things that were tabled that, when put in front of promoters and other people that have a vested interest in the sport said, ‘well hang on a second,’ You shorten Fridays – and you guys were moaning about it as much as anyone – to say well that damages the show, that damages the promoters ability to sell tickets and put bums on seats. So, when you put a group in the room who all have vested interests, whether it’s the commercial rights holder, the teams and the governing body, and you talk things through, then you realise well actually, while there is cost associated with it, by reducing it, we’ll create more harm than good. So, therefore, some decisions were made on Wednesday which I believe were in the best interests of the sport. Now, some of them aren’t going to save any money – well, most of them aren’t going to save any money but hopefully what we will get out of it will ultimately be a better show.
Monisha?
MK: Well, I said in the beginning that in my view not any measurable cost-reduction has been achieved so far – but I think we have to look at a bigger picture here which is that it’s also been said before, we have to focus at the end of the day on the fans and on the consumers and we have to start right there: what image does Formula One have with them? And that’s not a good image right now and that’s where it all starts. So, if you find out what it is, you probably come at some point of time, then to points like the cost, that why do they think we may be burning money here. It’s very difficult for somebody new to come into the sport today because the financial levels are very, very high. It’s very difficult for established teams – private teams – to stay in the sport, even if you’ve done that for 20 years or more. So we have to try to tackle it from there and see, can we, can we do something on the costs? That’s just one aspect of it. What can we do on the show? Because the revenues at the end of the day matter. If they are right. They are generated by the fans and the consumers, not by us teams – we’re just spending the money out there. If that’s right, all these other areas again will come into place because probably you’re at a sensible level of costs, you can make it exciting again, keep a diversity in the sport, which the sport needs. So I think we have to just change a bit our view and having a bigger view on it than just focussing on costs.
Eric?
EB: Not much to say.
Anything to add Franz?
FT: No. As I mentioned already before, we had a regulation change, and a regulation change always will increase the costs. We have not to see how in the future it will come down, on parts or whatever with the costs. The most expensive part currently is the power unit. And once the manufacturers have stopped the research and development work because they have reached a certain level, I expect that these costs will come down, then we have some cost savings on the aerodynamic side and, as Monisha mentioned, that we get a balance with the interest of the people, that we don’t lose people, because that’s very, very important. Formula One has to stay on this very, very high level and then I don’t see any problems for the future.
Q: (Ian Parkes – Press Association) You spoke well at the start about the need to engage with fans and then you touched on what you’re currently doing with regard to that, but I’ve not really heard much so far by way of potential solutions as to what you could do for the future to draw the fans in. Obviously one of the successes in the past was the fans forum – for arguments’ sake – which was run by the now defunct FOTA. Is there a possibility of somebody picking up that baton and running it again across all eleven teams, not just previously the FOTA teams? As I say, I’m looking for potential solutions now as to what you could do rather than what you’re currently doing? To anybody who would like to start off.
TW: You’re right, we need to explore all avenues and all opportunities. We had some pretty good discussions in the last meeting, engaging with the promoters and I think we need to continue to discuss that with the major stakeholders and Mr Montezemolo has started an initiative to put the most important stakeholders on the table and evaluate all these opportunities. I guess besides a fan forum which for sure was a good idea, there are many other possibilities, be it in real life, be it on the internet or the media. We should look at everything.
MM: The digital world is changing every day. Every day there is a new opportunity. Definitely, it is important, as Toto will say, as our president Montezemolo has been saying, we need some kind of workshop, all the stakeholders, sponsors, teams to take time and to come up with a business model or strategy to engage more with the young generation, with a wider audience, which kind of channel to use. You can go to Twitter, to Google, every kind of new media. I don’t think it’s rocket science but you need to do things in a calibrated way because it’s a very competitive arena where you have impressive sports like champions league, NBA or NFL that do a remarkable job so I think that you need not just say OK, let’s embrace new media, you need to have a very clear marketing strategy that is going to make sure that all the stakeholders will have a return on it, so I think it requires time, it’s a serious exercise and I think we started a process. So I’m extremely confident that we started a journey to go in that direction.
EB: There is no magic wand, you know, there are no secrets. You’re obviously going to have to dig it out, you know, so you need to work and as long as we keep the discussion open and we know what we want to achieve we need to adjust to all the actions which is individual actions or around the track as well. As you said, there were some forums organised in the past, maybe it’s going to come up again. It’s just that we obviously need to adjust during this process where we are changing F1 for the future.
Q: (Christian Nimmervoll – Motorsport Total.com) To the representatives of the bigger four teams: the Le Mans 24 hrs last week generated a huge following, probably bigger than in previous years. Is any one of you guys considering a Le Mans programme in the future, or can you imagine to consider it?
TW: Well, you know, for Mercedes it’s a tricky one. Past attempts weren’t really successful. It’s a serious exercise, if you consider the resources which are deployed to be competitive in Le Mans, it is at Formula One level, but nevertheless, as a racer, I must admit it’s an amazing race. I spent three hours in front of the live timing and I couldn’t move away because it was so exciting in the night, detrimental to my family life but very exciting indeed.
CH: How did your wife feel about you looking at live timing in the middle of the night?
TW: She was quite upset with me, actually.
CH: I bet she was.
CH: She was quite upset with me. And, erm… Now you’ve put me off. You’ve derailed me. So no plans to do Le Mans from our side.
CH: I was not looking at the live timing in the middle of the night. It was obviously a great race, exciting race. It shows that different technology can produce close racing. You’ve got a normally aspirated, a diesel engine very similar to what we have here and it was still close racing, so maybe there’s a few things that Formula One can learn from it but I think that Le Mans was an exciting race, it was great to see our old driver, Mark Webber, doing very well. Unfortunate for him, with a couple of hours to go that obviously they ran into difficulties but it’s a different thing. Le Mans is one race, it’s a spectacle, it’s a 24 hour race. Formula One is a totally different kettle of fish, it’s a sprint race that happens 18/19 times a year but of course there’s always things you can learn from other activities.
MM: First of all we were at Le Mans and we won the category with car 51, with a 458 so it was a remarkable achievement. Having said that, it’s good to look at other series, what can be migrated to Formula One but Formula One is 19 races and I believe that it is a worldwide platform so we need to consider that there is a very good base to start from. Having said that, myself, personally and my team, we are 100 percent focused on Formula One. I have to do my job here at the moment so I can’t have this distraction.
EB: So no to your question, but it’s true that Le Mans is a one event in itself. Obviously I’ve passed some years there so I know a little bit how it works and I did show up there on Friday just to have a look but there are a couple of things that we should look at how they run their hybrid energy storage and stuff like this. Maybe there is something we could learn and get into F1 but it’s different racing.
Q: (Silvia Arias – Parabrisas) Talking about Le Mans, there are some rumours that maybe for the next year the races will start with the safety car in front. Would you like something like that, to improve the show or whatever?
MK: Well, not too long ago we’ve had quite a discussion on safety car starts and things like that so I think what we’ve now managed to agree there is the right thing I think. We should focus on what now we have changed for next year and see how that’s going to affect the viewers and the show and then let’s take it from there, so let’s not just start getting wildly into actions and trying to just change because we need to do some action.
Q: (Flavio Vanetti – Corriere della Sera) To Marco Mattiacci: we had an interview by Luca di Montezemolo in the Wall Street Journal, then he dismissed the intention of Ferrari to quit Formula One but in case you don’t see the changes you’d like to see in Formula One, can you consider the possibility to leave this world or not?
MM: I don’t want to work with that perspective. I know that Formula One is about Ferrari, and that Ferrari is about Formula One. I want to work, we will work, the president will work in order to improve and to make sure that we will have a Formula One that will appeal to a wider audience, so at the moment I will not consider the scenario.
Q: (Peter Vamosi – Vas Nepe Kiadoi KFT) To all of you: how do you like Mr Montemolo’s idea of introducing third cars in each team? Do you have a driver for that?
FT: First of all, we currently have eleven teams, 22 cars and as long as these eleven teams stay in Formula One, there’s no reason and no need to bring in a third car.
MK: I agree with Franz. Were there to be a need, it wouldn’t first of all be a good thing for Formula One because obviously then some teams would no longer be there. I think it’s an interesting idea. The idea has always been coming up since a long while and maybe we could even use that to improve the show. I think there could be smart ways to see how you could actually use that car but the least problem I think we’d all have would be with the drivers. I think we all have enough.
EB: First, there is a limitation on the number of cars per race, so obviously if you would go, as Franz said, if you would go three cars per team now, there will be too many cars and that means that some cars would not race. I think the idea to run a third car is… unfortunately, if we had less teams, that could be a means to obviously run enough cars on the grid, but your question about drivers, don’t worry, there are enough around.
TW: Yeah, I agree with what all three have said. At the moment we have eleven teams and hopefully they stay in Formula One but the past has shown, the last 50 years have shown that some teams come, some teams go. Nevertheless, if it falls below a critical level, which we estimate as a critical level, having a third car could be a way of filling up the grid and there could be interesting discussions about promoting that, putting young drivers into the cars and we’ve had many of those discussions and I think you need to have a fallback scenario in case we are really running into difficulties, but our agenda right now needs to be to keep the grid as it is.
CH: Nothing really to add, it’s not relevant at the moment.
MM: We have always been… we are in favour to have a third car, in particular if we understand the opportunity to give this car to a young driver, the other driver for different geography. I think looking to improve the show, I think it could be a great opportunity and we are in favour of this.

It’s my home race and the most-challenging to win: Nico Rosberg

PRESS CONFERENCE
Jules, can I start with you? Obviously it’s been quite a tough start to the season for you. What do you put that down to? Is it adapting to the car, is it bad luck or a combination of those things?
Jules BIANCHI: Yeah, obviously it’s been a very difficult start. The first few races have been pretty tough for me and the team but actually the last one especially was pretty good for me, so I am happy with that. So I will think about this only now and be focused for the next races coming now.
Tell us about your experience and thoughts about this unique race track here in Monaco. You had a good result here back in Renault 3.5 a few years ago, does that junior experience help in the first few years in Formula One?
JB: Yeah it helps a lot for sure to race in Monaco before your first year in Formula One. Last year has been really difficult for me. I had some issues in qualifying, I had engine failure and then in the race again some issue with the engine to start with and a brake failure to finish with, so it was not the best race I could have but I’m pretty confident now that I can do a good race this year.
Coming to you Valtteri, you’re seventh now in the Drivers’ Championship and well ahead of your team-mate. You had another good result in Spain. Do you feel that you and the team have moved up a gear now?
Valtteri BOTTAS: Yeah, since the start of the season everything’s been positive if we compare it to the year before. All the time during this year we’ve been able to make progress, we’ve been bringing some updates, which always gave us a little bit. That’s what we aim for, for that to continue for the whole season. We are definitely keeping up at least with the development. We just need to keep pushing really, because everyone is going to improve so much.
You said in the build-up to this race that you feel confident this year at Monaco. I wonder how much of a handicap it was last year for you that you’d never driven anything around this circuit? Can you tell us a bit what it’s like to drive this place with absolutely zero database when you’re driving a Formula One car.
VB: Yeah, definitely it was really tough last year, first time, immediately with a Formula One car but, you know, you just need to adapt to it, you need to build the speed up step-by-step in the practice and definitely going for the race this season I know the track now well, so it’s much easier to approach the weekend and build from practice one onwards. I definitely feel very confident for this weekend and I really think we can fight as a team for some really good points.
Nico, winner from pole here last year. Can you tell us what a win around this race track means to a Formula One drive, what it did for you personally and for your confidence?
NIco ROSBERG: For me personally it was a very, very special experience, because it’s my home, it’s where I’ve grown up. My whole life has been centred around Monaco. So to win here, yeah it was great. And not only that but also it’s the race to win. It’s the most challenging race to win and the most prestigious race to win, so really that was awesome.
With what happened in Spain, losing the initiative in the championship to your team-mate, how are you feeling at this point, going into this race? Do you feel the strain or do you feel an impatience to get that lead back again?
NR: I’m not too focused on that. Of course I would prefer to be ahead than behind but it’s very, very close and there still a long way to go. So I’m just focused on this weekend here, looking forward to it, because I know that I have a fantastic car at the moment and I expect the car to be very, very quick also here in Monaco. The gap – they might be a lot closer to us this weekend and we need to wait and see if we are the fastest and the chances are we will be, so I look forward it and hope to have a fantastic weekend again.
Jean-Eric, like Jules you’ve had a difficult start to the season. You got four points in the opening round but since then you’ve been in a position to score more points but then you’ve had non-finishes. What’s been going on?
Jean-Eric VERGNE: Yeah I think I’ve been pretty unlucky since the beginning of the season, started well in Melbourne and then always in a position to score some good points. But that’s how it is; it’s part of the sport. I’ll just keep on smiling and hopefully the bad luck will go away and get tired of me. I’m just hoping to finish the race and have a good car and that’s all I’m hoping for. So it will come.
You won here in your junior career I believe and last year this race was the start of a real turnaround in your season. What are your thoughts on the venue, your prospects for the weekend, and also I noted that you said that a driver must arrive in a humble state of mind at the beginning of a weekend in Monaco. What do you mean by that and what happens from there?
J-EV: Well, I think this track is really difficult for sure. You want to stay far away from the walls and at the beginning the walls always look really close, a lot close than in the end of the weekend. This is a particular track where even the first session, the first P1, is really important for the confidence over the whole weekend, so you really have to build up your weekend in a good way.
Q: Romain, coming to you, first points of the season obviously in Spain and also fifth on the grid, followed up by what looked like a very encouraging test for Maldonado and Pic in Barcelona. Can you sum up where Lotus are now and what level of optimism there is for this next phase of the Championship?
Romain GROSJEAN: Well, if you look at the trend from Melbourne, we’ve been improving every time, going to Q3 for the first time in China, going to Q3 and being fifth on the grid in Barcelona. I think we were looking good in the race to keep the Ferrari behind but I had a small problem. It’s good that all the work has been done, and the fact we understand more and more our car, it’s going in the right direction and, of course, if you are fifth on the grid in Monaco, the race is even kind of easier to defend your position. You never know what you are going to get when you come to Monaco. It’s such a specific track. But I do hope we get the same kind of car we had in Barcelona. Then we can be well placed in Q3 and score some more points.
Q: Looking at your record here over the years, Monaco has not been a very happy hunting ground for you, has it? In Formula One or the junior categories. Why is that, do you think?
RG: I think that’s not fair to say. I’ve been on pole position here in GP2, won the race in GP2 – but on the other side if you have a look at crashes, I have a good record and few corners I know too well. To be fair, last year I completely missed my weekend and wherever I would have been, it would have been the same story. So, just try to not do that again. You have to respect the track. Every mistake is more obvious than everywhere else – but I’ve always been quick so I’ll try to keep that in my pocket but stay away from the rails.
Q: Kimi, another Monaco winner, do you consider a win here to be more important than other races? What did you feel when you ticked that Monaco win off your bucket list?
Kimi RÄIKKÖNEN: Obviously it’s been pretty OK many times for me the race but then it’s not always from your side that the things go wrong here. There’s so many things that can affect your result in the end. Previous years haven’t been the most best again but hopefully this year can be a bit better and hopefully we get some good points but obviously it’s too early to say how the car will be. Everything is different from last year so we have to just go open-minded and try to do the best that we can.
Q: Was Spain something of a turning point for you in terms of being able to extract closer to the maximum potential from the Ferrari? What made the difference there for you? And also, can you say anything about your analysis of the strategy in that race afterwards?
KR: We’ve been pretty good in other races also but obviously had some problems in the race or in practice and always messed up the complete big picture a bit. But obviously it was a bit better last time around. To be honest, if we finished where we finished, I think sixth and seventh, it’s not at all where we want to be as a team, so we still have an awful lot of work to do. We improve things little-by-little but the other teams are also going forward so it’s not a simple thing to fix and be in front suddenly. We know how it works and we know how much things have to improve but we keep working hard and for sure one day we will get there.
QUESTIONS FROM THE FLOOR
Q: (Aron Day – FormulaSpy.com) Kimi, you’ve driven the V10s, the V8s around Monaco. Do you think the new cars will be more difficult to drive?
KR: It’s difficult to say before we drive. I think if your car is normally good, it doesn’t really matter where you go. You know how it behaves and it will be OK. Obviously a bit less grip this year and maybe some cars are a bit more hard to handle but we have to see how it goes on the first practice and see what it is. But I think we’ve improved a lot since the winter and it should be OK.
Q: (Paolo Ianieri – Gazzetta dello Sport) Nico, Lewis says he should be dominating you more. Does it mean the time of smiles is getting over slowly? Are we going to see a harder battle between you and him?
NR: I don’t know what he said so I’m not going to… I didn’t hear it myself so I’m not going to comment on such things. But, in general, it’s been a tough battle up until now and I expect it to continue like that. Of course now he’s had the result rhythm in a couple of races but it’s been very close. I just need a tiny bit to turn it around. I’ll start with trying to do that here in Monaco.
Q: (Vladamir Rogovets – SB Belarus Segodnya) To all of you: what is your favourite braking zone in Monaco?
JB: Well, I think after the tunnel, that’s good, I like that.
J-EV: Last corner, there is nearly no braking. I don’t know.
VB: Yeah, I think the tunnel as well, because that’s one of the places it could be possible to overtake, so let’s say that. Yeah.
RG: Casino. It goes quickly up hill and when you get to the top you just have to brake. It’s quite a nice feeling.
NR: Same, up the hill, it’s very very difficult because it’s a very very fast corner and you’re trying to carry the speed in and if you get it wrong and you’re going too fast, it’s very easy to lose the line.
KR: No, I don’t really have one favourite one. Any of them. You can chose
Q: (Heikki Kulta – Turun Sanomat) Kimi, are you going to carry on with the James Hunt-style design of your helmet here?
KR: No.
Q: (Vincent Marre – Sports Zeitung) To all six of you: if there is one day race that we have now in this calendar that you would like to change into a night race, assuming there is no technical issue, which one would it be? There must be one.
VB: This one would be cool, I think. It would look nice.
J-EV: Yeah, I think this one as well under lights.
JB: Same, same thing. It would be really nice to race in Monaco at night.
RG: I don’t know; why not Melbourne?
NR: Japan, so there’s no jetlag.
KR: I cannot hear the question. I understood by their answers but I’m happy how they are, we can always dream about things but we don’t make the rules, so there’s no point.
Q: (Haoran Zhou – Formula One Express) Nico, last year you controlled the race all the way until the last few laps because of the fear of tyre degradation. This year’s tyres have more endurance, and also your car is quite good on tyre management. Are you going to be able to push more in the race, according to your simulation?
NR: Well, last year, before Monaco, it was really really bad, our car with the tyres so in Monaco it was all about just trying to make the tyres last for the race but this year the tyres are more durable and also we have a better control on tyres, as a team, so it should be a faster race if I’m at the front.
Q: (Pierre van Vliet – F1i.com) Nico, four pole positions for Lewis so far; do you plan to change your approach to qualifying? Here, you know that you dominated him last year; what do you plan to maybe change something in qualifying?
NR: No. Of course three of those qualifyings were in the wet; in the dry it’s 1-1 and it’s supposed to be dry on Saturday so I’m confident I can make it happen so I’m not changing my approach or anything.
Q: (Ben Edwards – BBC) Nico and Kimi; we lost a legend of Formula One, Sir Jack Brabham, this last week. Obviously his exploits were before you guys were born but can I just ask if you had any contact with Sir Jack Brabham, if you have any thoughts about his career and also if you’d been born in a different era, would you have ever considered going down that kind of route that he did, of building his own car? Kimi, you’ve set up teams; Nico you have an interest in engineering. If you’d been born in that era, could you have seen yourselves go down that route?
KR: Obviously I read and I was so sad to hear that he had passed away. Obviously these days are different than the days that they used to race and they could do different categories, different races. It would be very nice if they would be able to do different things at the same time and different races and try different things more. But the problem is everything gets so much more expensive these days and obviously people are more scared that you get hurt that they try to limit everything that you do. It’s a shame because I think it would be more fun for everybody and all sports would also benefit from it, and F1. It would be nice to do stuff like they did.
NR: It’s an amazing achievement that he did at the time, to win in another team but also in his own team, in his own car that he built. It’s extremely unlikely to ever happen again but you never know, but it’s a record that is definitely going to last a long time.

Juncadella tests new compounds for Force India despite off-track excursions
Barcelona, 14 May 2014: The second in-season test of the year took place after the Spanish Grand Prix, working on testing structures and compounds for 2015. Sauber and Toro Rosso tested on the first day, with Force India and McLaren taking over throughout day two.
With the first day mostly wet, just the new intermediate compounds were tested in the morning. In the afternoon, with the test timetable having been altered to maximise dry running, some of the prototype slicks for 2015 got their first outing at the Barcelona circuit. The focus on the opening afternoon was on new constructions, with around half the anticipated programme completed.
On the second day, held in dry conditions with trac

An India in F1.Image k temperatures peaking in excess of 40 degrees centigrade, new constructions as well as compounds were tested with McLaren and Force India. McLaren completed the programme with Stoffel Vandoorne, who then went on to set his fastest time of the day on the current 2014 medium tyre, as the team ran some of their own tests, a procedure allowed by the current regulations. Daniel Juncadella tested for Force India, but was not able to finish the anticipated work due to delays and off-track excursions.
Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “With rain affecting the first day of testing, the programme was put slightly out of kilter from the beginning, but this is something that you obviously expect and factor into your plans. It was also a good opportunity to try out some new intermediate weather tyres for next year. Once the weather became drier, we were able to focus on the new 2015 slick tyres. Following the test in Bahrain, we’re now beginning to build up a good picture of where we stand going into next year, so there is plenty of useful data to analyse heading into the next in-season test after Silverstone.”
Testing facts:
The first day of testing saw rain and very low temperatures with a maximum of 11 degrees centigrade air temperature and with track temperatures never going over 20 degrees centigrade.
The fastest time set throughout the two days of the test was a 1m24.871s set by Pastor Maldonado on the supersoft tyres in the closing hour of the second day.
Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne who had a technical problem in the morning of day one only ran a total of 52 laps, whereas Guido Van der Garde in the Sauber managed to run 86 laps. Both were hampered by the bad weather conditions.
Today, Stoffel Vandoorne in his first day ever in a Formula One car, ran an impressive 136 laps on the Pirelli experimental tyres. Daniel Juncadella, in a Sauber, also did well, doing 91 laps.
As well as running on experimental tyres, the teams that were not testing specifically for Pirelli ran with the current tyres. Teams are allowed an overall maximum total of 135 sets of tyres for testing this year, including the in-season tests.
The next in-season test will take place after the British Grand Prix. Ferrari and Lotus will test for Pirelli on the opening day, followed by Red Bull and Marussia on day two. The final in-season test will be held in Abu Dhabi, after the race, where teams will have the first opportunity to sample the brand new 2015 tyre range.
