    Zarco emerges victorious in history-making French GP; 1st Frenchman to win since 1954

    For the first time since 1954, a French MotoGP rider wins on home turf in an unbelievably dramatic Grand Prix at Le Mans
    Le Mans, 11 May 2025: Flippin’ phenomenal. A day Johann Zarco, LCR Honda Castrol and a record-breaking Michelin Grand Prix of France crowd will never forget. For the first time since 1954, 71 years ago, a French MotoGP rider wins on home turf after a wet tyre gamble from Zarco sees the #5 beat second place Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) by nearly 20 seconds. The #93 gains important points in the title chase as both Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) fail to score points on a hugely dramatic Sunday afternoon, which saw Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) claim a debut MotoGP rostrum.

    A RED-FLAGGED START AS RAIN FALLS
    Tensions were at an all-time high in the lead up to lights out as light rain scattered the Le Mans circuit in the build up. Heading onto the warm up lap, with everyone on Michelin’s slick tyres, it was then abundantly clear that was the wrong tyre to be on. Polesitter Quartararo was nearly down at Turn 3 and at the end of the warm up lap, unsurprisingly, every rider peeled into pit lane and that brought out the red flags due to an excessive number of riders at pit lane exit as we then set ourselves for a quick restart procedure at the French GP. The Grand Prix was also reduced by one lap to 26, with a wet race declared – that meant riders could come in and change their bikes at any moment once we got underway.

    And there was more drama at the end of the sighting lap. More than half the grid, including Quartararo, Alex Marquez and Marc Marquez, were in while Bagnaia stayed on the grid.

    LIGHTS OUT AND IMMEDIATE DRAMA
    Eventually we were lights out and underway and as he was in the Sprint, Bagnaia was down at Turn 3 on Lap 1! Meanwhile, Quartararo led from Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez, Aldeguer was fourth as Bagnaia made it back to pit lane to jump onto his dry weather bike. The Italian was miles behind but having pitted at the end of the sighting lap, over half the grid had double Long Lap penalties to take. 

    Quartararo, having led by over a second, was the first of the front runners to dive into the Long Lap loop. Alex Marquez, Aldeguer – who had passed Marc Marquez – and Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech3) were the next to come in, but Marc Marquez didn’t. This happened after Bagnaia had been lapped – a disaster for Pecco, who then came in for dry tyres. A decision that would prove costly again soon after. 

    HOME HEARTBREAK TO ELATION: QUARTARARO CRASHES, ZARCO LEADS
    Then, heartbreak. Quartararo was down at the final corner and so was Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) right behind the Frenchman. Gutting for the 100,000+ crowd, but back on circuit, Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Viñales were back in the pit lane to switch back onto wet tyres.

    Where to look? Marc and Alex were next to come in and that left Aldeguer leading the Grand Prix by over 12 seconds, but now, the rookie was clearly on the wrong tyre – and sure enough, the #54 came in on the next lap.

    Right, where were we? Well, to the delight of the French faithful, Zarco led the French Grand Prix! The #5 had stuck it out on the wet weather tyres and he was leading by seven seconds over Miguel Oliveira (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP), the Portuguese rider had done the same as Zarco, with Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez pressing Oliveira on Lap 9 of 26.

    HOW THE FRENCH GP WAS WON
    The brothers passed a struggling Oliveira with ease and with 17 laps to go, the gap between leader Zarco and the Marquez duo was 8.5s. That grew to nine seconds with 15 laps to go, then it was 9.3s as Zarco churned out low 1:46s, with Marquez near enough matching the home hero. Alex Marquez was losing touch on the #93, but the #73 had a six second buffer to fourth place Acosta.

    With 11 laps to go, Zarco was marching towards an astonishing home Grand Prix victory. The gap had risen to 11.5s, then it was 12.4s as Zarco lapped at least a second quicker than anyone else on track. That trend continued as the advantage rose to over 14 seconds with seven laps as we witnessed two crashes – first Oliveria was down at the final corner, then Alex Marquez crashed at Turn 3. Luckily the former Championship leader remounted, and such were the gaps between a lot of riders, the Spanish GP winner re-joined the Grand Prix in P6. That off promoted Acosta to P3.

    Having got back into the race, Alex Marquez was in the gravel again and unfortunately that was his French GP done. But Gresini’s podium hopes weren’t over because Aldeguer was catching Acosta at a rapid rate of knots. With two laps left, the rookie was right on the back of Acosta and at the front, Zarco’s lead was 19 seconds. The Frenchman simply had to nurse his Honda to the chequered flag.

    Aldeguer did get Acosta but it was all eyes on the #5. One lap left Johann! And he brought it home. The roof was raised at Le Mans because for the first time since 1954, a French MotoGP rider clinched victory on home turf. Unbelievable. What a moment for Zarco, LCR Honda and the record-breaking French GP crowd. 

    Marc Marquez crossed the line 19.9s away from Zarco to collect a massive 20 points, with Aldeguer backing up his Saturday bronze medal with a debut MotoGP podium. What a weekend for the rookie.

    YOUR FRENCH GP POINTS SCORERS
    Acosta had to settle for P4 after he couldn’t live with Aldeguer’s late race pace, as Viñales handed KTM a double top five in France. Honda HRC Test Team’s Takaaki Nakagami took a magnificent P6 in his first wildcard ride for the Japanese factory, as Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) picked up his season best Sunday result in P7.

    Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing) and Ai Ogura (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) rounded out the top 10, with Luca Marini (Honda HRC Castrol), Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3), Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) and Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) closed out the points, with Bagnaia acting as the final finisher in P16.

    Just… wow. Johann Zarco is a winner at home in MotoGP. A Sunday that will go down in history for more reasons than one. Le Mans, you were simply incredible. Again.

    The Frenchman is overhauled by the #93, then the #73… and then Aldeguer as the rookie makes his first rostrum visit in France.

    Le Mans, 10 May 2025: Pure emotion, adrenaline and excitement, the 2025 Michelin® Grand Prix of France still has the Grand Prix race to entertain but Saturday’s stunning on-track action left plenty of goosebumps. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) vs Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team), the fight we wanted to see, the fight we got. The #93 came out on top to become the first rider with six consecutive Sprint wins but the stat itself isn’t the entire story as BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP celebrate a double Saturday podium with Alex Marquez and rookie Fermin Aldeguer coming through to complete the rostrum.

    OPENING STAGES: Quartararo pulls the pin for the home crowd

    Grabbing the holeshot, Marc Marquez got to the fast Turn 2 first but ran wide, allowing home star and polesitter Quartararo to hit the front and launch away in the early stages. It was an early exit for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), as the rider P3 in the standings crashed at Turn 3 on Lap 2, despite a great start up from P6 to P4. Elsewhere, a miserable start for Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing), who ran off into the gravel; he was able to rejoin the action but way out of points contention.

    As Lap 4 ended, there was another crasher, this time Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) at Turn 9; he remounted but entered the pits. Meanwhile, at the start of Lap 6, it was Quartararo still ahead, but Marquez made his first attempt to try and lead the Sprint. He attacked at Turn 3 but ran wide, allowing ‘El Diablo’ to get back through on the cutback. However, he wasn’t as fortunate at Turn 8, with Marc able to squeeze down the inside and not allow any retaliation from the Frenchman.

    MORE BATTLES: Alex Marquez and Aldeguer come to the fore

    At the start of Lap 8 and now heading towards the final third, there was no way for Quartararo to resist the #73 of Alex Marquez, who blasted by on the way up to Turn 2. Now the #20’s attention was moving towards Alex Marquez’s teammate Aldeguer, once again having a sensational weekend in his rookie season. He found a way ahead for P3 at Turn 3 but not willing to relinquish a top three at home, Quartararo struck back at Turn 6 with contact between the two. Not backing down, the #54 responded with equal if not more brutal force, shoving Quartararo back to fourth at Turn 7.

    THE FINAL MOMENTS: Acosta in late drama as Marc makes his mark

    There was a last lap battle between the KTM duo of Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) over P5, with the #12 attacking ‘El Tiburon’ into Turn 3 but unable to make it work. Then, the unthinkable on the final lap at Turn 13, as Acosta fell all of his own accord, denying himself of a first top five in the Sprints this season.

    Out front, it was dreamland for Marc, who became the first rider to win six consecutive Sprints, retaking the Championship lead from his brother by two points, with Alex taking second as the brothers once again locked out the top two places. In third, a mighty first Sprint rostrum for Aldeguer, who was one of the fastest riders in the closing stages, so keep an eye out for him in the Grand Prix. Quartararo was a determined fourth, whilst Viñales completed the top five courtesy of Acosta’s last fall.

    Sixth place gave another reason for the home crowd to cheer as Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) came through from P11, pipping Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), who likewise climbed the order from P17 to P7. Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) grabbed his first Sprint points since COTA in 2023. The last point went to Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol), denying Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) who rounded out the top ten. Find full results HERE!

    Martin vs Marquez vs Bagnaia; Martin wins last-lap decider at Le Mans: MotoGP

    Three of the biggest names in the sport throw down in France – and this time it’s Martin who writes a victory to remember.

    Le Mans (France), 11 May 2024: Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) soaked up the pressure and threw down the gauntlet at the Michelin® Grand Prix de France, coming out on top in a three-way fight for glory against Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) that rolled all the way to the final lap. Nearly 300,000 fans streamed into the event over the weekend and they were treated to a proper show as the #89 shadowed Bagnaia, passed him, and then shut every door in Le Mans to pull off a seriously impressive 25-point haul. And just behind him, Marc Marquez did find an open door – or manage to create one. The #93 pulled a last lap divebomb on Bagnaia that got the job done for second, perfectly crafted to demote the reigning Champion to third.

    Off the line, Martin made a good start from pole but Bagnaia bettered it, the #1 taking the holeshot from second on the grid. Behind, Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) was threatening but ran in hot at the chicane, leaving teammate Aleix Espargaro to challenge Martin for second on the exit as the #12 Aprilia slotted in just behind Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) in fourth. Marc Marquez, meanwhile, was up to eighth almost immediately, slicing up from his P13 grid slot.

    At the front, Bagnaia had the hammer down but Martin was absolutely glued to him at the front. The two pulled a small gap on the chasing pack led by Espargaro, with Diggia in fourth and rookie Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) looking to attack Viñales. He did so not long after, setting the fastest lap on Lap 2, before another shuffle as DiGiannantonio briefly diced with Espargaro just ahead.

    However, the rookie then proved the protagonist of the first drama. Looking for a way through on that duel ahead, he overcooked it into Turn 8 going for a move on the VR46 machine ahead, and then only just avoided tagging both as he slid out. More drama then hit nearly immediately after as Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) slid out as he pushed to try and duel with Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team).

    At the front, Bagnaia pounded on. Martin shadowed, equally pitch perfect until one small mistake from both with 19 to go, heading ever so slightly wide. But they gathered it back up as the podium fight behind started to light up, the race split between a duel and a melee.

    Diggia was homing in on Espargaro, but Viñales, Marquez and Bastianini lurked. The next move came there as Marquez attacked Viñales but was repelled, and Diggia then had a shot at the #41 Aprilia, also forced to hold station. But a lap later the #49 was through into third, and Viñales then began to line up his teammate. He needed no second invite after the door was just left open, with Marquez then striking straight away too.

    Next was Bastianini. The Beast came from a long way back and also went in hot, gathering it back up but Espargaro then taking to the run off before rejoining. Bastianini didn’t make the apex either, but his was a shortcut and he was then given a Long Lap for the time not lost.

    Meanwhile, Marquez had picked Viñales’ pocket after the #12 was slightly wide, and the eight-time World Champion was homing in on Diggia. By Lap 16, the #93 made his first attack through Turn 3. The Italian responded and in the shuffle, Viñales almost nearly made his way through too. But it was as you were until a lap later as Marquez went for it again, and this time Diggia ran wide trying to take it back. The #93 and Viñales were both past, and the #49 then got a Long Lap for the time he didn’t lose as he tried to rejoin.

    By just under ten laps to go, Bagnaia led Martin, the two still absolutely glued together, but now it was Marquez on the chase. Soon, the chess match had its first big move.

    At Turn 3, Martin attacked. And he got through, but on the cutback Bagnaia judged it to the absolutely millimetre to nudge back ahead. As you were, until a lap later. Same move, different result as this time the #89 was able to hold it. There was a new race leader, but there was also a new fastest lap… from Marquez.

    The Gresini was on the factory machine of Bagnaia in what seemed like a flash as it became a leading trio. It seemd Martin was starting to pull out the centimetres as he dug in, but then the #89 was deep into the chicane with three to go, and it was absolutely locked together once again. Bagnaia was close as anything and showed a wheel but couldn’t barge the door open, leaving a six-wheeled fight for the win to roll on.

    Over the line for the last lap, Martin and Bagnaia were almost one machine round Turn 1 and 2, but a hail Mary on the brakes from Marquez saw that #93 re-appear in the shot by the time the trio dropped anchor at the chicane. Bagnaia was harrying, impatient and looking for any inch of space to make a move on Martin, but there was none – so Marquez made some instead. 

    The Gresini divebombed it but divebombed it to perfection, getting it stopped to take over in second as the remaining apexes ticked down. Would Bagnaia be able to respond at the final corner? As Martin gained some breathing space thanks to the duel behind him, the focus shifted to that one final opportunity. But if Marquez had opened the door for himself corners prior, this time he kept it firmly closed. 

    Up ahead, Martin crossed the line to take one of his most impressive wins to date, soaking up the pressure and making it a serious statement Sunday. His lead goes out to an incredible 38 points – enough to guarantee he leaves the next GP as Championship leader too – and it’s Bagnaia and Marquez on his tail in that order. Marquez’ back-to-back podiums are his first since 2021 and he’s 40 points off the top, but Bagnaia remains second despite that 0 from the Sprint in France.

    Behind the podium battle, Bastianini charged back from his Long Lap to get past Viñales late on, with the #12 forced to settle for fifth. Di Giannantonio took P6 ahead of Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing), who pipped Espargaro late on and the Aprilia dropped back to P9. 

    Between the two was Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), whose tough French GP had a much sweeter conclusion on Sunday. From the back of the grid, the #33 charged through to P8. An honourable mention also goes to a savage ride from Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) in an awesome home GP livery, with the Frenchman making it as far up as sixth before a crash out of contention. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) completed the top ten.

    That’s a wrap on the best-attended Grand Prix in history, and Martin leaves it with a serious and stylish statement win.     The Championship twists again after bad luck for Bagnaia and a stunner for his fellow frontrunners in France

    Le Mans (France), 11 May 2024: Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) bounced back from Jerez in style at the Michelin® Grand Prix de France, getting an incredible launch from pole to take off and escape to his 12th Tissot Sprint win. Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) pulled off an awesome comeback to thread through to second from P13 on the grid, with Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) completing the Sprint podium. Where was reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team)? Read on…

    It was a stunning start from Martin to take the holeshot, and the exact opposite for Bagnaia as he plummeted from second to mid-pack, seemingly with some sort of issue. Meanwhile some friendly-fire – within the limit – between the Aprilias added another shuffle, and with that it was Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) slotting into second on the chase behind Martin.

    Meanwhile, as Bagnaia went backwards, Marc Marquez was storming forwards. The number 93 threaded the needle to perfection off the start and was into fifth within a few corners. Within a few laps, he was the rider on the chase behind the Martin-Bezzecchi duel at the front.

    Aleix Espargaro was then the next to drop out of that front battle as his start proved too good to be true, given a double Long Lap for the jump start. The drama then amped up again for Bagnaia just behind that, as he ran wide from the back of the field. Something was definitely wrong for the #1 as he then headed into pitlane. The reigning Champion was out of the Sprint.

    That left Martin leading Bezzecchi leading Marquez, with Viñales next up. A gaggle of Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team), Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Tech3), Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) had the gloves off too, and Espargaro then rejoined in their midst.

    Suddenly, there was more drama at the front. Yellow flashed across the run off at Turn 9 as Bezzecchi slid out from that second place, leaving Marquez on the chase behind Martin. The gap between the two was now at over two seconds, however, and the clock was counting down. The Sprint King was on his way to another Saturday stunner, and he got the job done in style to capitalise on a tough Sprint for Bagnaia.

    Behind Martin’s impressive charge at the front, Marquez took second after an awesome comeback ride from P13 on the grid, with Viñales holding onto third in the last laps as Bastianini put in a late charge for glory. The ‘Beast’ had to settle for fourth. 

    Espargaro recovered from his double Long Lap to finish fifth, with Acosta taking a solid sixth and putting in a final corner save. Di Giannantonio held off Miller for seventh, with Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Racing) taking the final point on Saturday… just marginally ahead of home hero Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™).

    Another 27 laps await the grid on Sunday, with Bagnaia now the rider looking to hit back, Martin needing another showstopper to keep that ground gained, and Marquez looking down the barrel of the start from P13 once again.     Martin outpaces Pecco with new lap record as Marquez faces Q1: MotoGP

    The stage is set for another super Saturday with key names split across Q1 and Q2 – and a home hero through

    Le Mans (France), 10 May 2024: It was an intense shootout for direct entry into Q2 at the Michelin® Grand Prix de France, with the spots in the top 10 going down to the wire. At the end of Friday it was tight at the top too, with just 0.187s separating the top three. Thanks to a new lap record, however, Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) reigns supreme ahead of 2023 duelling partner Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), with rookie Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) making a statement in third and on team home turf.

    For Martin it was a building session, with the #89 consistently running inside the top 10 before a fast lap with 10 minutes to go before improving to set a remarkable 1:30.388 on the Pramac rider’s final run. Bagnaia tried to fight back late, after briefly occupying the top spot with 20 minutes to go. However, Martin’s final sector was too good to match, leaving the reigning World Champion in second with Acosta finding time in the last 10 minutes of the the day to jump to third on the #31’s first time at Le Mans on a MotoGP™ bike.

    In fourth after another cracking day was Aprilia Racing’s Maverick Viñales, who was a mere 0.269s from the top spot at the end of the opening day of action at the French GP. The Americas GP winner was ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing) in sixth who had a positive Friday after putting a fresh soft rear tyre in his final run.

    Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was sixth after a strong finish to the day – setting a 1:30.699. However, it was not smooth sailing for Miller after saving a crash after running through the gravel at turn two. However at the other side of the box, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) had a tough day crashing for the third time on Friday, ending the day outside of the Q2 spots.

    Aleix Espargaro ended a strong day for the Aprilia Racing squad, finishing the day in seventh, after briefly claiming the top spot. Behind Espargaro in eighth position after a great day was Prima Pramac Racing’s Franco Morbidelli who earned direct entry into Q2 onnce again after finding late time late in the session.

    2023 winner Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing) was ninth clinching a Q2 spot and just 0.397 away from the top spot in the highly competitive field. And to the delight of the French crowd, home hero Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) took the final spot inside the top 10 and by 0.010s, leaving some huge names to battle in Q1.

    Most notably Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) is now forced to go through Q1 on Saturday after ending the day in 13th. The #93 had a crash in the opening stage of the session, remounting, and then began to push in the last 10 minutes but he was unable to piece together a lap good enough for the top 10. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) will join him in Q1 tomorrow, after spending most of Practice outside the top 10 and crossing the line to end the day in 19th.

    Binder and Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) will also prepare for a Q1 appearance on Saturday, hoping to join their teammates in Q2. Further down the order, the French crowd will also be cheering on Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR), who was 20th with work to do to improve.

    Garcia grabs top honours from Lopez on Friday

    It was an exciting Friday afternoon in Moto2™ with many key contenders beginning to show their cards at the Michelin® Grand Prix de France. It continues to be one of the most unpredictable Moto2™ seasons yet, but Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) hit back to end Friday on top, claiming a new lap record at Le Mans with a 1:35.473 in the last five minutes of the session. Alonso Lopez (Folladore SpeedUp) was second despite losing the front at the end of the session while on a fast lap, rider ok, and third went the way of his teammate Fermin Aldeguer, who found time on a last fast lap to rocket up the order.

    Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) was fourth as he looks to fight for a maiden win this weekend, with Championship leader Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing) completing the top five.

    Alonso obliterates the lap record to pull half a second on Esteban, Holgado

    It was a quick afternoon for the Moto3™ field at the Michelin® Grand Prix de France with CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team’s David Alonso continuing to mark his ground in Le Mans. The Colombian smashed the lap record for the second time on Friday, setting a remarkable 1:40.470. The #80 was ahead of teammate Joel Esteban (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team), who was the only other rider inside the 1:40 bracket – but 0.480s adrift from Alonso. In third place after briefly snatching the top spot with 10 minutes remaining was Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) – continuing to look like a race contender.

    It was a dramatic session throughout with riders pushing to the absolute limit as the top spot changed hands multiple times between Alonso, Esteban, and Holgado. There were also a number of crashers, riders ok.

    Meanwhile, returning to racing this weekend was Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo), ending Friday in fourth but a mere 0.014s faster than Jerez winner Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP), who rounded out the top five despite suffering a crash in the closing stages of the session at turn 13.

    DRIVER GROUP 1 – Valtteri BOTTAS (Alfa Romeo), Fernando ALONSO (Aston Martin), Charles LECLERC (Ferrari), Oscar PIASTRI (McLaren), Alex ALBON (Williams)

    Q: Oscar, why don’t we start with you? Let’s throw it back to Spain. You said on Sunday night that it had been a dose of reality for the team. After a competitive Saturday, do you now understand why you struggled so much in the race?

    Oscar PIASTRI: Yeah, I think so. I think even before the race happened, or at the race, we knew what our limitations were going to be. And yeah, Sunday proved to be correct in what we thought would happen. So yeah, I think we understand where we need to work and where we need to improve, and now it’s just about delivering on that.

    Q: Now, talking of work, you have been busy since that race, testing in Hungary last week. How was that?

    OP: It was nice. Another day in an F1 car is always a good day.

    Q: And how different did it feel in an F1 car compared to an F2 car?

    OP: Well, I haven’t been to Budapest in an F2 car either. It had been a while since I’d been there. But no, cool track in an F1 car, especially with a lot of high-speed corners to really feel the limits of an F1 car. So yeah, it was a fun day out.

    Q: Bring it onto this weekend then, your first Canadian Grand Prix. It’s a tricky track, this one. Tell us about the preparations on the sim? 

    OP: Yeah, I think pretty normal, to be honest, nothing too much more. I’ve played the track when I was growing up on the F1 video games. So yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It looks cool. It looks quite bumpy and a bit dusty. And obviously a lot of weather hanging around. So we’ll see how it goes. But I’m looking forward to getting out there.

    Q: Final one for me. For cricket fans out there, The Ashes start tomorrow in the UK. England against Australia. Very quickly: are you looking forward to having a good beating by the Poms?

    OP: I was going to say the exact same thing back. No, looking forward to it, should be good. I’ll try and watch it where I can obviously. It’s a bit of a shame all the F1 races clash with all the games, but I’m looking forward to seeing Australia smash you guys.

    Q: It’s going to be good. And good luck this weekend. Charles, coming to you now. Before we talk Formula 1, can we just throw it back to last weekend? You were at Le Mans for a historic victory for Ferrari at the 24 hours. Just tell us about the weekend, and whether you ever see yourself driving in that race? 

    Charles LECLERC: I’ve said it many times now, I think it’s an incredible race and of course I would love to participate one day. I don’t know when, but I would love to. It was incredible. It was the first time for me attending the race. Obviously, it couldn’t have ended up better, with Ferrari winning. But just the whole event is crazy. By night, the first six hours were crazy with the weather too, and rain, no rain. So it was very, very exciting. And I think the last time I went to see a race as a spectator was a very, very long time ago, too. So it was good. 

    Q: Did you stay up all night? 

    CL: Until 4.30 in the morning, I slept like four hours. So it was okay.

    Q: Wow, that’s commitment. Fernando, do you think he should do it?

    Fernando ALONSO: Yes, why not?

    Q: It’d be good. Let’s bring it back to Formula 1. What can we expect from you and Ferrari this weekend, because you’re coming off the back of a difficult weekend in Spain? 

    CL: Yeah, it was a very difficult weekend for me especially. On this track we don’t have anything new, so I don’t think we’ll have any miracles, but we need to just try and maximise our package, understand more this package, the way we should set up the car in order to maximise it, as in Spain we were quite easily off the window and then we were losing quite a lot of performance. So we’ve learnt a lot. And I’m pretty sure we’ll be in a better place for this weekend. But I don’t think it will be a huge step forward.

    Q: When you got the car back to Maranello, did you discover a problem from Saturday?

    CL: No, no, we didn’t.

    Q: No issue, OK. What about this weekend then? Great race last year from the back to fifth. I know you’ve got nothing new but what are you hoping for?

    CL: Well, last year we were in a very different situation and again, I think we expect Aston Martin to be very strong this weekend. We expect Red Bull to be very strong this weekend. We struggle to understand exactly where Mercedes will be compared to us. But again, we have to focus on ourselves and try to maximise our package. It’s a very challenging track, with the weather, also, we don’t really know which side it is going to go. So yeah, we’ll just focus on ourselves and see what we can do.

    Q: All right. Best of luck. Fernando, coming to you now. So Ferrari think Aston Martin are going to be strong this weekend. What do you think?

    FA: Let’s see, I think it should be a good weekend. But you never know until you hit the track. We also had expectations in Barcelona and we didn’t perform in that race. So yeah, let’s see. We have a couple of new parts in the car as well for this race, so depending on the weather, we will try to test them and validate them. And yeah, hopefully we can be a little bit more competitive than Barcelona.

    Q: What are you expecting from the upgrades?

    FA: Always trying to improve a little bit. Our car has been a completely new project for Aston Martin, a completely new philosophy, a new concept of how the car worked. And, yeah, we’ve been discovering things at every race this year. And I think it’s an optimisation of the package, what we try to do, and we’ve been constantly bringing new parts to the races and this is another step forward and more to come in the future.

    Q: Lawrence Stroll said this week that he’d like to see both of his cars on the podium here. How likely is that?

    FA: You never know. But it is an aggressive target for the weekend. But we know Lawrence, you know, the ambition of him is super high, always. And we will try to make him happy and proud in the home Grand Prix.

    Q: Fernando, you’ve won this race before. You started on the front row last year. What is the secret of success here at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve? 

    FA: I think you need to have, obviously, confidence in the car. It’s a semi-street circuit, so you get very close to the walls and you need to ride the kerbs as well. Very aggressive, very bumpy circuit. Weather normally plays a big factor here, as it will do again this weekend. And get some experience, it’s always good. It’s the 17th or 18th Canadian Grand Prix, so it always helps.

    Q: All right, best of luck. Thank you, Fernando. Alex, coming to you now. Now, you said in Spain that the Barcelona track layout left Williams exposed. What do you think about this weekend?

    Alex ALBON: I kind of like these kinds of circuits. I do feel there’s a little bit more in terms of the ride. Maybe not so much just pure downforce on the car. There’s a bit more to it. The weather… So, we’ve got some upgrades coming this weekend, hopefully, in some ways we want it to be dry just to see what they do. But as I said, it does seem like a bit more of a characterful track than Barcelona.

    Q: What are you expecting from the upgrades? Have you driven them on the simulator?

    AA: Yeah, we’ve been pretty hard at work the last couple of weeks. You know, nothing too big actually, balance-wise. It feels quite similar. It’s more just a general downforce difference. We’ve done a good job. I do think it’s going to put us more into the fight with the midfield. Something which we’ve been falling away a little bit from the last few races, so hopefully you can just get us back into the fighting area for points.

    Q: All right. Best of luck with that. Thank you, Alex. Valtteri, thank you for waiting. Before we talk on track a question regarding off track, because James Key is going to be joining Alfa Romeo as technical director in September. Can we get your reaction to that news, please?

    Valtteri BOTTAS: I think James is obviously very welcome to the team. He’s got lots of experience from different teams before, been in different situations. So yeah, I think he’s going to be a good addition for us and looking forward to starting to work with him.

    Q: And in terms of facilities, does Alfa Romeo/Sauber have everything it needs in Hinwil? Is it just a question of brainpower now? 

    VB: The basic things are there. There’s always room for improvements and you could always get the latest machinery for every single department. So I think there’s still work going on to see where to invest, when to invest, because there’s a clear long-term plan. But then in the end, it’s also about human power, like you said, so we’re getting there step by step, but it is a project.

    Q: Alright, and what can we expect from you and Alfa Romeo this weekend? You have four podiums at this track. Great drive to P7 as well last year. What about 2023?

    VB: Hopefully points. I think that’s a realistic target. We had a car in Barcelona to be in the top 10. So let’s see how we go here. Very different track, but we try the best and we’re here to fight for points.

    QUESTIONS FROM THE FLOOR

    Q: (David Croft – Sky Sports F1) It’s a question for you Charles. I could see the disappointment on your face when you told Tom that you couldn’t find a cause of the issues on Saturday in Barcelona. If only you could run in Baku every single week, your season will be a lot better than it has been. How worried are you about Ferrari’s form, about the way the season is progressing, and the fact that you couldn’t find an issue to something that was clearly a problem for you on Saturday in Spain?

    CL: I mean, overall, I think all the team is not satisfied with the performance we are showing at the moment on track. And it’s very far off our expectations at the beginning of the season. And yes, we are very clear with ourselves and it’s very clear for us. Then, qualifying in Barcelona was a very particular one. I think I wasn’t the only one to struggle, and we need to understand these things. And for now, we don’t have the reason. So this is a little bit more worrying, and that’s where we need to push and try to understand the reason for it. Because obviously, the feeling was really bad. And then, looking ahead, we just need to keep pushing, trying to bring upgrades as quickly as possible and regularly, which is our aim now, to try to close the gap with the guys in front and also to close the gap, especially in terms of race pace. Because even though I struggled a lot in Qualifying on the Saturday, the Sunday wasn’t great either. And if we look, Carlos, who had a great weekend, he had a great Saturday, but then on Sunday, we struggled again with a race pace. So that’s where we are trying to, to push at the moment. What gives me confidence, though, is that there’s a clear direction in where we want to work and improve and this is what makes me believe in the project.

    Q: (Filip Cleeren – Motorsport.com) Fernando, when you started in Formula 1, the cars were over 200 kilograms lighter than they are today. And now there are discussions to try and bring that weight down again. Just in your experience, how much would that improve the show? How much more enjoyable would it be to drive as well?

    FA: I don’t think it would change much the show. I think it’s more the size of the cars than the weight of the cars, which makes things a little bit more difficult, overtakings, fights into the first couple of corners in the race, it is difficult now to position the car, just because the size of it, not because the weight of the car. So I think it’s going to be difficult to really reduce, significantly, the weight of course, as the hybrid engines, they will always be heavier than the normal engines and the safety on these cars is a lot higher as well. So I know there is some interest in going into that direction. Let’s see what they can do. It will be always welcome and it’s always more fun to drive light cars, but at the end of the day, I think it’s more the size of them that makes racing a little bit more difficult.

    Q: (Luke Smith – The Athletic) Another one for Fernando, you seem quite bullish about Aston Martin’s chances going into this weekend. Canada does have a history for surprise winners, be it due to weather or groundhogs even, getting in the way of cars. Do you see this as being your best chance to get that 33rd win that everyone’s hyping up?

    FA: No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. I think it was more the reaction after Barcelona, knowing that probably was more a one-off, that we were uncompetitive, than being in Canada, you know, our best chance. I think we will be, hopefully, on a very competitive position all throughout the year, and maybe only Barcelona being a little bit out of pace. So that’s the hope. But I don’t think that we point at one weekend, here in Canada or any other has the biggest chance of winning, Probably Monaco was, to be honest, in our calendar, our best chance and we were very close: only 40 or 50 milliseconds off pole position, and then in the race, obviously the chance with the weather coming at the end. So, let’s see when we have another opportunity.

    Q: (Adam Cooper – motorsport.com) Question for Charles. You drove the 2024 no-blanket tyres in Barcelona last week. How did that test go? Are they raceable? The FIA has to make a decision in about six weeks on whether the ban goes ahead next year. Would you be happy if we had no blankets?

    CL: Oh, it’s… I think it’s too early and I don’t have all the answers for now. I have to say that in the conditions that I had during the test, it was good, and it went well. But yeah, in lower temperatures, I don’t know. I haven’t tested these tyres in lower temperatures and that’s where the big question mark is. So, very difficult to answer whether I will be happy to go. I would like to maybe test those tyres in different conditions and then see whether they are raceable in all conditions. But again, it was a positive test with the conditions that we’ve had in Barcelona.

    Q: Charles, can I just ask you to elaborate on that? What does the car feel like on the first lap out of the pits?

    CL: Well, you’ve got four or five corners where it’s very tricky. Where the tyres need to get into temperature. When you are alone on track it is not that much of a problem. But of course, if you are racing other cars, then it becomes very, very difficult to manage. If it remains four or five corners, even in low conditions, then it’s something that we could consider. But obviously with very low conditions, I expect this to be much longer, this warm-up period, and this then could become difficult.

    Q: Fernando, can I bring you in on this? Because your experience in IndyCar, of course no tyre warmers there? What are your thoughts?

    FA: Well, I think it depends on the tyre energy that you put on that specific circuit. Barcelona will help the tyres, some others, it will make things very difficult. Indy, I think you put a lot of energy in the tyres immediately and it was fine. At places like Monaco, or some others… I’m not a big fan of removing the blankets, to be honest, and I don’t see the reason why.

    Q: (Chris Medland – Racer) Question for Alex. Sorry, to throw it forward a little bit – but your home race at Silverstone in a few weeks’ time. What are your hopes for Williams at that one? Especially with the upgraded car? Do you hope to be a bit more competitive there, and is it a special weekend for you when you race in front of such a big crowd like that?

    AA: Silverstone I think is one of everyone’s favourite circuits. Like you said, I think it’s a bit more representative to see where our package comes out. We’ve still got Austria before then if I’ve got my calendar, right. But no, it will be good. I think it’s also Williams’… well, it was supposed to be their 800th – but it will be 799 with Imola, unfortunately, but it will still be a good race and hopefully we can put on a good show. It’s always good to go to Silverstone.

    Q: (Simon-Olivier Lorange – La Presse) The question is going to be for Fernando. I guess it’s not going to be a surprise to get a question about your team-mate in his hometown here. From your point of view, from what you saw from him, from your relationship with him this season. What do you think must improve, or what is missing in him to not only be a good driver but maybe become a star in the sport?

    FA: Yeah, I know Lance from 2012. Actually, I met him here in one of the Ferrari events, when he was in the Academy. I think Lance is showing the speed in the car, the commitment, we saw at the beginning of the year as well, racing with a broken hand and things like that. You only see when you really have passion for something that you’re doing. And I think, for him, the most important thing now is to get the consistency, weekend after weekend. I think we saw many times in the past, sparks of Lance, in wet qualifying, in races, at the starts, lap one performance, these kinds of things that are outstanding. And then, some other weekends that the result was not coming or you get in a bad loop in Qualifying, so something like that, and then the weekend is a little bit compromised. So, I think that consistency is going to be the next step in his career, to be constantly fighting for the top five and then at the end of the year, you see the amount of points that you gain when you get all the weekends right. But as I said, with the motivation, the commitment that he has, and the team that Aston Martin is building now, I think it’s a matter of time that this will come.

    Q: (Matt Coch – Speedcafe.com) One for Oscar. Looking a little bit forward, the B-spec car isn’t too far away. How much do you know about that? Have you driven it in the simulator? And, I guess, what are you expecting if you have driven the simulator? What is it? What does it feel like? Is it much different? 

    OP: I haven’t driven in the simulator yet. So I’m not sure. Hopefully, it’s faster. That’s obviously the plan. I think we’re positive and optimistic about the new package we’ve got coming for Austria and Silverstone. We’ll have to wait and see but I’m looking forward to firstly driving it in the sim when I have the chance and then obviously on the real track too.

    Q: (Luke Smith – The Athletic) Charles, about Le Mans and your visit. You’ve said, obviously before, that you’d like to do the race one day, but did going they’re really sort of solidify that for you? Was there anything that really surprised you about the race, that made you be like: I need to do this in the future. And is it something you see post-F1, or could you maybe do it during your F1 career? 

    CL: I mean, with more and more races in Formula 1, it starts to become more and more difficult, I think, to fit another race, in another category where you need to do testing, etc. So, if the calendar lets me do it, why not? But at the moment, it looks difficult. Then, I don’t know, not much surprise me. I think I kind of expected all of what I’ve seen, at least in the way the team is working. But the excitement around the race in itself was incredible to see. I’ve never seen so many people on a racetrack before. And it’s a very long track and wherever you go, you see lots and lots of people, and very passionate about racing and you know that it’s not the first race they are watching: they’ve been watching for years. It’s good to see so many passionate people at the same event, and on that I was surprised, yes.

    Q: Can I bring you in on this Oscar? Do you fancy Le Mans?

    OP: You asked me about Indy last time! Yes, I think a similar answer to what Charles said. Obviously, with more and more races in the calendar, becomes difficult. Obviously, I’m only seven races into my F1 career, so maybe give it some more time. But it looks like an exciting race. But yeah, not for a while.

    Q: Fernando, are you going to go back again?

    FA:  I may go, yeah.

    Q: Could you do it as part of a Formula 1 season? Or do you think it needs to be a separate programme?

    FA: No, you can. I did the endurance world championship and Formula One World Championship. I think both Championships, so why not one race only?

    Q: As the calendar gets longer in Formula One, still possible?

    FA: I did in 2018, and it was very long already.

    Q: Alex, how about you?

    AA: I would love to, yeah.  I’m not sure. Maybe post-F1, or even during but it’s exciting. I think the racing was really good. I don’t know if the other drivers watched it but it was quite cool to follow along. And I like this whole new LMP style, lot of manufacturers coming into it.

    Q: How many hours did you watch last weekend?

    AA: I didn’t have the official channel, so I was just going on some dodgy livestream! It was intermittent, coming on and off all the time, so total, maybe three hours.

    Q: Valtteri. How about you, Le Mans?

    VB: Why not one day? I? I feel like Charles: it is tricky with the commitments we have in Formula 1. It’s only the races, it’s the other as well. So, time-wise, challenging. So, I’ll probably say post-F1, could be something. 

    Q: I think we might see you at Bathurst before we see you in Le Mans, right?

    VB: That’s very likely.

    Q: (Scott Mitchell-Malm – The Race) It’s a question for Charles, sorry, for your earlier answer covered this already but just on the issue that you felt in Barcelona in Qualifying, and what you say about there not being anything obvious wrong with the car, or mechanically wrong with the car afterwards? What, based on the analysis then, why did it manifest itself in the feeling that it did? Why could you feel it? Or did it feel like it was worse through some types of corners than others? Because you’re not the kind of driver to sort of suffer in those conditions without a good reason.

    CL: Yeah, well, to be honest, it is the first time that it happened in my career. I mean, if I look on the left-hand corners, that’s where I was struggling. I said it straightaway after Qualifying, and we can see that on data clearly. I’m losing some six-and-a-half or seven-tenths in all the left-hand corner – but there are no real reasons for it yet. So yeah, for now, I cannot say much more, to be honest.

    Q: (Chris Medland – Racer) One for everyone, just following up on the Le Mans chat. Valtteri mentioned about how there are other commitments around Formula 1 that make it hard to do stuff, in season. Do you think, as drivers, you’d benefit from having a bit more freedom to race other things, gain other experiences – or do you think that being fully tied into F1, even if it isn’t driving, is the only way to go? 

    VB: I feel like it’s quite individual as a driver. But for me, doing other things sometimes, I feel a benefit. You know, you get another point of view of driving. For example, I’ve done a few rallies over the last few years, some test days for it as well. Just the timing needs to be correct. So yeah, I feel like when you drive something else, you can always unlock and discover something. Especially in the winter-time, it kind of keeps you sharp if you do something else.

    AA: Yeah, I think the same as Valtteri. Everyone’s individual, but the way I see it is a little bit like… I did DTM, for example. Very different cars, and maybe not the most fun cars to drive but you learn such a different way to drive quickly. Every car has a different style and if you just drive Formula 1 all the time, I think you get fixed on one kind of style. Call it like reading a book: kind of extend your vocabulary, but it’s more like you’re racing vocabulary: you get a better appreciation for how to be on the limit and how to be quick in all different kinds of things.

    FA: Yeah, I agree. You know my opinion: the more you race, the more you drive, the better you are.  Instead of being in a restaurant or on a beach, or on an event or premier or whatever. If you are behind a wheel, that will be to your advantage at one point in your career: at one point in a corner or race start, or something. It will always be something that you put in your hard disk.

    CL: Yeah, I think I will take it more as a challenge. I don’t know how much we can take from endurance driving to Formula 1 as it’s very, very different. As Fernando says, it always helps to be behind the wheel but yeah, before I was saying that it was going to be difficult, mostly because outside of the races, we also have quite a lot of events and things going on with Ferrari. So not much free time, and the free time that we have, when we have two or three days, obviously Le Mans is a very tiring race: when I saw the drivers at the end of the race, they were really, really tired: not much sleep and a lot of driving. So it’s nice, I would love to do it one day, but you also need to think about the whole season and Formula 1 is obviously the main priority for now.

    OP: Yeah, I think driving anything can be useful. I say that: I’ve never actually driven a race car with a roof on it before! So, I don’t know, maybe it’ll be a summer activity for me! I think you can look at it from both ways. Obviously F1 is a very different car from anything else. And there’s quite a lot of specifics. But at the same time, you can, as Alex and Fernando were saying, you can learn different things that can help you in situations where you might not expect so yeah, I think it can be useful, but like we’ve all said, there’s not much time to do it these days.

    DRIVER GROUP 2 – Yuki TSUNODA (AlphaTauri), Pierre GASLY (Alpine), Kevin MAGNUSSEN (Haas), Lewis HAMILTON (Mercedes), Sergio PÉREZ (Red Bull)

    Q: Lewis, why don’t we start with you, if we could. Seven wins here in Canada, you have a phenomenal record. And of course, one of those wins was your first one in Formula 1 back in 2007. What is it about this place?

    Lewis HAMILTON: Good afternoon, everyone. I don’t know. I think it’s one of the drivers’ favourite circuits, I think, for sure. It’s the city, it’s the energy. I was asking one of the Canadians recently if the city is the same when we’re not here. But the energy is always great. Got a great and amazing crowd since the beginning. And the track, you’ve got these long, long straights, but it’s a bit like a go-kart track in how you have to throw the car over the kerbs. It’s just always gelled well with me. It’s a big, big braking circuit and that’s always been my strength since I was younger.

    Q: I was just going to say: does it suit your style? 

    LH: Clearly!

    Q: The record speaks for itself! And how much confidence do you have coming into this weekend after what was a really encouraging race in Spain? 

    LH: Yeah, definitely a lot, that we’ve been making progress and the car, last race, we’ve all been buzzing, I think, back at the factory and the whole team has this new energy and kind-of feels like we’ve got a North Star: we know where we’re going; we know how to get there. So, everyone’s just churning away and working as hard as possible. So, excited to come here. I’m hoping that… we generally don’t know whether this track suits our car, and the car’s characteristics, but the weather may change that and we’ll see.

    Q: Are you doing a rain dance?

    LH: I don’t think I need to! Those clouds are looking pretty big outside!

    Q: You’ve seen the forecast! Final one from me. You did say in Barcelona that you were hoping to hook up with Toto Wolff after the race, to talk about your future with the team.

    LH: We’ve never hooked-up!

    Q: Did you have a meeting? You normally do it over pizza, right?

    LH:  No, we never have pizza! I’ve seen Toto, we’ve talked several times, we have a great relationship but there’s nothing else to say at the moment.

    Q: Any progress made? 

    LH: Yeah… but nothing else new to really add to it.

    Q: Kevin, let’s come to you next, your 150th race in Formula 1. What a ride it’s been for you. Just how do you reflect on the last ten years?

    Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, I mean, it always… when you think back, 150 races, it sounds like a lot but it actually doesn’t feel like that much. I always get surprised when new guys come into F1, and I see their age and I think about my own age and suddenly feel quite old! Actually, I feel young still, but time flies and I’m not a youngster anymore. 

    LH: How old are you?

    KM: I’m 30.

    LH: 30!

    KM: Were you surprised I wasn’t older, or…?

    LH: I think it’s the beard.

    KM: So, I look old! People say I look older than my Dad! I’ve seen that on the Internet. But no, it’s been a really fun ride, and it doesn’t feel like it’s anywhere near over yet. And yeah, I’m excited to be around still, and excited for the future.

    Q: Well, tell us about Spain next. It wasn’t an easy race for either you or your teammate. What have you learned since that race that’s going to help you this weekend?

    KM: Yeah, it was a tricky one because it was so up and down, you know? One session, we were close to top five and the next one, we were out-in-Q1 range, and it was going up and down so much that it was…  we made small changes to the car that we didn’t think was going to be big and it had a very big effect. So, it was a little bit of a confusing weekend. And you know, it obviously ended up not being a great one in the race too, with a lot of tyre wear and degradation. So, I’m hoping that we can find some actual answers that we can carry forward and avoid falling into the same trap.

    Q: Nico also said this week that he thinks the team needs to focus on Sundays, not Saturdays. Do you agree with him? 

    KM: Yeah, I do agree. I mean, at the end of the day, Sundays are the most important. If you have a fast car on Saturday, it doesn’t really matter if you’re really wearing out the tyres or just not fast on Sunday. So, that is clearly the priority: to find the pace on Sunday. It has been good in races this year, but it’s been a little bit up and down. Too much up and down. That’s clearly what we need to work on.

    Q: And do you think this race track will suit your driving style, a bit like it does Lewis’?

    KM: I don’t know about that. We have been struggling a little bit when it’s been bumpy and you know, this track is a bumpy one. And you’re also using the kerbs in all the chicanes and I don’t know if that’s going to suit us that well – but you often get surprised anyway and we’ll see.

    Q: Yuki coming to you now. You were upset after the race in Spain following the incident with Zhou Guanyu. What did you learn as a result of what happened on track there? And will you do anything differently, going forward, in terms of your wheel-to-wheel racing? 

    Yuki TSUNODA: I’m still upset with it but you cannot change anything. In the end, that’s what the FIA decided and actually, we spoke this afternoon with the FIA and understand their perspective. Other than that, nothing to say. I won’t change any approach, I would say, to be honest. In the end I will try as much as possible to defend it, within the limit. I thought it was in the limit and it was not – but in the end, it was using too much and you cannot defend, so, obviously I’ll try to change a little bit better. There’s room that I can improve in any situation. I feel, at the same time, a similar mindset to after the race, I felt quite harsh, but in the end it is what it is, and yeah, I just have to accept it.  

    Q: What about this weekend? Give us your thoughts on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. I’ve read that you compared it to Suzuka, and I think that’s an interesting comparison. Tell us more.

    YT: I’ve compared this track to Suzuka?

    Q: That’s what I’ve read – in your race preview.

    YT: It’s not similar at all!

    Q: Maybe… Were you thinking in terms of how it punishes mistakes like Suzuka does? Is that maybe what you were thinking?

    YT: Ah, OK, yeah. Well, Suzuka, we don’t drive kerbs, and here we drive kerbs. And it’s a street circuit here and not a street circuit in Suzuka, so… I don’t know. I was not in a good mood when I said that, or whatever! But yeah, I mean, in terms of there being grass next to the track surface is quite similar to Suzuka, which is challenging and still thrilling, and once you step-out, it’s quite costly. But if you compare to Suzuka, it’s not similar at all. So, it’s hard to say more than this but I try to maximise the lap-time within the grass.

    Q: And Yuki, are you confident that you can get back into the points? There’s been three races now that you’ve been outside.

    YT: Yeah, I think so. I mean, especially race pace, we’ve been positive consistently this year. So I try to maximise that, and one of our limitations now is a qualifying, try to extract as much as possible, end up as high position as much as possible, to be slightly easier than starting P15 or whatever. That’s our probable main challenge for this week. And I’m feeling positive. I think, so far, bumpy track is not too bad. Monaco, we performed quite well. So, feeling optimistic. I’ll try my best. I think weather will be a slight game changer and affect our strategy and pace, so see how it goes. 

    Q: Pierre, you’ve been busy away from the racetrack since we last saw you in Spain. You took in the tennis in Paris, you’ve been bowling here in Montreal, just tell us a bit more?

    Pierre GASLY: Yeah, it was quite nice to just have like a weekend to recharge back home and I’m quite a sports enthusiast, so I must say I quite enjoyed between MotoGP, 24 hours of Le Mans, Roland Garros, there was the Champions League final. So, I definitely enjoyed watching and following all that. And then we had a nice bowling event last night with the team, so it was pretty fun to just catch up and bond with the team members outside the race track. 

    Q: It was Djokovic, did you watch? 

    PG: Yeah, Djokovic, it was just incredible to witness. He won his 23rd Grand Slam and it was just impressive, just mentally and how strong his game was. Definitely I enjoyed it. 

    Q: Well, talking Formula 1, can we throw it back to qualifying in Spain next because you were given a six-place grid penalty for impeding. Are you and your engineer going to approach qualifying any differently this weekend to avoid something like that happening again? 

    PG: Yeah, obviously. I think it had a very bad impact, obviously, on our weekend, from Qualifying, for us to start P10 and drop to P14 on lap one, so it was definitely a pretty terrible start. But yeah, there are always things we can do better. There were small mistakes, which were done in Quali, which we reviewed and will improve in terms of procedure and communication. And yeah, it was a harsh penalty. Unfortunately, there is a regulation, which is applied most of the time and then we paid a pretty big price.

    Q: And do you think this circuit here in Montréal will suit your car?

    PG: I think the last three events have been pretty strong in terms of evolution and progress. We’ve scored points with both cars in these last three events. Miami was a step forward. Monaco, there was obviously a podium. Barcelona, we showed strong pace in Quali, with a fourth in Qualifying and again double points. So there are definitely positives. There are small details we need to work on to really make a step on Sundays, but overall, I think we’ve got decent potential in our package and I’m confident we can get a strong result again this weekend.

    Q: Checo, after a difficult couple of races, what is your mindset coming into this Canadian Grand Prix?

    Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, I basically want to reset and go again. Basically, Monaco was all down to me, I had a really bad mistake. But then in Barcelona, in the Qualifying again, it was tricky with the damp conditions. We didn’t manage to have a good Quali and then we paid the price on Sunday. So I’m looking forward to getting back to the form we had in the early season.

    Q: Is it difficult to get the car into the right window for you in Qualifying? Is that the cause of the problem?

    SP: It was difficult in Barcelona. It is the only time that I have difficulties with the car. I did struggle through the weekend, so it was tricky in Barcelona. But other than that, I think in Monaco we had the pace to really have a very good weekend but I did a mistake. I was caught out with a tailwind, with a car ahead and so on. No, I think the first time we had difficulties was in Barcelona.

    Q: And Christian Horner said that he thinks there’s less pressure on you now. Do you agree with him?

    SP: I don’t think so. I think we always have to deliver to our maximum and we just have to make sure we deliver. We have a great car and we should be having a lot of podiums, wins and so on, from now until the end of the year. We can see that the competition is getting closer and closer all the time, but we will try our best.

    Q: And do you think you’ll have the fastest car this weekend?

    SP: It’s a tricky race track. We’ve seen in Barcelona things are getting closer and certainly there’s always one or two teams that can get really close. And especially with how the weekend is looking, it’s looking really damp, so it will only get things a little bit closer.

    QUESTION FROM THE FLOOR

    Q: (David Croft – Sky Sports F1) Checo, you’re no rookie. You’ve been around for a while now, but I’m told, week after week, you never stop learning in life. I think it’s 50 races now, this weekend, for Red Bull, 50 races as a team-mate to Max. So, what have you learned from him as a driver that you can use to help you in what you say is now a reset for the rest of the season? What has he done that you think, ‘right, I need to do that to get more out of this?’

    SP: Well, I think he has been able to deliver when it matters – in Qualifying and he hasn’t had a bad weekend at all this year. And I think it’s what I need. I cannot afford to have any bad weekends anymore. I think I’ve had two or three bad weekends in the season, so I really have to get rid of those and keep the consistency high because I think it’s something that Max has been really good and consistent throughout this period.

    Q: (Simon-Olivier Lorange – La Presse) Lewis, it’s been a year and a half since you got a first place. After winning so much in your career, is it getting heavier and heavier to get this next win? Or are you able to really reset between every race and get to the next one with the idea of finally this is going to be the one? 

    LH: Yeah, I don’t feel any weight. We’ve gone through a tough patch and we’re kind of, like, on that up. And I feel that there’s been a feeling of like… For example, the last race and some of the races, it feels like we’ve had wins. It’s just about perspective. Of course, we’ve not been in first place but there have been many wins in the steps that we’ve taken. Last race, for us, as a team, to be on the podium with both drivers, that was a win for us. And so we’re just focused. We know, as I was just saying earlier, that we have that north star. We know where we need to go. We don’t know everything of how to get there but we know that together we can get there if we just keep our heads down and focus on the science. The engineering team is fantastic within the organisation. We’ve got great development team and I honestly think we’ve got the best development rate, as good if not better than any team in the sport and so you’ve just got to keep chipping away. 

    Q: (Luke Smith – The Athletic) Lewis, you spoke in New York, I think yesterday, about Mission 44, Ignite and the work you’re doing, obviously to improve diversity through motorsport. And with the contract talks with Toto, how much are these programmes a part of your future with Mercedes, something you’re talking more about, advancing them? And does it also point to this being way more than just a driver in a team wanting to work together to win races and championships? It’s about helping deep-rooted change in the sport.

    LH: Yeah, I think we already covered a lot of that already in the previous contract and so it’s really… we’ve got an amazing group of people back at the factory who are really refocused on D&I and really, there’s been huge progress within our team since the first time we’ve had the conversations, like the serious conversations, and the work that we’re doing with Accelerate 25, Ignite, which is now within Mission 44. And that’s really my role within Mission 44. And I think the team is always super supportive. I don’t know when you’re referring to, to be honest, maybe the Forbes thing you mean? Yeah. That’s still always going to be a focal point and the important thing, obviously, Mission 44 I think, I’m really proud of where we got it to. We’re now funding, I think it’s 25 or 26 different organisations out there, so starting to really start to have impact and see… Hopefully, we’ll start to see a better, fresher chain coming through from with more diverse students.

    Q: (Joost Smedema – NOS) Lewis, in 2017 you equalled the record of pole positions of Ayrton Senna here in Canada. This weekend, Max can equal the numbers of victories of Ayrton. If you think back on 2017, what is your feeling if you think back to that weekend? And could you describe the impact for you as a Formula 1 driver to be compared to Senna, which Max may experience this weekend as well?

    LH: 2017. Jeez, I don’t remember it. Yeah, I really can’t remember off the top of my head. I need to see a video or something like that. I’ve got a bad memory. But for me, it was very, very surreal just that being five years old, watching with my dad and the dream was to be like Ayrton. The dream was to get to Formula 1 and do something like him and then to then find that you’re matching equally in terms of results. You know, ultimately it’s unfair because there’s a lot more races in our time than there were back then. But still it was a real honour. I think I got it, they gave me a helmet or something like that, replica helmet, something like that, and so that was very cool. Yeah, Max has been doing an amazing job. He’s had such an incredible career so far and he’s for sure going to surpass that. (We’re) working on getting the car to where it needs to be so we can slow him down.

    Q: (David Schneider – Hershey Shiga Sports) Yuki, Mario Miyakawa, veteran business manager of Kamui Kobayashi and Jean Alesi, has been at your side this year. How have you decided on him and has it already positively influenced your workflow this year?

    YT: Yeah, definitely. First of all, we knew each other already. I got introduced by Mr Yamamoto from Honda in 2021, in Monaco. Since then, we keep in touch, just casually and we get along quite well. But same time we didn’t actually work together, and I approached to him last year around Abu Dhabi. And yeah, so far he’s doing the job that I wanted him to do and I’m really, really happy with him. Not just… I mean, managing just as a kind of friendship side, he’s really good and I feel like I can rely on him quite a lot. So yeah, I can trust him a lot, which is a good thing which is an important thing. And yeah, I feel quite happy with him.

    Q: (Adam Cooper – Motorsport.com) Question for Lewis and Checo as the more experienced guys. There’s a lot of talk about trying to bring the weight down for the next regulations in ‘26. But just now, Fernando said the bigger issue is the size of the cars, the dimensions in terms of manoeuvrability. Would you agree with that, that that’s more of an issue than the actual weight? 

    SP: Well, I think the dimensions of this car, probably they have an impact in places like Monaco, where it just gets harder to do racing. But other than that, I do think that the tyres, the size of the car are probably a little bit too big. Although we can follow a bit better, it seems a bit better to protect, defend your position. So I would welcome a lighter car as well but I don’t think it’s a main issue to me. It’s also the size of the car that is hurting a bit the racing side.

    LH: Similar. I think the dimensions are pretty good. I quite like the size of the car but obviously there are some places where it is tight as Checo said. But I think it is the weight that has definitely gone too far. Our wheels this year are a ridiculous weight. And there’s just no need. We’ve had light wheels in the past, and then the cars, just the braking zones are longer but I definitely think there’s some good changes they can make for the future. It’s not my decision, obviously. 

    Q: (Phil Duncan – PA) Lewis, Toto said earlier this week that it would be days rather than weeks in terms of the contracts. Given your latest discussions with him, is that how you see the timeline developing? And just going back to Max potentially matching Senna’s number of wins this weekend, that will take them to 41, I know he’s obviously quite a long way off your record of 103 but do you think there’s a chance that he could catch that or eclipse that given that he’s only 25?

    LH: He’s got a very long career ahead of him so absolutely. Ultimately, records are there to be broken. And he’s got an amazing team. But as I said, we’ve got to work harder to try and continue to extend it. I hope we get to have some… at least within the last period of time in my career, I hope we get to have some more close racing. And then I don’t really have a huge amount to say on the contractual side of things. It’ll get done when it’s done. If that’s next week, if that’s in a month’s time, as long as it gets done I’m not really bothered.

    Q: (Chris Medland – Racer) Lewis, actually having to look forward to Silverstone in a few weeks’ time, your home race, does the performance of the Mercedes in Barcelona bode well for your chances at that circuit? What are your hopes from the car there? And just how special is it to race at Silverstone?

    LH: Yeah, super excited to get to have the British Grand Prix. Hope… the weather has been amazing in the past week or so. When I left I think it was 29 degrees which was amazing. So let’s hope that that extends out to when we get there. And yeah, I’m really, really hopeful that the performance we had in the last race… I mean, we’re only like three tenths off… each lap, I was around three or four tenths off Max, which was the closest I think we’ve ever been this year. And I’m hoping by then, we will hopefully have taken another step. So I’m really, really hopeful that we can… maybe that will be a race where we get to actually race them but we’ll see.

    Q: (Nicolas Blasquez – AFP) Pierre, did you expect you and the team to get so positive an effect with the upgrades so quickly because you made a very big step forward in only a very short period of time?

    PG: Well, I think that the team last year showed really good progress and evolution with the upgrades throughout the entire season. And I think it was probably the strongest strength throughout the whole year. So I trusted in the team to improve the performance. We had a pretty slow start of the year, probably starting on the back foot and a bit further away from the competition than we would have liked. But clearly, I think it’s fair to say it came as a bit of a positive surprise that in Monaco we were able to fight for the podium. In Barcelona, again, top four in Qualifying, so there seems to be definitely some very good potential to unlock from the package we’ve got and that’s why I’m pretty confident in the coming races. The coming weekends, I think there are definitely some big points to get as a team.

    Bezzecchi bounces back, Bagnaia clashes with Viñales, Marquez slides out and there’s a home hero on the podium as Le Mans served up a day packed with headlines

    Le Mans, 14 May 2023: Take a minute to catch your breath after what was an incredible SHARK Grand Prix de France! Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) takes a special place in history as the race winner at the 1000th FIM Grand Prix after a stunning break for glory in front of a record crowd at Le Mans, and there was drama, drama, drama throughout the field.

    First, Bezzecchi is now just one point behind Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) after the Italian crashed out of the race in a dramatic clash with Aprilia Racing’s Maverick Viñales… gravel trap shouting match included, but both riders ok. Then, Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) vs Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) lit up the fight for second in a tough but fair tussle, but that then ended in late race heartbreak for the number 93 as he slid out. However, for the French fans it did mean Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) was then promoted to a glorious home podium after some impressive Sunday pace, giving the 278,805 record crowd even more to cheer about.

    The grid formed in front of the biggest crowd MotoGP™ has ever seen and it was Marc Marquez who shot into the lead as Bagnaia dropped down the order to P5. Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) slotted himself into P2 with Bezzecchi putting his VR46 Ducati into P3. Bagnaia then quickly snapped back at Martin as the Ducati riders duked it out on lap 1.

    It was Marquez, Miller, Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team), Bagnaia, and then Martin as they came across the line for the first time, and we had a race on our hands in MotoGP™. Miller wasn’t intimated by the eight-time World Champion by any means as the Aussie tried to force his way through on Marquez, but the Spaniard wouldn’t give in and hit straight back in true Marquez fashion.

    Miller hit the front at the Dunlop chicane, meanwhile, the reigning World Champion was on the move as Bagnaia had now climbed his way back up into a podium position with 25 laps remaining.

    The laps ticked away as a seven-bike battle for victory formed with Viñales carving his way into the 3rd place, the Aprilia seriously on the move. But then came the drama: the Spaniard collided with Bagnaia as both riders competed for the same piece of tarmac, both careening off into the gravel. Riders ok and to their feet… and then a fair few yells exchanged.

    Half a lap later, there was more drama in the Le Mans gravel traps as Marini suffered a big crash coming out of the Dunlop chicane, just cutting the kerb. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) then got caught in the Italian’s crash as the field behind avoided the incident, riders again ok but another huge moment of adrenaline shaking the race up.

    As the chaos subsided, we had a race on our hands. A four-rider battle for victory had formed as Miller now found himself with Marquez, Bezzecchi, and Martin for company, before Bezzecchi pushed his way through on Marc Marquez – and dropped the Spaniard from 2nd to 4th. The number 93 was sent into another postcode although no harm done, with both regrouping and Bezzecchi then told to drop a position for the move: a penalty he expected, and a penalty he also served wisely as he chose his moment to let Martin back through. And then took it back, with Marquez following suit too.

    Bezzecchi now had an open goal to make huge gains in the title fight as Bagnaia sat in the garage, and the VR46 rider took the lead from Miller as they barrelled into the Dunlop chicane once again. Marquez quickly followed him through half a lap later too, with Bezzecchi already stretching out half a second at the front.

    With 15 laps to go, Bezzecchi had 1.2s in his pocket to Marquez behind, who was 0.5s up the road from Martin, who had found his way through on Miller. The Aussie was starting to fall into the clutches of Zarco and Augusto Fernandez (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3). It didn’t take long for Zarco to push his way through either as the Frenchman moved up into P4 and Fernandez followed, leaving Miller in sixth.

    With six to go, Martin thought it was time to pounce on Marc Marquez. The Spaniard tried to push his way through on the eight-time World Champion, but the Repsol Honda man was not giving in easy and bit back at the Prima Pramac Racing rider at every opportunity. That allowed Zarco to edge closer and closer… and the crowd had definitely noticed.

    Martin finally pushed his way through with one and a half laps remaining, and this time the drama was for the number 93. Trying to hang in there, the returning Repsol Honda rider tucked the front and ended his French Grand Prix in the gravel trap, but after quite a return to the upper echelons of the timesheets.

    That meant one thing to a partisan crown: Zarco was on the podium. The grandstands erupted around the French circuit as Bezzecchi crossed the line for a first dry weather win, Martin ensured he’s the top scorer at Le Mans this year, and then the home hero reached the flag. The noise made for an impressive welcome.

    Fourth place was also something to shout about as Tech3’s Fernandez took an impressive result after an impressive weekend. First time in Q2, the GASGAS rider had had the speed all weekend and made it pay to perfection on Sunday to bounce back.

    Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) rounded out the top five as Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) recovered from being battered down the order on the first lap to fight his way back through the pack, take a long penalty for a shortcut, and still manage to take sixth.

    Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) had a tougher home Grand Prix but took a chunk of points on Sunday as the 2021 World Champion ended his weekend in Le Mans with a P7, with Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia), and Franco Morbidelli taking 8th, 9th, and 10th – just ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Lenovo Team) on his MotoGP™ return deputising for the injured Enea Bastianini.

    Early race leader Miller crashed out with three laps remaining after the Aussie had been dropping down the order on his KTM machine, making it a weekend to forget in terms of results but one to remember for speed. Can he bounce back at Mugello? Many will be looking to join him in doing so…

    MARCO BEZZECCHI: “I expected the penalty. I didn’t want to pass but I braked a bit too late and when I realized I was getting closer and closer, I tried to go to the inside to not hit him. Unfortunately I pushed him wide so I thought for sure they give me a drop position. I was ready for it and I agree, also. It was a bit too much. It’s difficult to pass but I didn’t really want to pass, but it’s ok. Fortunately I kept myself calm about the penalty I knew was coming, tried to find the right place to give up the position and then fight back. 

    How was that winning feeling?
    “It was fantastic. I saw I was fast, at the beginning I didn’t want to use the front tyre too much or put too much temperature in it. When I was behind someone, I was trying to pass quite quick and when I found myself at the front I thought, ‘now I have fresh air’. I tried to push and see how it is. On Friday I had good pace so I tried to make the same but it was even better! I was able to ride 31.9, 31.8 and it was fantastic. I saw I was escaping so I tried to stay calm and concentrate, at one with my bike, and it was an incredible emotion crossing the line in the dry. In the wet was good but in the dry even better!”

    And on that bet to not shave their moustaches until he won again…
    “This is the thing I’m most happy about. I made this bet first in December before Christmas with my team, we were having dinner together and to break their balls a little bit I said ‘ok, you all have a long beard but if I win, you have to make it moustache and we won’t shave it until I win again. But then when I did win I said, ‘No! Now I have to really have a moustache!’ I was so nervous because it wasn’t coming anymore, so fortunately today when I saw the feeling was good, I said ‘today’s the day!”

    Le Mans all set to host the historic 1000th MotoGP race

    Le Mans, 9 May 2023: As you all know, this weekend Le Mans will host the 1000th Grand Prix in history. Here are some stats for the occasion! 

    1949 – The Grand Prix World Championship was introduced in 1949 with four classes for solo motorcycles: 500cc, 350cc, 250cc and 125cc. The very first race counting towards a World Championship classification was the 350cc race on Monday June 13th 1949 on the Isle of Man, won by Freddie Frith on a Velocette.

    817 – Honda is the most successful manufacturer in GP racing with 817 wins ahead of Yamaha (520), Aprilia (295), MV Agusta (275), Kalex (165) and Suzuki (162).

    432 – Valentino Rossi is the rider with most GP starts: 432, meaning he’s raced in more than 43% of all the Grands Prix that have taken place. 

    393 – From the very first race in 1949 to the 2023 Spanish GP, 393 different riders have stood on the top step of the podium. The most recent “new winner” is Ivan Ortola in Moto3™ in Austin this year. 

    235 – Valentino Rossi is the rider with the most podiums with 235, ahead of Giacomo Agostini (159), Dani Pedrosa (153), Jorge Lorenzo (152), Angel Nieto (139) and Marc Marquez (139).

    125 – 125 different riders have clinched a Grand Prix World Championship, taking a total of 284 titles. Giacomo Agostini holds the record with 15, ahead of Angel Nieto (12 + 1), Mike Hailwood (9), Rossi (9) and Carlo Ubbiali (9).

    122 – Agostini is the most successful rider with 122 GP wins ahead of Rossi (115) and Nieto (90). Marc Marquez is fourth with 85 wins, ahead of Hailwood with 76.

    73 – Assen is the venue that has hosted the most Grands Prix. It held an event every year since the World Championship started back in 1949, until 2019. The 2020 Dutch TT was then cancelled due to the pandemic, making it 73 Dutch TTs so far counting towards the World Championship. 

    73 – Since 1949, 73 different circuits have hosted a premier class Grand Prix; Mandalika is the most recent addition, joining the calendar in 2022. 

    30 – Since 1949, 30 different manufacturers have clinched Grand Prix World titles. Honda leads with 72 titles ahead of Yamaha (37), MV Agusta (37), Aprilia (19) and Suzuki (15).

    Le Mans, 13 May 2021: It’s that time of week again: pre-event Press Conference time! Ahead of the SHARK Grand Prix de France, new Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) was joined by home heroes Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing), as well as Jerez winner Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team), Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) to look back at Jerez and forward to what could be a mixed weekend of weather at Le Mans…

    Here are some key quotes:

    Francesco Bagnaia: “I’m the leader for just 10 days so I don’t know. It’s good, it’s nice but we have only done four races so it’s too soon to think about it. We just thinking race by race, this is a track that I like. I did three podiums here, one in Moto3 and a victory and second in Moto2 and it’s a track that suits our bike very well. I’m prepared to ride here but we need to see the weather forecast, because it looks like it will be rain and in the wet I’ve done just six races, I think, in all categories in MotoGP, so let’s wait. Last year I struggled in the second part of the race, after 12/13 laps because at the start I started well but I was behind, then I recovered positions to 8th, 9th and then they came back. In the wet our bike is very strong, but it’s not easy with these tyres because they give you a lot of grip and it’s not easy to manage.

    “I think that all three of us Ducati riders will be hoping that in every track it will be good. It’s difficult to predict a race in the wet, we have to wait until Sunday to see if we can be as competitive as Jerez. But I think our bike can be very suited to all the tracks, now we can ride it in a different way and different styles and it works very well, so I think we can be very strong this year.”

    Fabio Quartararo: “It was pretty frustrating during the race and you have the pace to do it, but you don’t have the power. Every single lap you have more difficulties to brake until the moment you just have normal power. There was still more than 10 laps remaining. The first moment was losing the opportunity to win, but then it was just trying to finish the race in the points. So it was the right time to have a second surgery on the arm. I’m feeling great, the scar is stretching a little bit. I can’t wait for tomorrow to ride. I’m feeling great and I don’t think there will be any issues while riding.

    “I’m really looking forward to testing the bike in the wet. Last year was a little bit strange because the really wet conditions, we only really had it on the Sunday, also FP1, but yeah. I’m feeling great in the dry conditions in every single track so I’m excited to test it in the wet, I hope it’s working as, you know, two years ago I was always feeling really good with the bike. I think this feeling is going to be well, a great opportunity to ride in the wet, not just in one session but for all the weekend. And yeah, just want to take as much experience as I can and to do my best.”

    Johann Zarco: “In Jerez I got a few points, and it was good enough for me, but with the high potential of the Ducati, and the victory of Jack, the second place of Pecco in Jerez, the leadership of Pecco, it really gives high motivation also to do a great result here in France. As Pecco says the tracks fit the bike well here, or better than Jerez. In Jerez, the pace was interesting of the Ducati, so I’m pretty happy to have this package with me. We don’t have the fans, we are used to almost, and it’s on some side sad, because less funny things around the track but to stay focused and almost get the weekend as a normal weekend, that’s pretty good so for the work and for the target to be on podium, it can help.

    “I think it would be nice to share a podium if we have the possibility, all three together. Anyway from the beginning of the season we could see that we could be at the top of the race, but the beginning was I could stay in front and then it was Pecco and Jack, and we still did not share it all together and that would be just awesome for Ducati and good for us also because as we can see we have, I think good spirit together, and this gives good motivation so just cross fingers to get it.”

    Jack Miller: “It’s a whole mix of everything you know, relief, but also it makes you more eager for the next one. At the end of the day, bike racers we’re always looking for what’s next and what we can try to do more, you know, we always want more so for sure just looking at coming here and trying to do a strong weekend like we did in Spain. I mean it’s been a pretty calm week to be honest, I’ve just stuck to what we’ve been doing the last few and just been training and doing what I can. Thankfully there was some decent weather in Spain and Andorra over the week and I was able to get out on the bicycle but doesn’t look like we will have much of that this weekend! I think we’re prepared for all conditions that are coming this weekend. I’ve been known to be pretty good in the wet so if that comes it comes, I feel like I’ve got a score to settle with Le Mans, you know after last year.

    “You know I have a kind of love-hate relationship with France, with Le Mans especially. I’ve had a win here in Moto3™, but I nearly died here at Turn 1, and then last year I did feel like I died as well, when the bike cut out with like seven to go! I think we’ve got a good package as the boys said, we’ve all been there or thereabout, I think whether it comes in Le Mans, I think it would be better in Mugello, but I think we have a good chance of locking out the podium!”

    Morbidelli spoke next, first on his emotional reaction to his podium in Jerez.

    Franco Morbidelli: “First of all because it’s a MotoGP podium. And then because of what we’re going through. That podium had a different taste for sure, it felt great. I burst after the chequered flag, I think it’s because of a really big emotion gathering, and after a good result everything comes out.

    “My expectations were already reassessed from Qatar 1 and 2. I immediately realised that I needed to step it up again if I wanted to remain in a similar position to last year. That’s what I’m trying to do and that’s what we did in Portimao and Jerez. So I hope to keep on doing that and keep on working at the best with my crew, to enjoy racing, be the best I can and try to improve whenever I can.”

    Takaaki Nakagami: “From the Qatar test, we were not with the best performance and we struggled in Qatar, Race 1 and Race 2, and also in Portimão, the big crash on Friday and you know, we couldn’t find the solution. On Sunday in Portimão, from the last position, we were able to finish in top ten. This is a really important result for us, and after that, I started to think about, you know, I can find a solution for not the best of the best, but you know maybe we can fight for the top five or top six again. Then in Jerez, from Friday, we found the pace and had a good race so I’m pretty happy you know, to get really close to the podium, you know, P4 which is a really great result for us and I’m looking forward to this weekend too.”

    This is also the first time in some time there have been five riders giving feedback to HRC…
    “You know one more rider will be good, you know, there will be more data and good to help develop the bike easily, more comments and, you know, for HRC, I think also for us, for the riders, it is really good to understand you know, not lose the way. We try to pick up positive comments for all of the riders and you know it helps a lot to develop, and now looks like we found a way and pretty comfortable on the new bikes.”

    Shanghai, 25 Nov 2019: Superlative race performances from India’s JK Racing backed Arjun Maini, Canada’s John Farano and New Zealand’s Andy Higgins assured RLR MSport of the LMP2 Am Trophy victory in the season-opening 4 Hours of Shanghai that places the British team at the head of the fight for an automatic entry to the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2020.

    Arjun Maini of RLR MSport topped the charts in private testing and maintained a significant advantage over its LMP2 Am rivals in free practice to go into qualifying as the favourite for pole position.

    However, a string of track limits infringements prompted stewards to delete the team’s best qualification times, and a 1m57.841s, set by Maini on a cautious banker lap, resigned the squad to second in class.

    From the front row of the LMP2 Am grid, Maini made a clean start and quickly relieved the #4 ARC Bratislava entry of the lead.

    The young Indian racer made good on his escape, consistently lapping between two and four seconds quicker than his nearest rival to build a massive advantage and break ranks by getting in among the LMP2 Pro runners.

    Having risen to third place overall during an extraordinary 50-minute stint, Maini gave way to Farano in the first round of scheduled stops.

    The Canadian Am managed the race well and breached the 2m05s barrier during a fault-free stint to keep RLR MSport at the top, but the team’s 40-second lead turned into a 40-second deficit after the second round of driver-changes.

    The 3-member RLR MSport team, including Arjun Maini, which won the race at Shanghai.

    RLR MSport switched Farano for Higgins under green-flag conditions shortly before a protracted Full Course Yellow-Safety Car period, which presented ARC Bratislava with an opportunity to minimise its time in the pits and take the lead.

    In an attempt to recover the lost ground, RLR MSport reinstalled Maini and fitted the #59 ORECA 05 with fresh tyres, only for the #4 car to grind to a halt with one hour remaining.

    From there, the team had a clear run at the top step of the podium; Maini and Higgins drove consistently during outstanding stints to finish seventh overall and take a dominant LMP2 Am victory on RLR MSport’s maiden outing in the burgeoning Asian Le Mans Series

    Maini said:“I’m quite happy with the result and my performance, although the victory came harder than expected. We were unlucky with the timing of the first Full Course Yellow, but I was actually disappointed that ARC Bratislava retired – I wanted to pass them on-track, because we were in a strong position to do so with our pace and strategy. However, it was a good fight, Andy (Higgins) did a great job in his maiden LMP2 race and John (Farano) performed brilliantly in his first competitive outing with the ORECA 05, and it’s comforting to know that we can make more progress with the car next time out in Australia.”
