Tijil Rao wins another race to lead the table; Sarvesh, Abhishek shine on bikes

Coimbatore, August 27, 2023: Bengaluru teenagerRuhaan Alva of MSport signed off on a merry note winning the first race on Day 2 but compatriot Tijil Rao of Dark Don Racing had the last laugh with a fine victory in the last race as he made it a double in the in the premier LGB Formula 4 class of the 26th JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship, the first round of which concluded at the Kari Motor Speedway here on Sunday.

Tijil Rao, who shared honours with Arya Singh yesterday, won another race and made it a double to take the championship lead. In the opening race, all eyes were on the Dark Don Racing stars but it was Bengaluru’s Ruhaan who won Race 3 with a stunning overtake in the final lap. However, Tijil made a comeback with a facile win in the final Race 4 and ended Round 1 on a high leading the points table in the LGB F4 class.

Arya Singh (Dark Don Racing) dominated for most part but Ruhaan played catch up with some brilliant driving. The former was beginning to feel the pressure. There was a little bumping and jostling now and then between the two but Ruhaan kept searching for space to sneak in. He managed to find one in the final lap and crossed the line much without any further hiccups.

The second was as good as the first but Tijil did one better than the rest to clinch the thriller. With the reverse grid in play, it was Saran Vikram Tmars (Mars Racing) who started off on a blitzy note staying in the lead for good five laps, however it was Ruhaan who overtook him and was primed for victory.

Tijil Rao after Race 3 (in pic) makes a strong comeback.

    Tijil Rao at his best:

Ruhaan failed to hold on to the lead as he spun out of the race giving the Dark Don’s racers a fresh leash of life with Diljith and Tijil battling it out for the victory. While it looked like the senior pro Diljith would close the round on a high, it was the young Tijil who showed grit and great skills to overtake in the 13th lap. It was a sight to behold as both the racers were involved in a to and fro action but eventually Tijil brought in his car ahead of others to win the race, and a double in the weekend.

Neythan McPherson wins Novice Cup Race 3

In the JK Tyre Novice Cup, Bengaluru’s Arjun S. Nair of Momentum Motorsports, who cracked a double on Saturday, for once could not celebrate on top of the podium in the first race as his teammate Neythan McPherson from Pune staved off a stiff challenge from him and Aman
Nagdev (MSport) and took a good win.

The nine-lap race saw the safety car out twice and that took some flow and shine out of the event.  Aman and Arjun finished second and third respectively.

But in the second race, Joel Joseph (DTS Racing) came out victorious, while Arjun and McPherson wrested the next two spots.

    Good week-end for Arjun Nair

However, it was a good week-end for Arjun Nair, who took two victories and two podiums to lead the table in the Novice class after Round 1. “The weekend results justified the countless hours spent fine-tuning our strategies, perfecting my driving, and pushing myself all the time. The competition is fierce, but I managed to raise my performance up to it. I am motivated to work hard physically and to give my best for the remainder of the championship,” said Arjun Syam Nair confidently.

    Sarvesh Balappa rules the roost

Hubballi’s Sarvesh Balappa, starting on P2, ruled the field in the JK Tyre presents 250 Cup. Pole sitter G Abhinav (Coimbatore) brought some cheer to the home crowd clocking the fastest time of 1:25.00. He maintained a good pace but not good enough to outsmart Sarvesh at the end. Bengaluru’s Rohit ad had to be content with the third spot.

    Abhishek Vasudev at his best

In the JK Tyre Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup, it was the Bengaluru boys who stole the show with a clean sweep. Abhishek Vasudev emerged victorious with an impressive timing of 13 minutes 53.248 seconds, while his city-mates, Ullass Nanda (13:53.651) and Md Samrul Zubair (13:57.403) were the others who stood second and third on the podium respectively.

Arjun Nair bags a double in Novice class; Arya Singh, Tijil Rao share LGB F4 honours

Coimbatore, August 26, 2023: It was a fantastic start by Dark Don Racing as their drivers Tijil Rao and Arya Singh shared a win apiece in the LGB Formula 4 class, the premier event, in the opening round of the 26th JK Tyre National Racing Championship which began at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam here on Saturday.

Tijil started the day finishing on top of the podium in the opening race. It was not easy though for the Bengaluru youngster as his teammates Arya Singh (Kolkata) and T.S. Diljith (Thrissur) gave him a run for his money. The lead kept changing hands lap after lap and, midway through, it was all about holding one’s nerve. But Tijil, despite the pressure, kept his cool, waited for the right moment to strike, and planned his move well in the final lap to take the checkered flag in style.

For Team Dark Don racing it did not matter as Arya and Diljith wrested the next two positions. In the second race, Arya gained sweet revenge over Tijil with a thrilling win. It was wheel-to-wheel racing between the two and, with three laps to go, it looked like anybody’s game and, with it, another clean sweep for Dark Don Racing. The arrival of the safety car made it even more exciting for the spectators but not for the top three contenders as the back markers gained a slight
    advantage.

At this juncture, all eyes were on Arya and Tijil but the former did one better than the latter when it mattered most to finish the day on a merry note. Tijil and Viswas Vijayaraj of Ahura Racing had to rest content for the second and third spots respectively.

Bengaluru’s Arjun Nair, representing Momentum Motorsports, started the season on a super note as well clinching a sweet double in the JK Tyre Novice Cup. He clocked the fastest timing in both the races and showed all that he had the race pace to beat the best.

    R. Anand of Chennai scored over a strong field to take the prime spot on the podium in the JK Tyre presents Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup. In an incident filled race, which had to be restarted due to a couple of accidents saw Md Samrul Zubair of Hyderabad give Anand a run for his money but Anand crossed the line with rather consummate ease.

From Isle of man to Kari Motor Speedway: Adrien Sellers reminsces

Bengaluru/Leicester, 30 Nov 2021: Royal Enfield is a big bike. Big enough to look like a hero or heroine when riding one. It has its advantages on the roads and is considered the King of Indian roads. A craze with the youth, and more and more girls are riding the ‘Bullets’ now. One look at the Bullet clubs or a leisurely walk on the highways early morning on any Saturday or Sunday, one cannot miss the many thundering dud-duds of these Big Brothers. Whether it is the India Bulls, the IndiaBullRiders and the Bulleteers, or the Bikernis. Whether it is Bengaluru, Chennai, or Pune, one cannot miss the thrill of bullets vrooming past in formations and groups… or alone. All by themselves.

Royal Enfield at the Isle of Man! A nostalgic YouTube!

Royal Enfield is an Indian multinational motorcycle manufacturing company and the oldest global motorcycle in continuous production. The Indian headquarters is in Chennai where there is also a manufacturing plant. On numerous visits to the MMSC race track from Bengaluru over the years, this writer has encountered umpteen bikers of various makes at the roadside tea shops on the outskirts of Garden City, which hosts the oldest Riders club, the India Bull Riders. But Bullets stand out!

Coming back, Royal Enfield in partnership with JK Tyre has introduced the Continental GT Cup in India in 2021 and the 18 riders will take their machines onto the track at the Kari Motor Speedway once again for the second round this weekend in Coimbatore conducted along with the Formula car races of JK National Racing Championship. Hubbali’s Anish Shetty is leading the table after the first round.

Indian Motorsports website, INDIAinF1.com had the pleasure of interacting today with Adrian Seles of Royal Enfield from Leicester in England along with Vaibhav, who has conducted the selection trials and is looking after the Indian GT races.

Royal Enfield bikes at the Kari Motor Speedway at the JK Tyre National Racing Championship.

    Excerpts from the interview:

Question: Can you briefly take us through the selection and elimination process for the shortlisted riders?

Vaibhav: We had an overwhelming response for the selection trials and we had actually followed an elimination process to select the top-18 fastest riders. We had a series of trials in Coimbatore for over two days. We had both newcomers who had an experience just on Royal Enfield bikes on the road and those who were already into road racing. But next year we are planning to have two separate sections. One for the Juniors and one for professionals.

Q: How is Continental GT Cup different from other One Make Championships?

Adrian: To make them the absolute best they could be. To allow the riders to ride as best they can.

Vaibhav: In fact, David, in addition to that, if you look at the racing scene for two-wheelers in India, we have the manufacturers who have one-make championships and all have single-cylinder screens. They have motorcycles for 150 to 250 cc, maybe 310 now, but nobody has a one-make championship with the twin-cylinder 650cc era so that also sets us apart.

Q: What Modifications were done to Continental Gt Cup to make it race-ready?

Adrian: Not that many. We just adjusted and tuned it to make it a bit better in the more extreme condition in the track race. Things like optimising springs both front and rear, padding rear sets, changing the exhaust, and tuning the ECU, these things that don’t change the fundamental structure and composition of the motorcycle but at the same time make it the best version of itself that it can be. Obviously going around the track is a very different set of conditions than riding on the road and this stock continental GT is designed to ride on the road. It is designed to take the entire pothole and the speed humps, and dodger on traffic, and so on. Whereas on the track it is a more consistent and reliable surface, your speed is a lot higher, and so on. So, we’ve taken those considerations that we put into a road bike and put it back into the bike for tuning it for track use. Another edition that of course includes is the faring which is a fairly obvious observation but for the visual aspect, we’ve done well also for the rider, allowing them to achieve the speed.

Q: Usually Bullets are heavy, I first learned my riding on a Bullet but they are more into off-roading now. We get lots of news on Bullet through Bullet rider clubs like one we have in Bengaluru and one in Delhi but racing with a bullet is a new thing in India. For the last few years, whether it is a rally championship or sprint or the Bullet class itself. That is here to stay. So maybe you could tell a bit about how bullets raced around the world in different championships.

Adrian: Historically, Royal Enfield has raced in various championships since the company started. We’ve been participating in these sorts of things. In Track racing, we’ve obviously got only one who has been around for a very long time. He made a mark on the racing scene in India. We have winners of various trophies from around the world. The important thing for us in the modern new Royal Enfield days over the past 10-15 years is re-entering those competitions showing the kids over the motorcycles that irrespective of whichever model it is we’ve entered the competitive platform with our team alliance for example. We’ve also now of course run the GT Cup. We also entered flat track racing in the US and in the UK. We’ve had to go out and race our motorcycle in pretty much every geography. Interestingly enough, retro racing as a thing is becoming increasingly popular everywhere. The expanse of and quite frankly scary running a proper sport bike, a big old cylinder sports bike or whatever sports bike, is prohibited to most people and so when you look at our motorcycles, the actual cost of running it is very low, continental is very low, tire-wear is a lot less and so it is a lot easier for people to engage with this super fun activity so that’s where we get a lot of excitement out of it not just that aspect of top tear competition that you’re entering in as well but in making it extremely accessible for people to get into these racing activities.

I was at the EICMA show in Italy where we were talking with some of our French owners and they get out and race regularly, largely unmodified, just here and there but they go out on them all the time. These are the guys that used to formerly go out on the Japanese super sports bike. You feel it’s still necessary. They have way more fun on their GTs than on the more powerful motorcycles because they can get the absolute most out of the bike while still having their proper big-bike experience. Many of the accessible racing around the world is on smaller bikes which is fun of course but after a point, you look for a bigger bike experience and that’s what we can offer.

Q: Tell us a little bit about how the research done on this championship happening in Coimbatore was transferred back onto the road bikes?

Vaibhav: As of now, it’s very nascent, we have only done two rounds. In technical terms, there are meager changes made in the Stock GT like suspension has been made only stiffer, the rubber on the race tyre is soft compound and the exhaust has been changed. The intention was to show that this bike is already so good and capable in its own ways like Adrian said, people are already taking the stock bike to track. Yes, we have made some changes to the bike as we are not doing track days on this bike, we are actually racing with a grid of 18 youngsters riders who are doing an entire championship and competing for points.

Adrian: A lot of the people who were involved with the modifications to the GT Cup bike were tuned in to develop our stock motorcycle whether it’s suspension or electronic, it’s the same crew.

Q: What are the things we expect from the next edition?

    • Want to add a new category to the GT Cup to enable more amateur participation, something like the junior and senior category
    • We are still working on the same, and we’ll plan to this
    • This is the first time we are doing this and very beginning of our story
    • One of the reasons we were thinking this as we want to add more grids and categories to give more people an opportunity to race on the GT R650

Q: This year you came up with 18 bikes or more?

We have to have spare bikes to run a grid of 18 bikes but we try and utilise the same 18 bikes for every race so that everybody has an equal blend field. The idea is to minimise the use of the spares purely because all our 18 bikes are being used equally from the open practice of Round 1. Every rider has been allocated one motorcycle that he/she will use for the rest of the championship. But we do have spare bikes

Question: For service, do you have any team?

We have associates that have been chosen by the team who are helping us.

We make sure there is always technical support for all the racers with all the pieces of equipment required, providing them with professional race experience.

David: Thank you for taking time off from your busy schedule. Nice talking to you.

JK Tyre Racing Nationals at Kari Speedweay

Coimbatore, 9 Dec 2020: The Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam in Coimbatore will hear the familiar roar of Formula cars as the much-awaited 23rd JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship (JKNRC) gets under way here on Friday.
The organisers have put in place stringent protocols, matching international standards, to ensure that the back to back rounds are held with the safety, comfort and convenience of all the teams, drivers, their support staff, officials and media in mind. “We have studied and followed every precaution prescribed by the world as well as national governing bodies to make sure that the championship is conducted smoothly,” Sanjay Sharma, Head-Motorsport, JK Tyre said. “In these unprecedented times we are delighted that we could host such an important event in the FMSCI calendar,” he added.

JKNRC this season will witness two categories – The National championship class on JK Formula LGB 4, an Indian manufactured single seater racing car weighing 450 kg with 1.3 litre engine and JK Tyre Novice Cup for rookie drivers on a similar looking formula 1300s but with different chassis design and suspension geometry. The former has attracted 26 of the country’s best drivers while the latter has more than 20.

There will be 12 races over three days, with each day witnessing four races (including two qualifying rounds on Day 1) that will test not only the speed but also the fitness and endurance of the drivers coupled with technical package put together by the teams.

As in the past, an all-women’s team from Ahura racing will also be in fray adding to flowing of adrenaline on the track.

The top racers of the country, including Vishnu Prasad, Raghul Rangasamy and Mira Erda (MSport), Ashwin Datta and T.S. Diljith (Dark Don Racing), and Chirag Ghorpade (Momentum Motorsport) to name a few will be in fray, battling for the honours.

The pomp and gaiety that comes as a package with every JK Tyre Racing Championship will however be missing this time around in adherence of safety regulations.

Among the key steps taken to battle COVID-19, the organisers will have clear dos and don’ts s right from the main entry gate to all the way up to the track. The pits too have been extended considerably to ensure social distancing.

Local officials will be helping with bulk of the work to avoid too many visitors from other cities and states.

The documentation and scrutiny will be on Thursday, followed by a compulsory drivers’ briefing towards the end of the day.

Friday will witness official practice sessions, qualifying rounds and two races in each category followed by four races on Saturday and Sunday.

For the sake of race lovers, who have always thronged the circuit in large numbers, the event will be streamed live on Sunday so that they don’t miss the action. Viewers can watch the races on:

Its first target was to change the notion that this was a sport for the elite. So it packaged and redesigned it in a spectator-friendly way, drawing the
    masses to the sport.

The company then endeavored to spot, nurture and sharpen the drivers to turn them into world champions. With this goal in mind, we conceptualized the JK Tyre National Racing Champion in 1997. Our efforts started paying dividends in just a few years’ time, with the likes of Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandok going all the way to the F1 rung, the highest level of single-seat racing in the world. Since then, a number of stars emerged, including Armaan Ebrahim, the Maini brothers (Kush and Arjun), Anindith Reddy Konda, amongst many others.

Before all this, JK Tyre had a successful stint in rallying too, conquering the scene in the early 90s. At the same time, gradually, we moved on to various disciplines, including cross-country rallying and off-roading, leaving a mark in each of them with their unique and innovative ways. JK Tyre Motorsports is also very proud of the role it has played in bringing women into motorsports in a big way. Apart from encouraging them to get into the sport through karting as kids, we also gave them opportunities in various national championships. Last year was particularly rewarding for us as an All-Women Racing team was introduced for the first time in the LGB 4 category. In addition, the company also undertook various other initiatives to encourage them to try motorsports, even if for fun to begin with.

To supplement JK Tyre’s entry into the two-wheeler market, the JKNRC hosted the Suzuki Gixxer Cup and the Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup categories and saw enthusiastic participation from across the country. Today, the company is synonymous with motorsports, and even more so with racing, creating a lot of goodwill for
the brand. Right from budding racers to accomplished drivers in the country, everybody owes their rise and
    success to JK Tyre.

  • Ashwin Datta consolidates position; double for Chittesh Mandody

Ashwin Datta consolidates position; double for Chittesh Mandody

File photo of Kolhapur’s Chittesh Mandody, who won both the LGB Formula 4 races on Sunday.

Coimbatore, 14 October 2018: Chennai’s Ashwin Datta moved a step closer to his maiden Euro JK title in the 21st JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship as a dramatic Round 3, replete with ups, downs and upsets, concluded at the Kari Motor Speedway here on Sunday.

Ashwin (74 points after R3 ), who was just two points ahead of Nayan Chatterjee (66 after R3) as the action began on Saturday, made the most of Nayan’s DNF to widen his lead. But Chennai’s Karthik Tharani (68 after R3) won the next two races to come back into the equation.

The final race of the weekend, however, saw a totally new set of winners, with Nirmal Uma Shankar, Brayan Perera and Yash Aradhya claiming the podium places. Ashwin finished fourth, though, ahead of his key competitors to be 6 points ahead of the field.

The LGB Formula 4 too proved to be topsy-turvy but Vishnu Prasad (59) managed to keep his nose barely ahead despite not having the best of weekends with Chittesh Mandody (Avalanche) scoring a fine double.

Delhi’s Rohit Khanna seemed to be cruising ahead after winning the first race on Day 1 and starting Day 2 with another victory. However, a series of incidents led to a number of protests, that saw him being penalized by 20 seconds and slip down from No. 1 to 13.

In the final race, Rohit just couldn’t recover his poise and ended up with a DNF. Vishnu too had a poor race, finishing ninth and without a point. Raghul Rangasamy is now on the second place on the Championship table with 57 points.

The other Chennai star Joseph Mathew too had an eventful race, beating Malsawmdawngliana literally at the post. Joseph began cautiously, allowing his rival from Aizawl to take the lead. He overtook him at the halfway stage only to see Malsawmdawngliana streak past him in the final lap.

Just as victory seemed in Malsawmdawngliana’s grasp, Joseph outwitted him, winning by a wafer-thin margin of 0.087 seconds. This is Joseph’s sixth straight victory in the three rounds and puts him firmly in line for another title.

The JK Tyre Novice Cup too saw a dramatic turn of events, which led to Surya Varathan claiming the championship and Tijil Rao taking the second place.

Hashim EKP, who had won all three races over the weekend to move ahead, was disqualified as he had contravened the competition norms.

    The results (Provisional):

    Euro JK 18 – Race 3: 1. Karthik Tharani (15:37.117); 2. Nayan Chatterjee (15:38.043); 3. Ashwin Datta (15:40.886). Race 4: 1. Nirmal Uma Shankar (15:42.818); 2 Brayan Perera (15:46.014); 3. Yash Aradhya (15:47.130).

    Formula LGB 4 – Race 2: 1. Chittesh Mandody (Avalanche; 18:47.313); 2. Sarosh Hataria (Dark Don; 18:47.409); 3. Sohil Shah (MSport; 18:47.957). Race 3: 1. Chittesh Mandody (20:11.953); 2. Sarosh Hataria (20:12.040); 3. Raghul Rangasamy (MSport; 18:13.676).

JK Tyre Novice Cup: 1. Tijil Rao (Momentum; 18:40.030); 2. K Surya Varathan (MSport; 18:40.342); 3. Jamwal Digveshar (Prudent; 18:56.462).

  • Ashwin Datta stays ahead in JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship on a day of crashes

Ashwin Datta stays ahead in JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship on a day of crashes

Chennai’s Ashwin Datta in action on Saturday in JK Tyre National Racing Championship.

Coimbatore, 13 October 2018: On a day of thrills and crashes, Ashwin Datta made the most of his good fortune to hang on to his Euro JK 2018 lead in the 21st JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship at the Kari Motor Speedway here on Saturday.

Joseph Mathew too continued his stunning run in the Suzuki Gixxer Cup, winning his fifth straight race to widen his Championship lead further. The LGB Formula 4, however, saw a mini upset, with Delhi’s Rohit Khanna (Dark Don Racing) pulling off a stunning victory.

Mumbai’s Nayan Chatterjee started the day on a high note in the Euro JK 2018, claiming the pole position in a tight qualifying session. He turned out to be just 0.316 seconds faster than the field but looked set to give Ashwin a mighty fight.

But he was a tad slow off the mark in Race 1, and Karthik Tharani shot past him before the first turn itself. As if that was not enough, Nayan and Tharani got caught in a tangle midway through the race, forcing both of them off the tarmac.

Tharani managed to recover, but Nayan failed to finish, losing valuable points. Ashwin Datta took advantage of the situation to streak ahead into the lead. He began from P3 but came into his own soon, clocking the fastest lap time of 1:01.422.

In Race 2, with the reverse grid for the top six coming into play, young Yash Aradhya started on pole. Yash made the most of the opportunity to build a sizable lead, but he slipped out of contention due to another minor collision.

Coimbatore, 21 June 2018: Packed and quality grids will feature the second round of the MRF MMSC fmsci Indian National Racing Championship commencing at the Kari Motor Speedway here this weekend which will also witness the opening round of the Volkswagen Ameo Cup.

As in the previous seasons, the MRF F1600 winner at the end of the championship comprising 12 races over four rounds, will earn the right to participate in the Mazda Road To Indy shootout in the United States. The winner of the shootout will be eligible for a scholarship of USD 200,000.

The MRF Formula Ford 1600 will no doubt headline the programme. It boasts of a 14-strong line-up featuring established racers like Raghul Rangasamy, Kolkata’s Arya Singh, who last year won the Formula LGB 1300 championship, Karminder Singh, the 2017 VW Ameo Cup champion, Karting graduates Yash Aradhya and Nayan Chatterjee, besides Sandeep Kumar, the 2017 first runner-up.

Chairman of the MMSC championship Vicky Chandhok said: “At this juncture, we must appreciate and acknowledge MRF’s long and committed association with motorsport in India, be it rallying or racing or motocross. It is thanks to MRF that we are able to run the racing championships, both cars and bikes, as they supply top quality tyres for all participants. Participation in motorsport has also helped MRF to develop World-class tyres as could be gauged from their success in the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship and now the World Rally Championship. Also, as title sponsors, MRF Tyres have helped Indian motorsport to grow and thrive.”

The weekend card also includes the ever-popular saloon cars that will be competing in three categories – the premier Indian Touring Cars, the Indian Junior Touring Cars and the Super Stock besides the Esteem Cup – and the Formula LGB 1300 which, like MRF F1600, joins the National championship from this round.

The ITC grid has been considerably strengthened as two Coimbatore veterans 54-year old Narayanaswamy Leelakrishnan (ARKA Motor Sports) and Arjun Balu (Race Concepts), 43, both former champions, have thrown their hats in the ring. Leelakrishnan, who returned to racing after a gap of 17 years in 2011, sat out the 2017 season while Balu is staging a comeback after a lapse of five years.

In the first round in February this year, Bengaluru’s Ashish Ramaswamy (ARKA Motor Sports) won two of the three races to tally 50 points and will be looking to consolidate, though the competition will be far stiffer this time.

Volkswagen Motorsport India has finalised 19 new drivers who will take part in the 2018 Volkswagen Ameo Cup. All the VW Ameo cars will be fitted with MRF tyres. The list for the upcoming season includes two female drivers while Yash Ojha from Lucknow is the youngest on the grid at just 19 years. Like last year, there is one entry from Bangladesh who will lend the event an international flavour.

The Ameo Cup champion will be decided over 10 races during the season and there will be two categories, Pro and Junior. At the end of the season, the winner of the Ameo Cup Pro class will get a sponsored drive in a higher category of racing, while the winner of the Junior category will be offered a sponsored drive in the next season of the Ameo Cup.

As per the schedule, Friday has been set aside for practice sessions followed by qualifying and races the following two days.
