Jan Kopecky beats Gaurav Gill as MRF takes another 1-2 finish

An MRF image New Caledonia, 18 May 2014: Team MRF Skoda driver and European Rally Champion Jan Kopecky beat team-mate Gaurav Gill to win Round 2 of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) in New Caledonia. Both MRF Skoda drivers were under investigation for postponing the start of Stage 13 as what they thought were unsafe conditions but both escaped with light penalties. Gill was comfortably leading yesterday before an accident caused him suspension damage. After two rounds, Kopecky and Gill are joint leaders with almost nothing to choose from them.
Driving the Team MRF Skoda Fabia S2000, Kopecky was in the driver’s seat with a 5 min lead heading into day 2. 2 stages were cancelled on Saturday, and SS12 was cancelled this morning. Then news came that the last 3 stages would also not run as conditions were so bad that the safety car also could not get through. Both drivers felt the conditions were impossible to drive in and hence requested for safer conditions before resuming.
2013 European Rally Champion Jan Kopecky admitted he has happy for the rally to finish after driving in very tough conditions. He said, “I am happy to have my first win of the season and the Team MRF Tyres Skoda team have been great in really tough conditions. I have to say I didn’t enjoy my driving so much, with so much mud. One stage I liked it was in the North, more like a proper stage, the rest was like driving over the fields in the mud, I didn’t enjoy so much. Our gap (today) was quite huge, so I didn’t want to make a mistake. There was no pressure and I was relaxed in the car, there was one stage in the North I enjoyed and each time I was able to go quicker than Gaurav, so it was good for us. We are now on equal points with Gaurav, that’s good for championship. If you have a close battle from the start its always better. Next is Australia – I’ve never been there, so a new country, a new rally we are looking forward to it.”
Defending champion Gill rued the fact that his mistake yesterday cost him the win but was happy to salvage 2nd place. He commented, “We had a good lead and a health margin, but unfortunately we got caught out by the conditions yesterday and found a tree on the exit of a corner, wasn’t so good for the car and we bent a suspension arm. Glenn (Macneall) and I had to do some repairs, the drive the last stage very conservatively. We’re happy to finished the day yesterday and today fastest of the day, so maximum points in the kitty – the best I could have done.”
Jan Kopecky and his Team MRF Skoda team next head to Australia on equal points (to be confirmed) with his team-mate Gaurav Gill in second. Many stages were cancelled after heavy rain made the roads impossible. The next round of the 2014 APRC is the International Rally of Queensland which will take place next month. Full bonus points will apply as the event had reached the required threshold. Last year 5 stages were cancelled on the final day, again after torrential rain.

Jan Kopecky takes lead as Gaurav Gill hits trouble: APRC
New Caledonia, 17 May 2014: Team MRF Tyres Skoda driver and European Rally Champion Jan Kopecky stormed into a comfortable lead in Round 2 of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) in New Caledonia. Defending champion Gaurav Gill suffered a suspension failure which cost him any chance of fighting for the lead.
Czech driver Jan Kopecky and co driver Pravel Dresler have a lead of 5min20 sec over team mate Gill after Day 1 of Rally New Caledonia. Gill pulled out a 52 second lead until SS7 where he dropped 1min 40sec then a further 3min 40sec on the final stage of the day with suspension failure. Despite dropping so much time Gill holds onto second place for the MRF Rally Team with a 10 minute buffer over third place Sanjay Takale. Gill managed to get his car to the service tent with the mechanics confident of getting the car ready for tomorrow.
Overnight rain and further showers today made the 2 shorter inland stages very muddy and in many places almost impossible to drive. This created a day of attrition with 6 of the starters failing to finish the day. Both Australian APRC competitors Mark Pedder and Tom Wilde ended up off the road. The conditions became very tough forcing the organisers to cancel SS5 & SS8.

Team MRF Tyres’ Gaurav Gill all set for New Caledonia
New Caledonia, 16 May 2014: Team MRF Tyres Skoda driver and defending champion Gaurav Gill will return to New Caledonia this weekend for Round 2 of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). Gill, who won at New Caledonia last year, will be joined by European Rally Champion and Team MRF Tyres Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecký from the Czech Republic, as the two drivers are all set to resume their battle in the Skoda Fabia S2000.
The MRF team driver line-up is impressive featuring both the current APRC Champion Gaurav Gill and Czech driver Jan Kopecky European Champion. Last month in New Zealand, the MRF Rally drivers made the perfect start finishing 1-2 in the first round. Indian rallying champ Gaurav Gill took the honours after a 23 sec deficit on day 1 to win by 11 secs.
With both drivers closely matched and MRF Rally tyres ideal for New Caledonia conditions, Skoda factory backed cars prepared by Race Torque engineering are confident heading into Round 2.
Although twice a previous winner here, two of the stages are relatively new to Gill having been cancelled last year because of rain. So for a greater part it is a level playing field with team mate Jan Kopecky who showed in New Zealand he was extremely competitive by leading for over half of the rally distance.
Gaurav Gill was optimistic after winning last year. He commented, “I am thrilled to be back in New Caledonia with the MRF Tyres Skoda team. The stages will be slightly different this year with the roads been made wider and smoother and in most places it’s going to be faster than last year. Hopefully it will be dry this year. In New Caledonia it is important not to push too hard, it can be very tough on both drivers and cars and as the saying goes, first you must finish. Experience has taught me we don’t try to go faster we need to be more precise”.
New Caledonia is nestled in the South West Pacific and surrounded by the most beautiful tropical lagoons however venture inland and you will find the rugged interior roads that can catch out even the most experienced driver
The rally course is situated 50 kilometres to the north of the capital Noumea on mining and rural roads. There is 235 km of high speed tests broken down into 17 stages, 3 stages repeated 3 times on Saturday and the course run again in reverse on Sunday.
While the weather is normally fine and the temperature a balmy 25c this time of the year, rain can have a significant impact turning parts of the course into a skating rink.

Gaurav Gill and Team MRF Skoda to defend APRC title
Chennai, 5 March 2014: 2013 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) winner and MRF driver Gaurav Gill on Thurs

An Adrenna Communications photo day confirmed that he and co-driver Glenn Macneall will defend their title with the Team MRF ŠKODA Fabia S2000 for the 2014 championship. Gill became the first Indian to win the prestigious APRC title and more importantly won it using MRF Tyres, adding yet another title to the leading Indian tyre manufacturer.
Team MRF Skoda will field two teams again with European Rally Championship winners Jan Kopecky and Pavel Dresler in the other car, an Adrenna Communications release said here on Thursday.
Gill was the first Indian to win the overall title but it was Sanjay Takale who won his class to become the first Indian APRC winner in any class.
Team MRF will be hoping to continue on their near perfect season last year, where they won five of the six APRC rounds throughout the season and totally dominated the championship. Team MRF will also be gunning for their third successive title after winning in 2012 with Chris Atkinson and 2013 with Gaurav Gill.
MRF is no stranger to APRC after being regular participants for over a decade. MRF is the only Indian Tyre manufacturer who develops rally tyres that are used internationally. The MRF R&D team work closely with the drivers to develop tyres for the different terrains and conditions. The MRF Tyres are prepared for all surfaces and conditions.

Enroute to his 2013 APRC title, Gill took victories in the New Calendonian and Japanese rounds of the championship, while finishing second in New Zealand and China. His team-mate Esapekka Lappi, in his first APRC campaign, won three times, in China, New Zealand and Australia, but non-finishes in the other three events put him out of the championship running.
Gaurav Gill, who became the first Indian to win an FIA Championship was excited to defend his title. He commented “Firstly I would like to thank MRF and Skoda for their continuous commitment and support. We had a great season where we created history last year but now our focus is squarely on this year. I will be working much closer with the MRF R&D team as well to ensure we have the best possible tyres. These guys are capable of developing tyres to match the best in the world and together we hope to achieve this. We will not rest on our laurels and will continue to push to ensure that we are fighting for the title again.”
In 2014 six events make-up the championship starting in New Zealand in April with the fast and smooth roads at Rally of Whangarei. A month later is the tropical island paradise and rough roads of New Caledonia followed by Australia’s Sunshine Coast and the International Rally of Queensland. The APRC then heads to Asia to the very hot and humid Malaysian Rally based in Johor Bahru. Japan is next and the fast forestry and public roads of Rally Hokkaido, followed by the championship finale in the bamboo forests and mountains of Zhejiang province, China.
It will be big challenge for the European Rally Champion Jan Kopecký, known to be more of a tarmac specialist, and will have to adapt to the challenges of gravel surfaces. He commented, “It will be something special for me – new rallies, new territories and lot of them real exotic ones, and most importantly it will be completely different racing conditions. It will be great, I’m looking forward to working together with my co-driver Pavel Dresler. We had a fantastic season in 2013 and we look to continue that form with Team MRF Skoda this year as well. We have a good car, great team and perfect team-mate! And I hope Gaurav will give us lot good tips as well“.

Gaurav Gill wins INRC season opener at Nashik

Nashik, 5 June 2011: It was a cake walk for speed demon Gaurav Gill of Team MRF (codriver Musa Sherif) as he had to drive only 72.32 kms of special stages on tarmac out of the total of 351.22 kms including transport section to win the season opener Rally of Maharashtra, the first round of the Speed Indian National Rally Championship. The rally run on Super Rally format over three special stages run twice on Saturday and once each on Sunday made for thrilling spectacle and provided a daunting task for the drivers.
With only 5 entires generated in the top 2000N+ class, it was a facile win for Gaurav Gill who was already on top on the first day with a huge difference of over 6 minutes over his teammate Lohith Urs. The absence of Red Rooster Racing had brought down the competition level of the rally. However, the competition was high despite the less number of competitors and the an incident-packed day saw a lot of crashes. Arjun Balu and co-driver Sujit Kumar who had multiple flat tyre and later failed to cope up with the suspension problem crashed against a giant tree in the fourth special stage became the first casualty followed by Ashwin Gowda and co-driver Anoop Kumar who had a miraculous escape as they misjudged a curve and overshoot the barriers to take deep dive into 300 feet gorge. After rolling over for at least 14 times they were lucky to be stopped by a tree from a further drop of over 100 feet straight into a rocky water surface. “But for the safe roll-cage that is mandatory in the National championship for all cars, I would not have survived,” said a shattered Anoop Kumar after the rally. Even as his driver Ashwin Gowda, was recuperating in the ambulance he added in jest, “Going down was easy! Walking up the hill was more dehydrating.’’ Hats off to the doctor, who went all the way down in no time and ensured that both the drivers are safely out of the car!

Photo by Kishen Nanjappa for IMG-PSP Castrol supported AR Racing team driver Arjun Rao Aroor along with his co-driver Satish Rajgopal who were running second, though not closer enough to Gaurav, experienced power steering brakdown reached the service bay safely but were not able to overcome the problem and dropped out before SS5.
Amittrajit Ghosh with his co-driver Ashwin Naik after these two major incidents had moved up to second place just behind the leader Gaurav Gill and co-driver Musa Sheriff, but their joy was short-lived as their car stalled just three kilometers before the final stage finish.
With three out of the five cars out, it was Lohit Urs with his co-driver Srinivas Murthy who finished second in the class.
Editor of Overdrive Sirish Chandran with co-driver Nikhil Pai topped the 2000N category with a comfortable margin and filled in the gap as overall third as there were only two cars remaining in 2000N+. He was followed by Shailander Hegde and co-driver Prajwal Pai in second position and in the third place were Rahul Kanthraj and co-driver Vivek Bhatt in the N class.
In Group 1600 cc after the crash of Ashwin Gowda, Aniruddha Rangnekar and co-driver Anjay Kapadia topped the table with a very comfortable margin of over 22 minutes over Vignesh Devarajan and Mukesh Raja.
In the 1400 cc Star Cup, it was Raghu Nandan B with co-driver Sujay Prasad with a timing of 01:04:52 on top followed by Deepak Chetty with co-driver Uday Kumar who clocked 1:06:15. Hrishikesh Thackersey with co-driver Kaushik H Shinde (1:09:00.0) were third.
In the Gypsy class, the leader was the vetran driver from Bangalore Sanjay Agarwal with co-driver Jeeva Rathinam with a timing of 01:06:28.0 followed by Sachin Singh and co-driver Ramesh Venu (01:07:23.0) in second place and Ranjiv Sally and co-driver Faruk Patel (1:10:24.0) in third.
The other casualties of the day were Kochi’s veteran Sob George and a young co-driver Vineeth Vincent Tom in the 1400 cc class. He failed to negotiate a culvert before a hairpin and nosedived into the pit while in the 1600 cc category Siddharth Rangnekar with co-driver Halley Prabhakar went off the road into a field and halted on top of a small rock. The incident-filled day saw only 19 cars finish Day 1. Gaurav Gill further extended his lead upto 8.03 min after clocking the fastest time in first stage of the second day, but also gave an opportunity to his team mates Lohit Urs and Amitrajit Ghosh to do some of the fastest timings. In the 2000N category there was no change in the positions from the day one. The same places were retained after the second day leader was Sirish Chandran followed by Shailande Hegde and Rahul Kanthraj. It was the similar case in the 1600cc class Pune driver Anirudha Rangnekar of Chettinad Sporting finished ahead of Vignesh Devarajan. In the 1400 cc Star Cup It was a first and second finish for Team Ideal as Raghu Nandan B paired with co-driver Sujay Prasad won the class , Deepak Chetty had Uday as co-driver finished second while Hrishikesh Thackersay and co-driver Kaushik Shinde came third. Veteran rally driver Sanjay Agarwal with Jeeva Rathinam both from Bengaluru driving a modified Gypsy with a Baleno engine were placed first. In Gypsy cup N & T2 Sachin Singh and co-driver Venu Ramesh won with a time of 1 hour 40 min, 34 seconds, while Ranjiv Sally and co-driver Farook Patel came second followed by Shafeeq ur Rahman in the third spot. Of the 27 cars that started, only 18 finished the rally.

Gaurav Gill-Musa Sherif begin with a bang at Nashik

Nashik, 27 June 2010: Speed devil Gaurav Gill and co-driver Musa Sherif began with a bang and put Team MRF on the top winning the opening event of the Speed Indian National Rally Championship as they displayed controlled aggression with a comfortable lead in hand and won the Rally of Maharashtra with ease at the Dadasaheb Phalke Smarak here on Sunday.
The spectacular speeds at the spectator spectacle unfolded at the crowded Phalke Smarak and for once Gill had to control his speed an make sure the car does not play truant like last year. However, he did not shy away from entertaining the crowd with his drifts sliding down the corners without lifting off the gas. In the course, it was Red Rooster’s Vikram Mathias, last year’s winner here, who zoomed to the best timing in the Super Special Stage came out trumps in 1 minute 48.4 seconds, a clear 3.1 seconds faster than Gill but had to be content with the second place in his Mitsubishi Cedia with co-driver PVS Murthy. Kolkata’s Amittrajit Ghosh and Aswin Naik also of Team Red Rooster Racing took the third place on the podium in the inaugural event..
“It was a grand opening round for me and my team MRF. Finally, I got the monkey off my back and broke the Nashik jinx,” was how a relieved National champion Gill reacted. At the same venue last year, Gill’s car stalled soon after the start and was out of the competition. Gill never won at Nashik till today morning.
“We went in with a different set-up today and I was more intent on doing some drifts just to give the spectators something to cheer about. Overall, it was a good outing for us and we had no problems with the car,” said Gill as he busied himself to leave for New Zealand for the Asia Pacific Rally championship commencing next weekend.
In the 2000cc N category, Girijashankar Joshy and co-driver Chandramouli won the first title in the season for Team Ovion in its debut race with a timing of 1hr 29:46.5secs. Teammates Sujay Suresh and Varun Sathyanarayan made it a one-two for team Ovion while Sirish Chandran and Nikhil Pai came third.
Bangalore duo, Rahul Kantharaj with Vivek Bhat navigating in the 1600cc notched up an authoritative win over Shailender Hegde/Shiraz Ahmed. “We are very happy to launch our campaign with a win in,’’ said Rahul while Vivek said: “It was a daunting rally for the navigator with a lot of blind corners. The first day was slushy but otherwise it was a good rally with a lot calls. We enjoyed it.’’
Overnight leaders Dr Bikku Babu and co-driver Gerorge Varghese of Kerala won the 1400cc class while Byram Godrej/Anjay Kapadia came second. Monish-Jeeva pair took the third place.
Amrinder Brar and co-driver Himanshu Pareek put paid to the hopes of Sachin Singh/Adhiraj Bhardan pair in their Gypsy while Shakti Bajaj and Dharmesh duo finished third.
In the Rally Star Car category, Mysore pair Phalguna V Urs and Anoop Kumar made sure of their first title of the season with a comfortable edging out Coimbatore pair Venkatapathy/Santosh Kumar. VS Ratan and Preetham came third.

Gill regains Speed INRC title

Chikmagalur, 21 Nov 2009: Speed demon Gaurav Gill and co-driver Musa Sherif of Team MRF clinched the Speed Indian National Rally Championship for the year 2009 winning the Coffee Day Rally of Chikmagalur, the fifth and final round of the Speed INRC which saw a Red sweep as Team MRF won the top three places here on Sunday.
Excitement was at its feverish pitch as fancied Gaurav Gill kept his poise to pocket his second National championship title as the curtains came down on the Coffee Day Rally. With a comfortable lead in the first leg, Gill left his characteristic speed dashes and did not go all out. He displayed controlled aggression and was content to be second fastest today with the title in mind. Though the official declaration is expected on Nov 28 on the pending protests, Gill is unlikely to be affected as he has an insurmountable 46 points.
Twentyeight-year-old Gill, who won the National Title under the colours of MRF two years ago, did an encore and promptly thanked the support. “I am happy to have done the job but the prime reason has been the perfect tyres. Today my gearbox stuck in the final stage but I wriggled out without shifting the gears thanks to my lead.”

An INDIAinF1 image It turned out to be MRF’s day with Lohith Urs (co-driver Sikanth Gowda) and Arjun Rao Aroor (Satish Rajagopal) doing just about enough to take the second and third placings respectively. Lohith gave Gill a close run and in fact was fastest in all the stages but lost 3 minutes due to a penalty for early arrival. “I am happy that it turned out to be Gaurav’s day as he had been the most consistent here. In my view, the good show has been due to the experimentation in the vehicles and the solidity of the tyres even in slushy conditions,” said Lohith. Their job was made easy as Red Rooster Racing drivers Vikram Mathias and Amittrajit Ghosh did not finish.
Girijashankar Joshy (Chandramouli M) won the 1600cc category with a time of 1 hr 42 min 26 seconds pushing Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Bhat) and Joseph C Jos (Royce Kizhakoodan) to second and third places respectively but it was Sujay S who earned a leg point today and won the National title in this class with 50 points. Joseph Jos and Rahul Kanthraj finished second and third in the National championship.
In the 1400 cc class, Vikram Devadasan (Nikhil Pai) won with a time of 1 hour 44 min, 57 seconds while Ahijeet N Pai (Satvik GA) finished second and Deepak Chinnappa (Chandrashekar) third. Vikram Devadasan won the National title with 54 points and Nikhil Pai, his Navigator won the Co-Drivers’ Championship. Francis K Jose (Manoj M) who finished fourth today bagged five points to take second place in the National championship. Dr Bikku Babu, who had 14 points before this rally, just managed to push Deepak Chinnappa (13) by one point. Deepak came third here to garner 7 points but the third place in the National Championship.
Karna Kadur had the taste of a National title in the Rally Star Cup. The greenhorn said it has been a learning ground complementing the good work of his navigator Somonita Ghosh, sister of the young racing talent Amittrajit Ghosh. Kadur finished sixth in this rally to earn three valuable points and being the fastest today he added three more leg points which helped him to win the National title with 52 points ahead of Balram CG (Raghuram CG) who won the rally here but fell short by two points for the national title. Phalguna Urs finished third in this rally to ensure his third place in the INRC with 45 points. Karan AM (Somaiah AG) were second today.

Kushwant (49) enjoyed a narrow three point lead over Sandeep (46) before the start of this rally. Sandeep garnered all the 16 points here to take his tally to 62 while Kushwant could only get 12 and missed out with a total of 61 points.
