Budapest, 24 July 2016: Lewis Hamilton took a fifth career Hungarian Grand Prix victory ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to rise above the German in the Drivers’ Championship standings for the first time this season.

Hamilton seized the lead from pole sitter Rosberg at the race start, making a better getaway than his team-mate and attacking down the inside as they made their way into Turn One. Rosberg, meanwhile, was coming under pressure from a fast-starting Daniel Riccirado and as the Red Bull driver made a move around the outside and Hamilton took up space on the inside, Rosberg was forced to lift. Ricciardo stole into second place but Rosberg managed to retrieve the position as the pair went through Turn Two.

Hamilton, though, was away in the lead and across the next 70 laps the defending champion put in a controlled performance, managing the gap back to Rosberg with ease to eventually claim his fifth Hungarian Grand Prix win. The victory makes him the most successful driver ever at the Hungaroring as he passes the record he held jointly with Michael Schumacher.

“The start was everything,” said Hamilton. “I got a good start. I had one of the Red Bulls was on the inside of me, so I was pressured quite a lot into Turn One. But the team did a fantastic job with the strategy, preparing the car as always, the guys back at the factory continuing to push flat out, so a huge thank you to them, because this is a great result as a team, so yeah, what a day!

Of his own start, Rosberg said: “I lost out a little bit and then into Turn One, with Daniel on the outside, Lewis on the inside, I ran out of space, so I had to bail out. That was it really. I was happy to take Daniel back in Turn Two and from then I was trying to put all the pressure possible on Lewis but of course it’s not possible to pass on this track.”

The win leaves Hamilton six points ahead of his team-mate as the season heads towards Rosberg’s home race, next weekend’s German Grand Prix, the final race before F1’s summer break.

The race could prove a crucial one in the battle for the Constructors’ crown too. While Mercedes top the manufacturers’ standings by a considerable margin, the battle for second is a tight one between Ferrari and Red Bull Racing and third and fifth places this afternoon for Red Bull ahead of Ferrari’s fourth and sixth places means the Milton Keynes team now heads to Germany just a single point adrift of their rivals from Maranello.

Both Red Bull drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, had to battle hard to hold on to their final places however.

In the closing stages Ricciardo came under pressure from Sebastian Vettel, and though the gap between the two at the chequered flag was just 0.6s, the Australian always looked assured of his third Hungarian Grand Prix podium finish in a row.

“It’s great to have another podium this year. Obviously the first one [in Monaco] was a bit bittersweet but this one I can definitely enjoy and for sure the smile’s back. Super happy to be here today. It’s three years in a row I’ve been on the podium at this circuit. It’s been good to me.”

Verstappen, though, had a real fight on his hands in the final quarter of the race.

The Dutch driver made his final pit stop, for soft tyres, on lap 39 and slotted in behind Kimi Raikkonen who was on a different strategy and who had made impressive progress from 14th on the grid. Raikkonen then pitted on lap 50, taking on a set of supersofts tyres. He rejoined behind Verstappen but armed with fresher, faster tyres he soon closed the gap to the Red Bull driver and began to put the youngster 18-year-old sensation under intense pressure.

As he had done to the Finn when taking his maiden win in Spain, however, Verstappen defended expertly, gapping the Finn in the final sector to eradicate the influence of DRS and the making his car as wide as possible through the opening corners to keep the Ferrari man at bay until the flag.

With Raikkonen sixth, seventh place went to Fernando Alonso, who took the place at the start by passing Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz. The six points earned by Alonso will be welcomed by McLaren but it might have neen more had eigth-on-the-grid Jenson Button not suffered a loss of hydraulic pressure early on. He soldiered on but an oil leak eventually led him to retire form P19 after 60 laps.

The Briton was also incensed by a drive-through penalty applied for an unauthorised radio communication. The 2009 champion questioned the sanction as he insisted that his message that his brake pedal was “going to the floor” and the response it elicited was a safety issue.

Sainz took a solid eighth place and four points, a useful return on a day when chief Constructors’ Championship rivals Force India managed to take just one point, with Nico Hulkenberg finishing behind ninth-placed Valtteri Bottas.

Double podium for Armaan in Thailand

Buriram (Thailand), 24 July 2006: India’s Armaan Ebrahim along with Sri Lankan Dilantha Malagamuwa notched a fine double in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series here this weekend.

In the double header, Armaan and Malagamuwa, driving team Dilantha Racing, finished third in the first race on Saturday and went one better on Sunday with a second place finish.

Armaan had qualified second for the first race, just a tenth off the pole position while Dilantha, suffering from an indisposition, was placed sixth for the second outing.

Armaan was off a fine start and went into the lead exiting

Turn-1 and maintained the one-second advantage till he pitted for Dilantha to take over.

Dilantha, however, lost one spot and eventually finished third which was creditable considering that the Sri Lankan was on drips going into the weekend due to food poisoning.

In the second race, Dilantha, feeling much better, jumped two spots to move into fourth and gained another place when the car in front ran wide. After the mandatory pit-stop, Armaan took over and put in some blistering laps to move into second spot, but could not make any progress as he had too much a gap to make up.

Reflecting on his weekend, Armaan said: “We were a bit unfortunate in the first race after I came in when in the lead as Dilantha had not fully recovered from food poisoning that had him on the drips. Considering this, we were happy to finish second.

“In race two, Dilantha had to start since he qualified and luckily was feeling better. He got a good start and moved into fourth and after a couple of laps of applying pressure.

The car in front of him ran wide allowing him to get through.

“Dilantha held third for the rest of his stint, but the gap to the leaders was considerably huge. Once I got in, I had to drive like a quali and managed to catch the car in P2 and pass him. I started making time on the leader, but the gap was too big and we ran out of time which meant we finished a strong second.”

Another podium for Armaan: Super Trofeo Asia Series

SUZUKA, 12 June 2006: India’s ace racer Armaan Ebrahim and Sri Lankan team-mate Dilantha Malagamuwa bagged a third place podium spot before a blown engine forced retirement in the next race of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series double header here over the weekend.

Armaan, supported by JK Tyre and driving for Dilango Racing team, qualified second for the first race on Saturday and looked set to maintain position. However, the team lost one spot after the mandatory pit-stop when Armaan handed over the car to Malagamuwa to complete the remainder of the race.

On Sunday, in the second race for which the team had qualified ninth, Malagamuwa started and made four places to move into fifth when the engine blew leading to retirement, 20 minutes into the race.

Armaan, who is among five Asians included in the Young Drivers Program of Lamborghini Squadra Corse, and Malagamuwa had finished second in both races of the first round in Shanghai, China, last month.

Commenting on the weekend, Chennai-based Armaan, said: “Obviously, we are very disappointed with what happened in the second race, but at least we managed to pick up some points from our podium finish in the first.

“On Saturday, I qualified second for the first race and Dilantha ninth for the second race. I was running second in the first race at the change-over and we finished third eventually.

“In the second race, Dilantha did well to move to fifth after starting ninth on the grid, but the engine blew and that was the end of it for us here.

“We now head to Buriram, Thailand, for the next round in July (23-24) and hopefully, have a better run there.”

Double Podium for Armaan Ebrahim in Shanghai

Armaan Ebrahim with trophies (Shanghai)Shanghai (China), May 22: India’s Armaan Ebrahim, along with Sri Lankan team-mate Dilantha Malagamuwa, started his campaign in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series on a bright note by finishing second in both the races here on Sunday.

Having qualified second for the first race, 27-year old Chennai-based Armaan, supported by JK Tyre and driving for Dilantha Racing, was quick off the blocks and soon took the lead, but could not push any more as he encountered problems with the brakes and dropped to second, a position he held to the finish line.

In the next race, Dilantha who had qualified sixth, opened the proceedings and quickly moved to the third spot. However, he was hit from behind which cost him track positions. He soon pitted for Armaan to take over.

In the next race, Dilantha who had qualified sixth, opened the proceedings and quickly moved to the third spot. However, he was hit from behind which cost him track positions. He soon pitted for Armaan to take over.

Armaan made positions to move into second place, but could not make headway thereafter and opted to hold position to complete a successful weekend.

Reflecting on his performance, Armaan said: “We could have probably won both the races, but not a bad way to start the championship. I am happy to have points in the bag. We had a few issues with the car, but overall, it was a good weekend.

“The qualifying sessions on Saturday were in the wet. However, it was cloudy but dry today. In the first race, I had a problem with the brakes when leading and conceded the lead. I decided to settle for second place.

“In the second race, Dilantha started in sixth position and was running third when he got tapped from behind. We decided to pit him early and I took over. I made a few places, but eventually had to be satisfied with a second.

“I am coming out of a long off-season, nearly six months, but was happy I could settle down. It is a long season as we finish only in December. So, we will take it race by race. I look forward to the next round in Suzuka, Japan, next month (June 11-12) and build on the momentum.”

  • Armaan second in Lamborghini series

Sebring (Florida – USA), 21 Nov 2015: India’s Armaan Ebrahim ended the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series on a high as he finished second in the championship after earning podium and fourth position in the concluding round’s double-header at the historic Sebring International Raceway here on Friday.

Armaan, the 26-year old from Chennai along with his Sri Lankan team-mate Dilantha Malagamuwa, came up with two stunning drives while overcoming gearbox issues which led to a pitlane start for the second race as the duo picked up valuable points to finish creditable second in the championship.

Armaan, the JK Tyre Brand Ambassador, will be participating in the Super Trofeo World Final, a double-header that will conclude on Sunday at the same venue.

Despite the late arrival of the car, Armaan and Dilantha qualified third for both the races, but gearbox problems plagued them through the day while denying them a possible higher finishes.

As part of strategy, Dilantha went out first in Race One, but he struggled with an errant gearbox before handing over the car to Armaan who drove a brilliant second half of the race to come in third.

Amraan all but missed the second race as the team decided to change the gearbox. The work was still in progress when the rest of the cars lined up on the start grid. However, providence smiled on Armaan by way of rains which delayed the start while forcing the cars back to the pits for a change of tyres. The delay provided just enough time for Amraan’s car to be readied for a pitlane start. The pair then carved through the field to finish fourth.

Summing up the final round of the series, Armaan said: “Our car arrived only at 5 am on Thursday. So, there was literally no time to do any work on the car. The three Free Practice sessions went off quite decently for us and we qualified third for both races.

“In Race One, we went with a different strategy and sent out Dilantha first. Right from the start, we had a gearbox problem with inconsistent shifts and sometimes, loss of gears. Soon as the pit window was open, we made our stop. I got in and made my way up to third.

“Our gears were getting worse as it even struggled to go up the box and not only down. The race finished behind safety car which came out with 10 minutes left.

“Race Two was even more stressful. After the first race, by the time the car came into the garage from Parc Ferme, we had lost a bit of time. It was decided that the gearbox needed to be changed. At first, it looked like we will miss the race, but thanks to God literally, as it strated raining when the rest of the field was on the grid.

“The rains forced a delay in the start and the whole field had to get back to the pits to change tyres. This brought us loads of time and we still only just made for a pitlane start. It meant, we had to get through again and we did most of it to finish fourth.”

  • Armaan Ebrahim pairs with Lankan teammate to finish third overall in Trofeo Asia series in Shanghai

Shanghai, 17 October 2015: India’s Armaan Ebrahim finished third overall along with teammate for another podium and finished second in Pro-Am class in the fifth and concluding round of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series, here on Saturday.

Chennai-based Armaan along with his Sri Lankan partner Dilantha Malagamuwa qualified third Overall and second in the Pro-Am class for the first race of the weekend.

Going out first, Armaan did well to hold his grid position till he came in to hand over the car to Dilantha. The Sri Lankan also managed to maintain the position to come in third.

However, with the race winner Afiq from Malaysia not classified as he drove without a partner, Armaan and Dilantha were placed second which fetched the pair 12 crucial points that put them third in the championship, just four adrift of the second spot and nine behind the leader.

Armaan had a good run in the qualifying session as he put in his fastest lap and looked set to improve in the next loop, but ran into traffic.

Armaan made a good start in the race to keep pace with the front runners while opening a sizeable gap to the car behind him. After the change-over, Dilantha was under pressure and lost a place, but recovered well to regain the position.

Reflecting on his performance, Armaan said: “In the first qualifying session which decides where we start in the first race, I did my fastest lap on my first flyer. The next lap should have been the lap, but I was blocked. Nevertheless, I was happy with P3, just three-tenths off the pace.

“The race start was ok. I ran through with the leaders and opened a gap to the guy in fourth. After the pitstop, Dilantha was under some pressure and actually lost a place, but did well to fight back and regain the position.”

  • Podium for Armaan Ebrahim at Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series

SENTUL (INDONESIA): India’s Armaan Ebrahim and his Sri Lankan partner Dilantha Malagamuwa notched their second consecutive podium finish as the pair were placed third in the first of the two races of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series at the Sentul International Circuit, here on Sunday.

JK Tyre Brand Ambassador Armaan and Dilantha, who had finished third in the previous round at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, put in a fine performance in the first race of the weekend for a podium spot after starting 10th on the grid.

Going into the fourth round, Armaan and Dilantha were placed second on the championship leaderboard and had hoped for a strong showing to take back the lead.

However, their weekend was off to a disastrous start as Dilantha had a bad crash in the opening laps in the first practice session. Consequently, Armaan missed both the practice sessions and most of the Qualifying se

ssion as the car had suffered extensive damage.

Starting 10th in Race 1, Armaan took the start and drove at a frenetic pace, making eight places and moved up to second before handing over the car to Dilantha.

Dilantha dropped one position towards the end of the race due to a problematic gearbox and the team took the chequered flag in third position which earned valuable points as well.

Armaan took the start again for Race 2 from fifth on the grid. He got off to a storming start and half way through the race, had moved up to second place overall before Dilantha took over.

With just two laps to go for a strong second place finish, disaster struck when the rear right tyre blew, forcing Dilantha to drop down the order.

Reflecting on the weekend, Armaan said: “Coming away with a third placed Podium was definitely a consolation after a disastrous start to the race weekend.

“It was unfortunate that Dilantha lost traction in the first practice session and suffered a big crash which damaged the car badly. Missing out on both the practice sessions and most of Qualifying meant that I had to go into the race blind.

“Nevertheless, it was a good race as I had a very good race pace and we were able to come away with a podium position.

“Race 2 was extremely disappointing as we had done all the hard work and were comfortably placed in second position before Dilantha took over. With just two laps to go for the chequered flag, the rear tyre deflated and Dilantha lost track position to finish 11th.”

“We now look forward to the next race in Shanghai in October and hopefully Lady Luck will smile on us and we can take back the Championship lead.”

  • ‘The Flying Taurus’ is at it again; FIA F-2 beckons popular star Ajith

‘The Flying Taurus’ is at it again; FIA F-2 beckons popular star Ajith

Ajith Kumar all geared up. INDIAinF1 file photo

We at India in F1.com know him best as the Flying Taurus! The South Indian film star and motor racing enthusiast, Ajith Kumar is all set to take part in this year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship. This will be his third season in International racing. After his 2003 Debut in the Formula BMW Asia Championship, where he qualified 4th and finished 6th for his best result in the Korean leg, he entered the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class in 2004, where he scored two podium finishes.

Chennai, 24 March 2010: South Indian film star and motor racing enthusiast, Ajith Kumar is all set to take part in this year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship. This will be his third season in International racing after his 2003 Debut in the Formula BMW Asia Championship, where his best results were in Korea (Qualified 4th and finished 6th) and the 2004 races in British Formula 3 Scholarship Class, where he scored two podium finishes.

Ajith feels that the time is ripe for providing a much-needed impetus to the motor racing scene in India considering a few interesting developments in the sporting activity. While ace driver Narain Karthikeyan was the first Indian to get into Formula 1, he is now closely followed by Karun Chandhok who is racing in Formula 1 this year. In Formula 2, apart from Ajith Kumar, there are two other Indians in the fray – Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaran. All this, Ajith feels, will induce more Indian youngsters to take to the sport. In the Indian racing scene, apart from the established JK Tyre series, in recent times, we have seen MRF also entering with their own Formula racing series. Volkswagen is introducing a new series of saloon car racing with its Polo cars.

“I have the confidence of achieving some success in this year’s FIA Formula 2 European Championships. I have already done some testing in Malaysia recently and am looking forward to more practice runs in Snetterton & Silverstone before the event kicks off on April 16th. I hope my participation along with the other two Indians, Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaran will create the right amount of interest in the sport in India,” says Ajith Kumar.

F2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer said: “I am delighted to welcome Ajith to F2. To have a well known Indian film star who has demonstrated such ambition now racing in F2 is very exciting for the championship, and I really admire Ajith’s determination and enthusiasm. Paul Newman demonstrated that international celebrities can be competitive in international motorsport – and late in his career.  Ajith, on the other hand, is several years younger than both Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. The F2 team and other drivers look forward to giving maximum support to help Ajith become increasingly competitive.”

His professional approach to racing, as much as his involvement in films, is to be seen as a much-needed impetus to motorsports, especially in view of impending Formula 1 event expected to take place in India in 2011. Towards this end and based on his decision to turn a professional racer and make it a career alongside his acting profession, Ajith Kumar has hired the services of Eurasia Motorsport Management, the UK run by Piers Hunnisett to handle all his international motor racing activities and manage his racing career. Ajith’s foray into F2 would not have been possible without the help and support of Jonathan Palmer, Piers Hunnisett and Narain Karthikeyan.
