K1000 postponed due to COVID19 second wave
Bengaluru, 11 May 2021: Karnataka 1000, popularly known as K1000, scheduled to run as the second round of the Champions Yacht Club fmsci Indian National Rally Championship 2021, from May 28 to 30, was postponed due to the second wave of COVID 19 that hit Bengaluru badly. The new dates will be announced later.
With the way the pandemic is raging, the Indian Championship is expected to be stretched to the end of the year and two back-to-back rounds beginning with South India Rally are likely to be held Chennai and Bengaluru. Last year, Champions Yacht Club conducted two back-to-back rounds in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh and the calendar concluded with the third round in Coimbatore as K-1000, scheduled to be the last round, was cancelled.
The first round of the scheduled six-round National Championship this year, the MMSC South India Rally was postponed last month. The rally which attracted a record number of 73 entries was supposed to be held concurrently with the Asia Leg of the Asian Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). The third round at Coimbatore to be run by the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club, slated to be held from July 16 to 18, also looks like a non-starter.
The postponement was announced by the National body, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (fmsci) on May 11 and was confirmed by the BS Gautham, President, Karnataka Motor Sports Club (KMSC).

Campdelli-Rappa take podium for MRF Tyres: Italian Gravel Rally
26 April 2021: Team MRF Tyres has finished on the podium at Rally Adriatico with Simone Campedelli and Gianfrancesco Rappa taking the third spot in the opening round of the Italian Rally Championship – Gravel.
The Campionato Italiano Rally Terra (CIRT) which is the Italian Rally Championship – Gravel started its season at Rally Adriatico and it was the first round of the season for Team MRF Tyres for Campedelli/Rappa, Paolo Andreucci/Francesco Pinelli and Tamara Molinaro/Piercarlo Capalongo.
For Campedelli/Rappa, it was a great start to the season. They started the nine-stage, 64.71km event with a solid run to sixth on the first stage.
They were consistent on MRF Tyres throughout the event and were able to climb their way up the order. By the end of SS4, they had taken fourth place and on SS5, they were able to climb up to third.
They would hold their podium position for the rest of the rally, managing the gap to second and to fourth in the Volkswagen Polo R5.
By the end of the rally, they finished the rally with an average pace of 89.9km/h, showing a great full-season debut for MRF Tyres in the Championship.
Unfortunately for Andreucci/Pinelli, their rally would end on SS1 with a crash putting damaging their Skoda Fabia Rally 2 Evo. Fortunately, the crew was not injured but their competitive action will have to wait until the second round.
Molinaro/Capalongo showed good pace through the rally to take second in the Under 25 age category, first in the female category and 11th overall.
Their fight would be intense throughout the rally and would climb through the field to reach the top 10 throughout the day in the CIRT. The competition was tough with tight gaps throughout the field. After a tough fight, they would finish 11th and, importantly achieve their goals of taking top spots in the Under 24 and Female categories.
This result helps prove the development process for Team MRF Tyres and the intense program that has been undertaken over the past year and that will happen throughout 2021.
The team is committed to the CIRT and the FIA European Rally Championship (FIAERC). The FIAERC is due to get underway with Rally Poland in July, with the start of the series being delayed due to Covid.
The second round of the CIRT will take place on the island of Sargenda and will coincide with the World Rally Championship round from 3-4 June.

MRF Tyres to launch into Italian Gravel with three cars
Cingoli (Italy), 23 April 2021: The first round of the Campionato Italiano Rally Terra (CIRT) or the Italian Rally Championship – Gravel gets underway this weekend with the Rally Adriatico and Team MRF Tyres will be well represented with three cars at the starting line.
Rally Adriatico will be run over nine stages and 64.71km of competitive rally action on Saturday April 24. The rally is staged around Cingoli, in the Macerata region, on Italy’s mid-eastern coastline.
Italian legend, Paolo Andreucci with Francesco Pinelli will lead the charge for Team MRF Tyres in the Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. The pair had a one-off drive in the opening round of the Italian tarmac championship and moving to gravel will prove to be an exciting prospect.
Simone Campedelli and Gianfrancesco Maria Rappa are also rallying the full CIRT for Team MRF Tyres in a Volkswagen Polo R5. Campedelli and Rappa are starting their full season in the CIRT on the back of a podium in the regional, Rally Della Val d’Orcia which was held in March.
The third car on MRF Tyres is for Tamara Molinaro and Piercarlo Capolongo who will rally a Citroën C3 R5.
Molinaro rallied on MRF Tyres for the first time in 2020, taking the class victory in the Female division and second in the Under 25s.
The trio represents a mixture of youth and experience as Team MRF Tyres gets its 2021 CIRT campaign underway. The Italian Championship is ultra-competitive and will allow MRF Tyres to compete against some of the world’s best drivers while maintaining its aggressive development program.
The crews have undertaken pre-event tests in preparation for the Adriatico Rally.
The rally sees nine stages broken up into three legs of three repeated stages.
Colognola is the first stage of the loop, providing a 5.40km blast. The second stage is Panicali at 5.24km meaning that the crews will have no room for error and must be immediately on the pace. The third stage of the loop is Dei Laghi and is the longest of the three at 10.93km.
Over 90 cars are competing in the Adriatico Rally, with 39 leading Rally2 (R5) cars entered.
The rally will get underway at 7:57 local time or 11:27 if you are in India. It will run throughout the day on Saturday, with the final stage due to commence at 17:35 in Italy or 21:15 in India.

South India Rally postponed to June 23-25: INRC Round 1
Chennai, 19 April 2021: The South India Rally, a round of the 2021 Indian National Rally Championship, scheduled for April 23-25, has been postponed in the wake of fresh government restrictions due to rising number of Covid-19 virus cases, organisers Madras Motor Sports Club announced here today.
The tentative fresh dates for the event, promoted by Champions Yacht Club, and which doubled up as a round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, are June 25 to 27. The South India Rally had attracted a record 70 entries of which 21 were women crews.
Chairman of the event and MMSC Vice-President Vicky Chandhok said: “Much as the sport is always our priority, we are very concerned about the huge spike in Covid-19 cases in the recent days. With an all-time record of 70 entries of which 21 are women competitors the enthusiasm for the sport has also spiked and is at its peak! But after discussions with promoter Vamcy Merla who had put in massive efforts, we decided to postpone the South India Rally keeping in mind the safety and health of those involved in the event.”
Promoter Vamcy Merla said: “Unfortunately, in the last couple of days, a lot of restrictions have been imposed in many States due to the spike in Covid-19 cases in the country. I am in total agreement with the decision to postpone, giving due consideration to the safety and health of participants and organizers.
“We have had extensive discussions with everyone concerned or associated with the event, and then decided to postpone the event to June 25-27 in the hope that the situation would have improved by then.”

K-1000 gets a new slot in May; Hampi, Nagaland new venues for INRC
Bengaluru, 22 March 2021: The iconic Karnataka 1000, well known as K1000, which suffered a two-year break in its chequered history, will begin afresh as the second round of the National calendar with the traditional dates moved from August to May. The Champions Yacht Club, the promoters of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC), for four-wheelers announced the calendar for 2021 with six rounds and have added two more venues to the historic National championship by naming Nagaland, and Hampi, which successfully completed the Contender round this January. Delhi makes a comeback after last hosting a National round in 2005, the Rally of the North.
After a truncated season, the Champion Yacht Club FMSCI INRC 2021 will begin with the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) round in Chennai, run simultaneously with the Asian and National round, the popular South India Rally, from April 23 to 25. The round will also kick-start the Indian calendar in the hot summer of Chennai. Hosts Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), one of the best clubs in India, who are known for their meticulous administration and well-planned events, are making no stone unturned to make the return of `the’ international event a grand success. India did not host any international motorsports events for two years except the MRF challenge racing. The SIR, INRC’s first round will be held in and around Irungattukottai in Kanchipuram district around the MMRT and will have a Super Special Stage and Track stage and there will be two more physical stages named, Avisa and Alpha.
The Nationals will culminate in the picturesque North-Eastern state of Nagaland from November 12 to 14 to be organised by NAMSA, who produced a first-time National winner when Launusanen Pongenar dramatically turned tables and proved all experts wrong winning his class on a vehicle which was initially disqualified for being “old” and lacking `Fitness’. Namsa’s Nagaland venue will be the latest addition to join the map of Indian rallying, as a new INRC venue.
Hampi, which was denied a round by FMSCI in 2020, did a tremendous job of successfully organising a motorsport event, and taught a lesson or two to veteran motorsport organisers on how to rope in a sponsor, as they managed to get a strong backing by JSW. Hampi will be the other new venue for the INRC rounds with a proper round of INRC this year.
Though, Arunachal Pradesh hosted the National event for three years, if fell off the map and Nagaland will be hosting its first ever INRC round to host the grand finale of the country’s premier motorsport event.
After round 1, the bandwagon will move to Bengaluru for K-1000 on May 28 to 30, hosted by Karnataka Motor Sports Club. Then the third round will be hosted by CASC (Coimbatore Auto Sports Club) in Coimbatore from July 17 to 18. The Delhi-NCR round from August 27 to 28, is yet to be finalised as FMSCI is required to approve it.
Also this year’s championship will see the SUV class added into the mix to give a chance to other drivers in the country to display their skill on the national circuit, in view of the cancellation of Raid de Himalaya. SUVs have been part of INRC from 2014 with Mahindra’s fielding the top winning combination of Gaurav Gill and Musa Sherif. However, it will not be a separate National Championship class, and will run only as INRC class.
“We could not go all out last year due to reasons known to all. The pandemic had tied our hands and it was very difficult for us to organise a full season but still we did what we could do best and completed three rounds. But we are back on the track again and will have six rounds again this year,” Vamsi Merla, director of Champions Yacht Club and promoter of INRC said.
“When we came into motorsports, it was always our mission to take the sports to all the parts of the country and make it more inclusive and that is the reason we have given a chance to three new clubs. We are anticipating a great year ahead and hope that it exceeds all our expectations,” he further added.
Motor Sports Academy of Vijayanagar will carry out the operations in Hampi, meanwhile Nagaland Adventure and Motor Sports Association have been given the responsibility of the final round.
While Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Hampi have been ratified by the Rally Commission of the FMSCI, the Delhi-NCR and Nagaland round is subject to an FMSCI inspection and confirmation of the local organisers by the FMSCI.
INRC 2021 Calendar:
Round 1 – Chennai: Madras Motor Sports Club – April 23-25;
Round 2 – Bengaluru: Karnataka Motor Sports Club -May 28-30;
Round 3 – Coimbatore: Coimbatore Auto Sports Club – July 17-18;
Round 4 – *Delhi, BND Motor Sports , August 27-28;
Round 5 -Hampi: Motorsports Academy of Vijayanagar – October 1-3;
Round 6 – *Nagaland, NAMSA, – November 12-14;*Subject to FMSCI inspection and confirmation of organizer by the FMSCI

Team MRF takes P10; tests tyres and collects useful data
Tuscan (Italy), 14 March 2021: It was a successful outing for Team MRF Tyres in terms of testing tyres and collecting data at the Rally Il Ciocco e Valle del Serchio with new star recruits Paolo Andreucci and Francesco Pinelli finishing P10 here on Sunday.
Team MRF Tyres entered this rally in order to gain more valuable data for the development of the next generation of MRF Tyres. Andreucci/Pinelli piloted a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo this weekend and finished 10th after setting two top-6 stage times on Saturday. The field was very competitive, though, featuring an extensive list of Italian stars and WRC drivers and the gaps throughout the field would be very small.
The Ciocco Rally, as it is known, took place on Tuscan roads in Northern Italy, starting with Shakedown and a 1.98km Super Special Stage on Friday, before nine stages and 94km of competitive rallying on Saturday.
The rally was the first round of the Italian Rally Championship and took place entirely on tarmac.
Andreucci and Pinelli’s pace was evident on Friday with taking second place in both the Shakedown and Super Special Stage.
The attention turned to gaining data, and the wider development program for MRF Tyres. The times, however, would still be competitive through the Saturday running.
The Saturday action saw three stages that would be repeated three times. Each loop consisted of Massa-Sassorosso at 6.90 km, Careggine at 14.90 km and Molazzana 1 at 8.68km.
The weather would be affected by a windstorm currently going through Europe but that could not deter Team MRF Tyres.
However, the development exercise was the top priority and the team were able to run through a variety of scenarios throughout the day. As was the case in 2020, this rally was about tyre development.
The development program demonstrates Team MRF Tyres’ commitment to top-level European rallying.
This result comes after a strong run in the snow and ice rallies of Finland with Emil Lindholm/Mikael Korhonen and before the start of the European Rally Championship and Italian Rally Championship – Gravel (CIRT).
Paolo Andreucci, Driver, Team MRF Tyres, Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, said: “I am happy to start the rally with Team MRF Tyres. The team has an aggressive development strategy and we were working to obtain data for the tyre development. Our participation in the rally was aimed at collecting data for the subsequent development of the tyres.”
“It was a challenging rally with lots of wind and cool conditions and it was good to start the relationship before the gravel season started. It was my first rally with MRF Tires and I learned a lot about how it works.”
“During the rally, we made some choices aimed at analysing the behaviour of the tyres on slippery surfaces. The feedback was positive, especially in the wet. I can’t wait to work hard during the season.”

Team MRF Tyres in fourth place
Kouvola (Finland), 6 March 2021: Team MRF Tyres shone on the ice and snow in the Finnish Rally Championship and the SM OK Auto Ralli held near Kouvola today.
The crews were greeted with snow and icy conditions in the six-stage, 111km event but the weather conditions would play a major role in the outcome of the rally.
Team MRF Tyres drivers, Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen would be battling for a podium all rally, always within reach of the podium in their Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo.
The day got underway with the longest stage of the rally with the 29.8km Hermunen test, followed by the 11.7km Rämälä stage. The weather was perfect for ice rally, with ice and icy gravel, providing a good surface for the MRF studded tyre.
The first leg was 42km and Lindholm/Korhonen were in third at the end of the leg.
They would be involved in a great four-way fight for the lead with Juha Salo/Mikko Markkula, Mikko Heikkilä/Topi Luthinen and Teemu Asumaa/Marko Salminen.
It would continue through the 29km second loop of Teuroinen and Väärtti. Team MRF Tyres would lie in fourth at the end of the loop but just a handful of seconds off a podium.
However, the final two stages, repeat tests of Hermunen and Rämälä would prove decisive. The weather had turned, dumping up to 10cm of fresh snow on the stages.
The top runners would be disadvantaged by the road conditions and as Lindholm/Korhonen were running third on the road, the conditions poor.
The Team MRF Tyres duo, however, did well to keep their fourth place and were just 3.9 seconds off Riku Tahko/Markus Soininen.
It was a successful start to the season for Team MRF Tyres. Before 2021, the studded tyre had only competed once before. Now, it has three rallies, with another podium and a top-four finish.
The team were able to gain valuable data in one of the toughest national championships in the world and were able to show that MRF Tyres can run at the front in any competition.
Quotes
Emil Lindholm, Driver, Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo“This winter we have tripled the number of winter rallies driven by MRF Tyres. We can be proud of our results and the progress that the entire team have made at MRF Tyres. We have been able to move forward again on tyre development. I had a lot of confidence before the start of the season that MRF will be able to prepare a competitive tyre for winter conditions. That has been proven correct!”
“This was a tough rally with horrible conditions. I was happy with our pace and we were fighting for a podium position for the entire rally. The last two stages we had sensor issue that cost us time a lot of fresh snow and despite this, we were able to keep our fourth place.”
“The MRF Tyres worked very well and we can be proud of our winter season. I look forward to the rest of 2021.”
