The 2000 champions have now back-toback wins following their triumph in the season opener at home in March.

Organised by Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) under the aegis of National Federation, the Motorsports Association of India, the two-day rally favourites Naren and Ram clinch the issue once again to top the table in the National Championship.

After taking a narrow two seconds lead overnight, the duo were expecting a tough fightback kfrom talented team-mates Arjun Balu and co-driver BS Sujith Kumar and raised the tempo despite the rains that made the stages slippery. In the process, Naren, increased the lead to a comfortable level in the very first stage and then eased off.

“We decided to go flat out and opened a gap on Arjun with over 20 seconds lead. Then we eased off and nurtured the car to win the event”, said an elated Naren Kumar. However, he said any talk about the championship are `premature’ right now. “But two wins in the bag, is good to start,” the two-time National champion concluded.

The current Asian Zone champions, Naren and Ram took part in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship also and have driven two rallys at Canberra and New Zealand and are expected to run two more rallies in Asia.

Team MRF’s Karandip Singh with Bangalore navigator Jaidas Menon finished Overall third followed by National champion N Leelakrishnan and co-driver Farooq Ahmed in Overall fourth.

Soharab Zorabian and co-driver Rio Kapadia won the Rally Star Cup category while Parvinder Saundh and co-driver Paritosh Kohok came second with Tirtha Patil and co-driver Ashwin Naik taking the third spot.

Soharab who finished ahead of the more powerful 1400 cc cars, on Saturday, had a lead of 13 seconds over Parvinder Saundh (the only entrant from Nashik), and he managed a 31 seconds

lead in the first stage on Sunday and three seconds in the second stage. Parvinder managed to gain a second in the last stage, and finished second in this category with co-driver (ex two-wheeler navigator National champion) Paritosh Kohok. Tirhta Patil (co-driver Ashwin Naik) finished third in the class.

Jiby Maliakkal and co-driver Rohan Rego the reigning Rally Star Cup champions found the going very comfortable with Abhilash out of the reckoning and romped home with a huge lead, winning the 1400cc category. Jiby and Rohan finished a creditable Overall fifth also. Abhilash and co-driver Sangeeth Kumar came second with N Jayakumar and co-driver G Satish taking the third place in the 1400cc class.

  • Naren Kumar, Ramkumar begin season with a win; Reds sweep top-six spots

Coimbatore, 31 March 2002: Strong contenders and local stars VR Naren Kumar and navigator D Ramkumar of Team MRF led a sweep of all the top-six places by the `Reds’, topping the stage times on the outskirts of the city, in the Servo Mill & Monsoon Rally, 2002, the opening round of the Motorsports Association of India’s (MAI) Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) here on Sunday.

Naren and Ram, the defending Asian Zone Rally Champions, had an overnight lead of 12 seconds over teammates Sagar Muthappa and Sandeep S Rao from Bangalore. But the narrow lead proved to be too short as Sagar attacked the stages right from the word `go’ and in the very first stages not only made up the 12 seconds, but managed to take a lead of 40 seconds and to add to the complications for Naren, his Honda City suffered technical problems. But Naren carefully guarded his second place till then. And after the Service break after Stage 2, took care of the struts, Naren and Ram, had no other way but go all-out to bridge the gap, if had to eye a victory. “We were a bit worried but judging the pace of others, we decided to attack and go all-out. The struts were worrying us, but after the Service stop, we took off,” said Naren.

In the last three stages, Naren was fastest and garnered enough time on Muthappa and by the end of the five stages of the day, he not only bridged the gap but took a minute and four seconds lead.

“We had something loose at the rear and the car was not handling well. By the time we could set it, we lost time to Naren. But it is still a good beginning for the season and we hope for a good year,” said Muthappa.

Team MRF’s Karandip Singh and co-driver Jaidas Menon took the third place on the podium, a further 56 seconds behind Muthapopa. Former multiple-National champions N Leelakrishnan and co-driver Farooq Ahmed came fourth behind Karandip.

Talented Karnataka duo of Vikram Mathias and BS Sujith Kumar were Overall fifth clocking 2hours, 16min and 37seconds, but importantly they won their class, the 1400cc category. Vijyant Chaudhry and Moosa Sherif finished 6th overall.

“We were pushing hard to see whether we can match the 1600cc machines but gave up mid-way as we were keen not to win our class and avoid problems to the car,” said Mathias. They comfortably beat the Kerala duo of PG Abhilash and Sangeet Kumar, who were supported jontly by JK Tyres, Maruti Motorsport and Chettinad Sport.

But it was the day Team Chettinad, as their pair of Jiby Maliakkal and Rohan Rego, the Rally Star Cup champions last year, bounced back after an incident in Stage 3 where thier car turned turtle, and with a stunning effort they took the final place on the podium in the 1400cc class.

It was Q-Wait Oil’s Kerala duo of Dr Bikku Babu and Bonnie Thomas, who built on their Saturday’s lead and won the Rally Star Cup nurturing their car mixing caution with aggression. “We did have pressure yesterday, but today we went for a win making sure to bring the car home,” said Bikku Babu.

Shamsundar V and PV Srinivasa Murthy of Team Blue Lines, who were sixth overnight in their class took the third place despite two punctures and rued missed chances of taking the second. But others were not so lucky. The Rally Star Cup, overnight leaders Lohitt V Urs and Bopanna MK pulled out due to technical problems and others to follow suit were Phillipos Matthai and Bhopesh Gadotra, who had suspension issues, and Arjun Rao Aroor and Dunstan JM D’Silva who could not finish due to mechanical problems.

Of the 19 cars that started on Sunday, only 16 finished the rally. The second round will be at Nashik on June 15 & 16.

    Provisional results:

    Overall and Upto 1600cc: 1. VR Naren Kumar /D Ramkumar (Team MRF) (2hours, 13min, 13sec); 2. Sagar Muthappa /Sandeep S Rao (Team MRF) (2:14:17); 3. Karandip Singh /Jaidas Menon (Team MRF) (2:15:13); 4. N Leelakrishnan /Farooq Ahmed (Team MRF) (2:16:15).

  • Karandip-Jaidas win but Leela-Farooq clinch National Championship title

Mangalore, 28 Nov 2001: Karandip Singh and Jaidas Menon conquered the final rally of the 2001 season winning the Coffee Day Action Rally, the eighth and final round of the Motorsports Association of India’s (MAI) Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) which concluded at the Taj Manjuran Hotel, here, on Sunday.

The combination of Chandigarh-Bangalore pair of Singh and Menon, saw that former National champion Leelakrishnan and co-driver Farooq Ahmed, play second fiddle for the final rally in the south, winning the seventh round Overall honours. But the Coimbatore-Chikmagalur duo of Leela and Farooq clinched the National Championship for the year 2001, with Leelakrishnan taking the National title for the sixth time.

Karandip Singh displayed enough speed but was in full control as he ruled the stages in this sea-shore city and put Team MRF on the top pedestal as they won the Coffee Day Action Rally 2001, with ease.

However, the Coimbatore veteran representing MRF regained his National title after a gap of two years. While it is the sixth title for Leelakrishnan, it is the third championship for Farooq Ahmed, who won the National Championship with Leela in 1998 and 1999.

Last year’s Group N champion, Singh, struggled with his Maruti Baleno, whose wheels did not live up to the gruelling test of a rally. In 2000, Karandip, driving a Maruti Esteem, claimed the Group N title but missed the overall championship by a whisker. Both Leelakrishnan and Karandip won two rounds each but Leelakrishnan won on better points. In between, Sagar Muthappa and Sandeep S Rao, won two back-to-back rallies in Coorg and Cochin and threatened to steal the title from Leela and Farooq but had to be content with the runners-up spot in the National Championship with a DNF here following punctures, the same fate that met Leela

The stretch of Subramanya-Bisle ghat road, for about 20km, took a toll on the drivers and proved nemesis to many including the Zero car.

“For five of the eight rounds, I was leading the field, before having to pull out due to car problems. On the two occasions that I managed to finish, I emerged winner,” said Karandip after the Mangalore round, while savouring his victory along with co-driver Jaidas Menon.

Karandip’s first victory came at the K-1000 at Bangalore, where he ruled the dirt tracks and in Mangalore, too, driving a Maruti Esteem, he managed to nurture his car despite a broken drive shaft, and won the rally. “At that point, I did not expect to complete the first leg,” he admitted. However, he lead the rally after the first leg leading Vikram Mathais, who was placed second behind by 14 seconds on Day 1. Karandip did go all out on the second day but was second fastest in the 1400 category, and the Honda Citys were faster but were not in contention for the title as they failed to fiish the first leg.

    Provisional Results:

    Overall: 1. Karandip Singh/ Jaidas Menon (Team MRF) Esteem (1hour, 43min, 59sec); 2. Vikram Mathias/Sujith Kumar, Esteem (1:44:26); 3. Jagat Nanjappa/ Anita Nanjappa, Esteem (1:45:52); 4. Philipos Mathai/Sudarshan Gowda (1:46:10).

    Rally Star Cup:  1. Dr Bikku Babu/Bonnie Thomas, Esteem, (1:48:45); 2. Lohit V Urs/MK Bopanna, Esteem, (1:48:52); 3. Rahul Kantharaj/ Vivek Bhatt, Esteem (1:51:45).

    National Championship: Winners: Leelakrishnan/ Farooq Ahmed – 59 points;

    2. Sagar Muthappa/ Sandeep S Rao 51 points;

    3. Vikram Mathias/ BS Sujith Kumar – 43 points;

    4. Karandip Singh/ Jaidas Menon – 31 points;

    5. Jagat Nanjappa/ Anita – 29 points.

  • Sagar Muthappa, Sandeep Rao win Popular Rally, to open up the title race

Cochin, 28 October 2001: The 31-year Coorgi Sagar Muthappa and Sandeep Rao put their woes behind after three bad rallies and bounced with a win in Coorg last month, and added another back-to-back overall victory, comfortably clinching the 19th Chandrika Soap Popular Rally, the seventh round of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) here on Sunday.

With this victory, Sagar Muthappa and Sandeep Rao, kept themselves with a realistic chance of going for the title at the last round, the Coffee Day Rally, in Mangalore in December.

The rally consisted of 380km of total distance with nine Special Stages of two legs run on Saturday and Sunday. There were two physical stages, one of 15km at Boothathankettu and the other of 10km at Edamalayar, near Idukki district and these were run repeatedly as five stages on the first day and four stages on Sunday to make it a total of nine Special Stages making it about 115km of Stage-distance,

With a superb show on Saturday, the two Engineer friends based in Bangalore, Sagar and Sandeep, took a narrow lead of just 2 seconds but that was enough to keep reigning Asia Zone champion at bay and allowed them to fight on Sunday. But the champion in Naren, ably assisted by navigator Ramkumar, fought back taking the lead in the second stage on Sunday, but as fate would have it, he suffered clutch issues and lost a lot of time in the next stage. Sagar and Sandeep were steady and had an easy outing in the last stage to finish on top for their second successive victory. Last year’s winner hear, Arjun Balu and KR Kumar, fiished overall second and multiple former National champion, lost time in transport, and was content to be Overall third.

Biking legends Jagat Nanjappa and Anita, won the 1400cc Class with Vijayant Chowdhry and Musa Sherif taking the second place. With this win Jagat and Anita took the lead in the National Championship in this class replacing Vikram Mathias at the top.

Local star Dr Bikku Babu and co-driver Bonnie Thomas of Q-wait Oil clinched the Rally Star Cup for novices while Rahul Kantharaj and navigator Vivek Bhatt came second ahead of Manju K and co-driver K Prasad, who finished third.

    Final Provisional Results:

Overall: 1. Sagar Muthappa/ Sandeep S Rao (Team MRF) Honda City (1hour, 26min, 24sec); 2. Arjun Balu/ KR Kumar (Team MRF) Honda City (1:28:44); 3. • Maiden Overall title for Sagar Muthappa-Sandeep Rao

    By George Francis/ Scorp News

Madikeri, 30 Sept 2001: Team MRF’s Sagar Muthappa and co-driver Sandeep S Rao won their maiden Overall Title in the Coorg Xpresso Rally, the sixth round of the MAI Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) here on Sunday.

The Motorsports Association of India charted an eight round calendar and the last two rounds will be in Cochin on October and Mangalore in November. The sixth round here attracted a total number of 18 cars.

The Sagar-Sandeep duo was the National Rally Champion in 1998 in a lower class and it took nearly three years for the two to win a major title after they had shifted to a higher-class car. “We have done it,” said Sagar, leaning on his Team MRF red and white Honda City. “We were always finishing behind Naren and his partner and we needed that extra bit to prove our worth and we did that today.”

It was a similar case in the Rally Star Cup category too as JM Manju and co-driver Srinivas Murthy, in a blue-hued Esteem, won their maiden title. Both Manju and Murthy have been rallying on two wheelers from 1988 to 1996 and, in fact, Manju is also a motocross rider.

They shifted to cars this season with the advent of the RSC which offers a rally-prepared car with service back-up and a room for two for four days, at a low cost of Rs.45,000 per event.

“We feel great winning the rally here and we will try our best in the other two rallies of the season,” said Manju, and added “but anyday bikes are more fun than cars.”

The first leg of the Coorg rally was between Yemmagoondi and Polibetta estates, run twice each in the forward and reverse direction to make up eight Special Stages. The second leg is between Margolly and Cottabetta estates, run twice in the forward and once in the reverse direction to make up six Special Stages. So there were 14 Special Stages to test the skills of the National rallyists on the slippery dirt roads of the Coorg coffee estates.

National champion VR Naren Kumar and his co-driver D Ramkumar got off to a flying start and took the early lead on the opening day but luck eluded them as they crashed out during the second stage. Explaining the crash Naren Kumar said: “It was a fast left-hander. There was a bush extending a little onto the road and blinding the exit of the turn. I moved a little to the right to avoid it but hit the embankment that was on the road and the car went out of control and crashed. With the windshield smashed, we had no other option than to opt out of the rally.”

That gave Sagar and SAndeep, who were 15 seonds behind Naren and Ram in the initial stages of the rally, the upper hand. At the end of the day they had increased the lead considerably and enjoyed a two-minute advantage over their nearest rivals N Leelakrishnan and Farooq Ahmed.

Team MRF’s Vikram Mathias and co-driver Sujith Kumar took the day’s honours in the 1400cc class, while Lohith Urs and MK Bopanna were sitting pretty in the RSC event.

The second leg, flagged off the next day, had a lot in store in the six Special Stages that were planned out. There was a heavy downpour which made the dirt roads slushier. As a result the fifth Special Stage on the Cottabetta Estate was cancelled due to safety reasons. All the competitors played it safe and were content to finish the leg and pick up points for the Overall Championship. Arjun Balu and KR Kumar, who finished third overall, summed it up by saying, “In the given conditions our only aim was to gain as many points as possible.”

While the overnight leaders in two of the events continued their good run and went on to win the titles, Lohith and Bopanna were rather unfortunate in that they had gear ox problems andhad to pull out from the RSC Category. Manju and Murthy won the event comfortably in the end.

The Overall title has put Sagar and Sandeep in contention for the National Championship and they are now in the third position with 32 points. N Leelakrishnan and Farooq are still on the top with 51 points followed by Vikram Mathias and BS Sujith Kumar with 35 points.

AS Muthanna of TATA Coffee, who was the Chief Guest, gave away the prizes to the winners.

    Provisional Results:

    Overall: 1. Sagar Muthappa/ Sandeep S Rao (Team MRF) (1hour, 44minutes, 01second); 2. N Leelakrishnan/ Farooq Ahmed (Team MRF) (1:46:16); 3. Arjun Balu/ KR Kumar (Team MRF) (1:46:28).

    1401-1600cc Class: 1. Sagar Muthappa/ Sandeep S Rao (Team MRF) (1hour, 44minutes, 01second); 2. N Leelakrishnan/ Farooq Ahmed (Team MRF) (1:46:16); 3. Arjun Balu/ KR Kumar (Team MRF) (1:46:28).

    801 to 1400cc Class: 1. Vikram Mathias/ BS Sujith Kumar (Team MRF) (1:49:31); 2. Jagat Nanjappa/ Anita Nanjappa (Team MRF) (1:49:51); 3. R Gopinath/ C Rajaram (2:10:41).

    Rally Star Cup: 1. JM Manju/ U Srinivas Murthy (2:03:43); 2. Zubin P Nariman/ Mazdayar Vatcha (2:09:54); 3. Abdul Haq Saleem/ Sayed Mastaq (2:17:14).

Goa, 9 Sept 2001: Defending champions VR Naren Kumar and co-driver D Ramkumar kept their overnight lead in tact and continued their good run to take the Overall honours in the Old Anchor Rally de Goa, the fifth leg of the Motorsports Association of India (MAI)’s Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) here on Sunday.

Ace Coimbatore duo, who were leading by 13 seconds ahead of teammates Sagar Muthappa and Sandeep S Rao on Saturday while another MRF outfit Karandip Singh and co-driver Jaidas Menon, who won the K-1000 rally in the previous round in Bangalore were trailing in the third place. • Karandip Singh-Jaidas Menon win K-1000 Rally

Bangalore, 12 August 2001: Karandip Singh and co-driver Jaidas Menon clinched the 27th K-1000 Rally, the fourth round of the MAI Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) here on Sunday.

The Delhi-Bangalore duo may not be the fastest drivers on the track but their consistence performance saw them receive rich dividends as they clocked the best time recording 1hour, 49minutes and 5seconds to clear the eight Special Stages ahead of others. Though the pair did not record any fastest stage time in any of the Special Stages, they emerged faster than the next best pair, the multiple former National champions Leelakrishnan and Farooq Ahmed by 24 seconds and are more than a minute ahead of the third-placed husband and wife biking legends Jagat Nanjappa and Anita Nanjappa, who clocked 1:50:16 to take the third place in the Overall honours.

Youngsters Vikram Mathias and BS Sujith Kumar began on a blistering pace setting the fastest time in the first stage clocking 10min 33 seconds but the duo with great potential slowed down in the next two stages finishing third and fourth and had to pull out in SS 4. That ended their campaign.

Then another formidable pair Sagar Muthappa and co-driver Sandeep S Rao, who overcame initial hiccups and appeared to be going on top of everyone clocking the fastest stage times in three stages, topping SS2, SS3 and SS4 but thereafte could not sustain the tempo finishing fifth, fourth, fourth an fifth respectively in the last four Special Stages. However, they finished Overall runners-up to Singh and Menon.

Former Multiple National Champion Leelakrishnan and co-driver Farooq Ahmed, who set the fastest timing in Special Stage 7 came third in the Overall placings followed by biking legends, the husband-and-wife pair of  Jagat Nanjappa and Anita Nanjappa, who topped Special Stage 5. Talented Arjun Balu and co-driver KR Kumar, who managed to clocke fastest times SS6 and SS8, were in the reckoning for top spots but lost too much time in SS4 that put paid to their hopes and they ended in Overall fifth place.

  • Vikram Mathias-Sujith Kumar take Overall win, save face for MRF

    By George Francis/Scorp News

Nashik, 10 June 2001: The second round of the Motorsports Association of India’s (MAI) Indian National Rally Championship (INRC), the WISA’s Taj India Rally was held here on June 9 and 10. At the conclusion of the first leg, Team MRF was sitting pretty, with the top six places safely tucked away. But there was an amazing revelation on Day 2. Six of the seven `Red-and-white’ cars left in the fray were disqualified after a late evening scrutiny session at the completion of the first leg. That left only the No.8 Esteem of Vikram Mathias and co-driver BS Sujith Kumar, flying the Red-and-White Flag.

Organised by the Western India Sports Association (WISA), the rally was held over 424km of broken, rough tarmac, through the plains, several small hamlets and over the dry brown hills that surround the city of Nashik. The first leg comprised 210km with three challenging Special Stages. The second leg, the next day, was a repeat of the previous day’s route and Special Stages.

The event attracted 20 entries from all over the country. Eight of these were from Team MRF and 10 are part of the Rally Star Cup. All the top Indian riders were present, vying for valuable championship points. A couple of new faces, the 18-year-old Philippos Mathai from Delhi and co-driver SN Shanmuga from Bangalore, also took part. Another pair making its INRC debut was Along Aier and Thongde Imlong, who had come all the way from Nagaland to get a feel of the National-level rallying.

The first stage, which ran over 24.12km, passed through a couple of small ghat sections, which threw up some sharp `U’ turns that the drivers had to negotiate. Running over 22.19km, the second Special Stage had a particularly tough section of about 2km which was more rough dirt than tarmac. As for the third Special Stage, which ran over a distance of 16.17km, the first 2km was very rough and prompted the organisers to cancel that particular section.

For the new entrants, the Honda City and Suzuki Balenos, though packed with extra power, things were not very bright. “This route is really bad for the Baleno which is even lower than the Hondas, especially with out new suspension set-up,” said MRF’s Vijayanth Chaudhry.

One the competitors know what they had in store, they were anxious to get on with it. “We fancied our chances in the first and the second stages but were not very hopeful about the third. We wanted to finish, but at the same time, we did not want to leave without a placing,” said PG Abhilash, who along with co-driver, Sangeeth Kumar, competed in an Esteem. The reigning champions, Naren Kumar and co-driver D Ramkumar admitted that they had to make up on their championship points as they missed the first round of the INRC at Coimbatore. The duo was also battling for the Asia Zone Rally Championship points at the same event.

The opening day turned out to be a pleasant one, perfect for the start of the first leg. Naren and Ramkumar were the first to be flagged off at the Taj Residency Nashik. But it was Leelakrishnan and Farooq Ahmed who clocked the fastest time in the first Special Stage. Everyone expected the powerful Honda City or Suzuki Baleno to blitz the outdated Esteems, but last year’s sensational find, Vikram Mathias and co-driver Sujith Kumar, had an amazing run.

Naren Kumar and Ramkumar who many expected to be among the forerunners, made some uncharacteristic mistakes and ended the day in the fourth position. For Arjun Balu and co-driver R Kumar, their dismal show of the season continued when they crashed out. PG Abhilash and Sangeeth Kumar had a major crash in the third Special Stage. Fortunately the pair escaped with minor injuries but the car was severely damaged and they had to discontinue.

At the completion of the first leg, the cars returned to the Taj and then the drama unfolded. Technical delegates Asif Haidery had noticed that the MRF cars looked a little low. The cars were summoned for scrutiny. Six of the seven cars were found to be running about 20-25mm lower than the prescribed regulations and were disqualified.

There were only 12 cars left for the second leg. Surprisingly, the fastest time in the first Special Stage was clocked by Sohrab Zorabian and co-driver Raymond Kapadia, competing in the RSC category. The pair drove daringly to accomplish this feat, considereing the fact that they did this without brakes. This took them from the eighth place, at the end of the first leg, to the third spot in the RSC category. But the second leg belonged to Vikram and Sujith all the way. Starting the leg in the lead, the pair lost some time, owing to an electrical problem in the first stage, but they kept their cool and proceeded at a conservative pace in the final two stages, well aware that they could hand on to the lead. “I hardly slept last night. This was the first time we were leading in a rally. Besides there was a lot of pressure on us, being the only MRF car left in the fray,” said an overjoyed Vikram at the finish. Debutants Phillippos Mathai and SN Shanmuga finished in second place. “I came here hoping to at least finish the rally. I never dreamt that I would finish second,” said Mathai, a Class XII student. Pervinder Saundh and former group D motorcycles National champion Paritosh Kohok did extremely well to take the third spot.

In the RSC category, Jiby Maliakkal and his co-driver Rohan Rego drove consistently to finish first. Anil Kumar and Amit Kumar followed in second while Sohrab and Raymond finished third. Vikram and Sujith led the table with 22 points followed by Leelakrishnan and Farooq with 16 points.

  • Naren-Ram win Asia Zone; Leela-Farooq clinch INRC Overall win

Coimbatore, 1 April 2001: Double National champion Naren Kumar and co-driver D Ramkumar of Team MRF won the Asia Zone round this time around while multiple former champion and N Leelakrishnan and co-driver Farooq Ahmed, also of Team MRF, won the Overall honours in the opening round of Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) in the Servo Mill and Monsoon rally, which ran simultaneously with the Asia Zone round, here on Sunday.

Once again the rally saw stiff rivalry between Karamjit Singh of Malaysia and Naren Kumar, but it was the Indian who came out trumps this time driving his Honda Civic to victory displaying his skills while Karamjit in his Proton Satria with Jagdev Singh as co-driver, had to settle for a second for JK Tyre, after running 432 km of rally distance where the special stages consisted of 146.2km. There were 10 gravel Special Stages run in the Servo Mill and Monsoon Rally under the aegis of Motorsports Association of India (MAI).

Naren, had a comfortable lead of over 80 seconds and another Indian pair of Hari Singh and GS Mann, came third after their problems in the second leg ruined chances of any better performance.

MRF’s Naren and co-driver Ram Kumar, had a 16-second lead overnight, Naren gained another 15 seconds on the very first stage on Sunday to take the sting out of the competition and thereafter, managed a steady pace. He did ease off in the rough second stage to preserve the car and despite losing the lead he made in the first stage he managed to keep the lead with an aggressive drive in the third stage, to win the rally.

Hari Singh and GS Mann, the reigning champions from Chandigarh, suffered flat tyres twice in two different stages and lost time. They had to be content with a third place as changing tyres put them completely out of a rally win.

In the National Championship class of 1600cc, it was N Leelakrishnan, five-time former national champion, who stole the limelight. While Team MRF’s, husband and wife pair of Jagat and Anita Nanjappa won the 1400cc title, Lohitt V Urs and co-driver MK Bopanna lifted the Rally Star Cup. Jagat Nanjappa, a legend in two-wheeler racing with 9 National riders’ titles, overcame a young field of drivers to win his maiden title in a four-wheeler class.

    Provisional Final placings:

Asia Zone: 1. Naren Kumar /Ram Kumar (India, MRF); 2. Karamjit Singh /Jagdev Singh (Malaysia, J K Tyre); 3. Hari Singh / Gurinder Singh (India).
