  • Kush Maini takes 2nd position in Senior debut at the Kerpen Circuit

Kush Maini (14) stole the show at the final round of the German Karting Championship (DKM), which was conducted this past weekend at the Kerpen circuit in Germany.

The event was the first time Kush competed in Germany and also marked the youngster’s foray into the senior class of karting. The KF class is open to anyone above the age of 15 and is often contested by veterans with more than 10 years of karting experience.

Coming to the race at hand, the youngster’s weekend began with a bang when he qualified 5th overall with a time of 43.375 seconds which was a mere .133 seconds off the leader. He followed this up with so

me great racing in the heats to eventually manage a 6th place starting position in the finals.

The finals however did not start well at all, with Kush losing two positions at the start that saw him drop down to 8th, undeterred by this, the youngster displayed a maturity beyond his years and patiently worked his way up the order. One of the more memorable instances was when he managed to overtake 3 karts in one lap going from 5th to 2nd in the space of a few corners. However disaster struck, when on the same lap one of his competitors flipped his kart while fighting for position and the ensuing melee was severe enough to warrant a red flag. This meant all of Kush’s work was undone as the rules state that in an instance where the red flag comes out, the order of the race for the restart is counted as per the previous lap. By implementing this rule, Kush had to restart the race in 5th and had only a handful of laps to try and make it back up the order. With that in mind the talented teenager who very recently celebrated his 15th birthday blitzed his way through the field and was quickly back in second place. He began chasing down the leader who had by this time pulled out a small but significant lead and was on his bumper by the last lap of the race. Kush tried making a move on the leader, but the man in first used his experience to the fullest and managed to hold off Kush and win by the smallest of margins.

Kush also managed to set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 43.395 seconds that was almost a full two tenths quicker than anyone else on the grid.

When asked about his race, a delighted Kush said, “First of all I’d like to thank my team, Forza Racing who gave me a near perfect kart to work with. I tried my best to make a move on the last lap but I couldn’t make it stick and had to settle for second, that being said I’m quite happy with KF (senior class) debut, I’ve never raced in Germany before so to come here and get a podium straight away is quite a good result.”

Kush will now focus his attention on the J.K.Tyre Formula BMW championship before switching his attention to the WSK Final Cup in Adria, Italy, which is scheduled in November.

  • Superb Shahan takes maiden win in Rotax Max Asia Challenge

Shah Alam, 20 Sept. 2015: Eleven-year old Indian karting talent, Shahan Ali Mohsin clinched a dominating win at Round 6 of the 2015 Rotax Max Asia Challenge at the Shah Alam International Kart Circuit here in Malaysia. The wonder kid from Agra came out in flying colours in the Micro Max class.

Competing in the Micro Max, a category for karters between 8 and 12 years, which saw Asia’s top karting racers in action, Shahan braved several issues early-on in the weekend to reign supreme on Sunday. He finished the pre-finals in second place having started P13, and went one better in the finals to stand on the top step of the podium, winning by a margin of 0.648 seconds.

“It is a really special day, a memorable one for me with my first win in Asia. The best part was that it was fair and square, there was no luck or freak incidents, just a clean run from the back of the grid to the top of the podium”, remarked an elated, emotional Shahan.

“There were lots of ups and downs through the season and then we missed the previous round so this win makes up for it somewhat. We all wished it would have come a bit sooner, but nevertheless I am really happy to sign off the Asian season on a winning note”, he added.

Shahan’s weekend didn’t start off too well, and come qualifying he was only 14th out of 19 karters. There wasn’t much progress in the incident-filled Heats either, he finished 10th and 14th in the two heats respectively.

Shahan’s iS Racing team worked hard overnight to sort out the setup, and during the Sunday morning warm-up, things looked better as he was third and Shahan felt more comfortable.

Nevertheless, he still had an uphill task ahead, coming from the back is never easy in karting grids as there are high chances of incidents in the mid-pack, often featuring innocent victims who get collected in the melee.

Starting 13th for the prefinal, Shahan remained cautious on the opening lap, keeping his nose out of trouble. The next 15 laps were a master class in precise yet aggressive race-craft as the 11-year old made his way up the grid. Clean, confident and ensuring that every move he made stuck, Shahan was in top five by the end of lap 9. The podium was clearly in reach but the progress was now slower, and it took Shahan the remaining five laps to clinch the second spot. It was impressive feat nevertheless, with Shahan unsurprisingly posting the fastest lap of the race.

Starting on the front-row for the finals, victory was clearly in reach but it was definitely not going to be easy to overhaul his iS Racing teammate Putera Adam – the defending Micro Max Champion. As the green flag was waved, a close battle ensued and only after four laps did Shahan managed to break away from Putera and establish a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish to the chequered flag.

“I think it is the best day of my racing career so far, given the odds we had this morning and how everything turned around in a span of a few hours. I am really thankful for iS Racing throughout and of course to my parents for having supported me through a gruelling season”, said Shahan.

“We are still working on our plans for next year but whatever happens, I will take a lot of learning from this year into the future as well as into our campaign back at home in the JK Tyre Rotax National Championship”, he added.

Shahan is currently leading the Micro Max standings in the 2015 JK Tyre National Championship as well, with Round 4 scheduled on 26-27 September at Meco Kartopia, Bangalore.

  • Jehan walks away from a triple roll accident at Silverstone

Silverstone (UK), 11 Sept 2015: Sahara Force India Academy racer, Jehan Daruvala, escaped unhurt as he walked away after a triple roll accident following a contact with teammate at Silverstone

    on Friday.

The Indian racer is taking part in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series for the first time. Daruvala was quick in practice but had a terrible crash in Race 1 to effectively bring an end to his event.

The 16-year-old Indian topped the time sheets of the first practice session with a laptime of 1:58.831 with 28 cars on the grid. In session 2 he slipped down to 7th in the order, 0.4 seconds off. In qualifying for race 1 and 2, Jehan at one stage had the quickest sector times, when a small but crucial mistake put him out of contention for pole in both races. The huge number of cars on the grid means that starting orders were not based on pure quickest lap and Jehan would start 6th for race 1 and 14th for race 2.

Race 1 started with Jehan 6th on the grid. Unfortunately the race took a nasty turn for Jehan, as going into the Becketts curve, he was squeezed by team-mate Ben Barnicoat. The 2 cars made contact and Jehan left the track at high speed. He hit the gravel trap sideways and the car dug in, causing Jehan to roll over twice and then flip end-over-end with his car coming to rest on top of the barriers in dramatic fashion.

Luckily Jehan was completely safe, and the marshals were by his side in seconds. As Jehan got out of the car, the race was red flagged due to another horrific looking crash a few corners later.

“We both entered the complex side by side and there was contact. I was a mere passenger after that. It is the first time I have had to get out of a car upside down” said a disappointed Jehan adding a touch of humor to the incident. His car was completely wrecked and the situation meant that Jehan would not be able to participate in race 2.

The team worked hard and somehow managed to put the car back together for Race 3 the next day. Jehan was optimistic about the race, but unfortunately the car had suffered too much damage in the triple roll the previous day. Jehan suffered from suspension issues, with his laptimes around 0.9 seconds slower than the quickest, he crossed the line in 16th position.

“I have to really thank the team for the excellent job they did to prepare the car for Race 3. Sadly, there were some issues which couldn’t be solved at the track and I was off the pace. That’s the way racing is. I am happy with the pace I had in practice and qualifying. I am just going to now focus and look forward to my next race this weekend in Nurburgring”  said Jehan

  • Podium for Armaan Ebrahim at Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series

SENTUL (INDONESIA): India’s Armaan Ebrahim and his Sri Lankan partner Dilantha Malagamuwa notched their second consecutive podium finish as the pair were placed third in the first of the two races of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series at the Sentul International Circuit, here on Sunday.

JK Tyre Brand Ambassador Armaan and Dilantha, who had finished third in the previous round at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, put in a fine performance in the first race of the weekend for a podium spot after starting 10th on the grid.

Going into the fourth round, Armaan and Dilantha were placed second on the championship leaderboard and had hoped for a strong showing to take back the lead.

However, their weekend was off to a disastrous start as Dilantha had a bad crash in the opening laps in the first practice session. Consequently, Armaan missed both the practice sessions and most of the Qualifying se

ssion as the car had suffered extensive damage.

Starting 10th in Race 1, Armaan took the start and drove at a frenetic pace, making eight places and moved up to second before handing over the car to Dilantha.

Dilantha dropped one position towards the end of the race due to a problematic gearbox and the team took the chequered flag in third position which earned valuable points as well.

Armaan took the start again for Race 2 from fifth on the grid. He got off to a storming start and half way through the race, had moved up to second place overall before Dilantha took over.

With just two laps to go for a strong second place finish, disaster struck when the rear right tyre blew, forcing Dilantha to drop down the order.

Reflecting on the weekend, Armaan said: “Coming away with a third placed Podium was definitely a consolation after a disastrous start to the race weekend.

“It was unfortunate that Dilantha lost traction in the first practice session and suffered a big crash which damaged the car badly. Missing out on both the practice sessions and most of Qualifying meant that I had to go into the race blind.

“Nevertheless, it was a good race as I had a very good race pace and we were able to come away with a podium position.

“Race 2 was extremely disappointing as we had done all the hard work and were comfortably placed in second position before Dilantha took over. With just two laps to go for the chequered flag, the rear tyre deflated and Dilantha lost track position to finish 11th.”

“We now look forward to the next race in Shanghai in October and hopefully Lady Luck will smile on us and we can take back the Championship lead.”

  • After maiden pole, Jehan claims podium in Race 1, slips to fourth in second: Formula Renault 2.0 Alps

Sahara Force India Academy’s Jehan Daruvala once again proved his credentials as he continues a fantastic run in his debut season of Formula Car Racing. Racing in only his second event as a guest driver, at the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS series, the 16 year old Indian ensured the fraternity took notice of his talent. Jehan quickest in practice, went on to earn his first pole position of his formula car career at the Misano Adriatico circuit, named after Marco Simoncelli. He also went on to earn his 2nd podium, followed by another pole.

In Free Practice 1 Jehan was 4th, but went better in Free Practice 2 to emerge as the quickest. The qualifying session for race 1 started & Jehan waited in the pits initially. He got onto track with just 9 minutes left on the clock, setting a laptime good enough for 3rd on the list. Jehan then put in a scorcher of a lap to bag pole with a time of 1:33.045. He was just 3 thousandths of a second ahead of former championship leader – Jack Aitken. Current championship leader Jake Hughes was 3rd on the list.

“I have tested only once at this circuit, but I really like this track. It feels fantastic to take pole position here. I hope I can convert this into a good result for the race” said Sahara Force India Academy racer, after earning his first ever pole in Formula Cars.

The races were a different story altogether. Jehan’s inexperience amongst the seasoned & highly competitive grid showed up as he made a cautious start to fall down to third. By the end of lap 1, Jehan had further fallen to fourth. After settling into a good rhythm, Jehan mounted an attack on the 3rd placed Romanov, of Russia. He soon passed him & sealed the final podium position behind British race winner Jack Aitken & Russian Matevos Isaakyan.

Qualifying for race 2 once again saw Jehan extracting the best out of his car. The Sahara Force India Academy racer took his 2nd pole position with a laptime of 1:32.375. His margin much bigger this time as Hughes in 2nd was 0.178 seconds behind while Isaakyan was in the 3rd.

Unfortunately once again, Jehan was not able to capitalize on his pole once again. After the lights went out, the teenager from Mumbai fell to third. A brief safety car period followed & Jehan remained in 3rd. On lap 7 a small mistake by Jehan saw him fall to 4th. He was not able to gain positions this time & the race was eventually won by Jake Hughes.

Jehan later reflected on his weekend saying, “I am really happy with my pace this weekend & a big thank you to the team for a fantastic car. It has been tough racing against the very best racers at the top. I still have a lot to learn & also need to improve my race starts. I am positive about how things are working out & would like to thank Sahara Force India Academy & my family as well”

Jehan’s next event will be at the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit, in Belgium as part of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC series.

  • Team MRF the team to beat in APRC as it looks to 4th straight win

Whangarei, 15 April 2015: Team MRF head into this weekend’s first round of the 2015 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship targeting their fourth successive win in the prestigious series.

The 2013 champion, India’s Gaurav Gill, will head Team MRF’s attack, ably supported by his Skoda Fabia Super 2000 team-mat

e, Pontus Tidemand, from Sweden. Frenchman, Jean-Louis Leyraud, will drive a third Race Torque-prepared Skoda in New Zealand’s Rally of Whangarei, from April 17 to 19.

Gill will fancy his chances of a second title this year, having won in 2013 and finishing runner-up last year. With experience of the Skoda Fabia S2000 and the events that make up the APRC, he’ll be hard to beat.

But the early season hype has been around his young team-mate, who led the World Rally Championship qualifying Swedish Rally earlier this year. “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge. It makes me incredibly proud to see my name on the list of ŠKODA’s drivers,” Tidemad said. “I have been waiting for a chance like this for years and I will take care of it in the best way I can, both in terms of performance and development, to get a good result for ŠKODA Motorsport.”

Despite not having had any experience with the seven events that make up the APRC, Tidemand will be hoping that he can repeat the performance of last year’s champion, and Team MRF driver, Jan Kopecky, who won on his first attempt. “We will do everything we can to take podiums and victories as soon as possible,” Tidemand’s co-driver, Emil Axelsson, added.

While both Tidemand and Gill will contest all events in the APRC, Leyraud, who is based in New Caledonia, will tackle only those events making up the Pacific Cup component.

In past seasons the Race Torque-prepared Team MRF Skodas have been the cars to beat, and with a proven package, team manager Lane Heenan is hoping for similar success in 2015. “The Skoda Fabia is one of the most successful rally cars in the world at present, with many international victories around the world, and we’re hoping that continues this year.

“We’ll be using the same cars that finished last season so successfully, and with further development we expect to our drivers to be right on the pace again.”

However, the new Fabia R5 is likely to replace the current Super 2000 model before the end of this year’s championship. “We plan to have our team running the new ŠKODA Fabia R 5 in the APRC by the end of the year – after all, the season finale takes place in our most important market, China,” ŠKODA Motorsport Director Michal Hrabánek said.

The Rally of Whangarei commences on the evening of Friday, April 17, with a rally show in central Whangarei, before they attack two passes of the night time Super Special Stage at Pohe Island. Leg one continues on Saturday, heading as far north as Kawakawa for eight special stages on the fast, flowing cambered roads the rally is famous for, while Sunday’s final leg heads south of Whangarei for a further six stages. A total of 282 kilometres of competitive stages make-up the event.

Team MRF’s strongest opposition is expected to come from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X of Indonesia’s Subhan Aksa, and New Zealander youngster Mike Young in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
