Roller-coaster drive for Advait Deodhar in penultimate round

Zolder, 10 October 2021: The only Indian in NASCAR races, Advait Deodhar had a roller-coaster of a weekend at the penultimate round of the Euro Nascar2 Championship at Circuit Zolder in Belgium on Saturday and Sunday.

Official Practice 1 : The Indian could not take part in the official practice due to a clutch problem.

Official Practice 2 : The Indian was running in P2 overall, but the session ended with a blown engine on his #56 Ford Mustang in the final minutes. “We are still not sure what caused it, but a piston rod punched a hole in the engine. The mechanics did a remarkable job at installing a new engine over night,” Deodhar said.

QUALIFYING – The Mumbai Yachtsman came 4th in the qualifying session. “It was a close qualifying and I managed to qualify on the second row of the grid for the first race of the weekend,” he added.

Race 1 : In Race 1 he came 4th. “I managed to have a few on-track battles and ended up bringing the car home in 4th, gaining valuable Championship points.”

Race 2 : However, in Race 2, he had to limp home in a heavily damaged car in P16. It was due to three dramatic on-track incidents. “I ended up with severe damage on the car and had to limp home in P16 in order to get points, rather than retiring the car,” he explained.

“I moved up to 4th in the Championship on Saturday and am now back down in 5th after Sunday’s result,” with double points for the last round, the championship is still open.

The final round takes place on the October 30 & 31at Circuit Vallelunga in Italy. “Still there is a lot left to be gained,” he grinned.

  • Historic DTM silver for Arjun Maini

Historic DTM silver for Arjun Maini

Nuremberg, 9 October 2021: Ace Indian racing star Arjun Maini of Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed won his maiden DTM podium with silver in the Saturday’s race. Thus, he became the first Indian on a DTM podium and accolades poured in for the Indian star, who embraced this form of motorsports at the beginning of the season by becoming the first Indian to take part in DTM series.

The Omega Seiki and J.K.Tyre backed driver was justly rewarded for the pace he has shown throughout the season with the Indian managing to hold off a strong challenge from championship leader Liam Lawson towards the end of the race.

As expected going into the weekend, Maini was able to make full use of his prior knowledge of the Norisring race circuit from his Formula 3 days. The Indian finished second in Free Practice 2 before qualifying fourth for the weekend’s first race. While the Indian was overtaken by Mercedes stablemate Maximillian Gotz at the start, he managed to keep out of major trouble, despite banging wheels with Lawson and mildly damaging his front right suspension.

It took Arjun many laps to get used to the damage and yet retain a reasonable pace.

A cleanly executed pitstop from the GetSpeed racing team further aided the Indian’s effort, with Maini leapfrogging Lawson and settling in behind Gotz, a position he would go on to maintain for the remainder of the race.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the result,” a clearly jubilant Maini stated.

“We’ve worked so hard throughout the year and while our qualifying pace has been good, we’ve never been able to stitch together a clean race. Today was just one of those days where everything came together, our pace was good and GetSpeed executed a well-judged pitstop.

“We have one more race to go tomorrow so I won’t be celebrating too much, but I have to say it feels good to finally achieve my aim for the season.”

The result also marked GetSpeed’s first podium in the championship, the team made their DTM debut this season with Maini and the pair have performed admirably over the course of the season given their relative lack of experience.

Earlier, in DTM Norisring powered by BWT, the ultimate showdown is imminent on Sunday. With his victory on Saturday, Maximilian Götz has made the three-way battle for the coveted DTM title even more thrilling. With the Mercedes-AMG run by the HRT team, the driver from Uffenheim scored his second win of the season. Points’ leader Liam Lawson secured third place with the Red Bull Ferrari behind Indian Arjun Maini with the GetSpeed Mercedes while Kelvin van der Linde finished fourth with the ABT Audi at the 2.3 kilometres long Norisring.

With this thrilling outcome of the race, Lawson, now leading with a total of 224 points, extended his margin to 18 points over Kelvin van der Linde (206), but Götz (205) reduced his gap to only one point to van der Linde and 19 to Lawson. In total, there are still 28 points up for grabs, three in qualifying and 25 in the deciding race on Sunday. Arjun Maini, who was plagued by mechanical failures and engine issues earlier, is 13th in the standings with 40 points.

The Bengaluru-born Maini, began the week-end on a confident note posting a 49.842 sec in Free Practice on to finish 7th , just 0.256 second off the pace of P1,  and put on a good 42 laps with only Esteban Muth putting more laps, and derived good data to set up the car. He did another 43 laps in Free Practice 2 and was the second quickest posting a time of 49.405, missing the top entry on the timesheets by just 0.030sec. He continued the good run improving the time below 49s but could only get a P4 on the start grid for the Saturday race as the top-8  were all in 1/100th of a second. Maini P4 is just 0.007off the pole man as he clocked 48.938. The Indian bagged 18 points to take his tally to a decent 40 points despite all the hiccups with the mechanical issues.

“What an incredible race! It’s a big day for @ArjunMaini, the first Indian on a DTM podium,” tweeted Mercedes AMG official handle with a hashtag #DTM2021″ and tagged Maini. “Thank you guys! The care was mega,” was the Indian star’s reply.

“Yes, we did it. P2. I am so happy to get my first podium in DTM (series) here in Norisring and also the first podium for India,” Maini said after the race and thanked all his supporters, his team Mercedes AMG and GetSpeed, for the car, on the Social Media. `”Raring to go for tomorrow’s race,” he quipped.

THE LONG WAIT IS OVER: Arjun Maini gets his first chance to spray champagne and celebrate at DTM Series on Saturday after winning a Silver.

The season’s final qualifying session and race can be streamed on AutoCar India’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/autocarindia1) with Qualifying flagging off at 1 pm IST with the race starting at 5 pm IST.
  • Harith Noah begins Dakar prep with Rallye du Maroc

Harith Noah begins Dakar prep with Rallye du Maroc

Zagora, 7 October 2021: Five-time Indian National Champion, Harith Noah, who completed a tremendously successful Dakar 2021, will begin his preparations with the Rallye du Maroc for the next six days. The ace Indian champion, backed by TVS, has left India a fortnight ago to acclimatise and is raring to go. Last Dakar, his brilliant riding and navigation saw him become the first Indian to finish in the top-20 of the toughest cross-country rally in the world.

“I am back on the rally bike after a long and time and all-set in competition mode. Looking forward for a week of racing in Morocco. It has not been the best of places for me. Let us see how it goes this time around. It is basically to shrug off the lethargy and switch gears in preparation for the Dakar,” said India’s youngest and best finisher at Dakar, Harith Noah, talking to this website.

Action in the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies resumes this week with the fourth event in this year’s series, Rallye du Maroc scheduled to run from October 7 to 13. Based around a central bivouac in Zagora, south of Ouarzazate, the five legs take in a wide range of technical, fast and sandy tracks, as well as dunes, and will be the setting for world-class action on the 21st anniversary event running in the Draa River valley in the southeast of Morocco.

Denis Krotov and Konstantin Zhiltsov head an impressive entry list in their MINI John Cooper Works Rally. The Russians, leading the series with two second positions overall this season, are however in the thick of a battle with Nasser Al Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel who are just half a point adrift in the FIA World Cup standings. The Qatari/French Toyota pairing, returning to action in the series for the first since the opening round in Spain, are not only multiple champions in the discipline, but have an imposing history of five victories on Rallye du Maroc (2014-2018).

Lucio Alvarez and Armand Monleon hold joint third in the series alongside Mattias Ekström, the Argentine/Spanish pairing having claimed the win in Kazakhstan. Ekström and Emil Bergkvist will also be fighting hard for top honours and, on equal points and with just two separating them and Al Attiyah/Baumel, the Swedes will be looking to close the gap and better their third-place finish on Rally Kazakhstan in June. Yazeed Al-Rajhi and Michael Orr also return to action in their Toyota Hilux Overdrive. The Saudi Arabian/British duo have had a fine run on recent events in the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas, with Al-Rajhi leading the series with one round remaining. With a fifth place finish in Morocco in 2019, when the event last ran due to the pandemic, they need to capitalise on the momentum to reduce the eight point deficit to the lead in the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies.

The French crew of Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot have one fourth place finish to their names this season, and the Polish/German pairing of Jakub Przygonski and Timo Gottschalk join the contenders for the first time this year. They finished third on the event in 2019. A host of other top cross-country drivers also join the action in Morocco, including Paulo Ferreira, Sebastian Halpern and Mathieu Serradori, who so nearly claimed a maiden victory with the Century CR6 in Kazakhstan.

The 13-strong field of T3 contenders is headed by Cristina Gutierrez, who is co-driven by Frenchman François Cazalet. The Spanish OT3 driver is leading the category by 20.5 points after winning in Spain and Kazakhstan and her nearest rival, Fernando Alvarez, will again be pushing hard after claiming two second positions in T3 this season.

No fewer than 25 crews have entered in T4 with the top three series rivals going head to head. American, Austin Jones, leads the category with a 27.5 point advantage over Dutchman Kees Koolen, while Eugenio Amos trails by a further seven points. All three will be fielding Can-Am Mavericks with the chasing pack looking to topple their top results.

Team MRF Tyres on the pace but focussing on data as FIA ERC returns to Portugal

Two cars for Team MRF Tyres with Dani Sordo/Cándido Carerra and Simone Campedelli/Tania Canton in Fafe

Fafe (Portugal), 30 Sept. 2021: Team MRF Tyres is ready to take on the final gravel round of the FIA European Rally Championship season with the Rally Serras de Fafe e Felgueiras taking place on the legendary roads of northern Portugal.

The rally, which features the famous and spectacular Fafe jump, is the sixth of eight rounds for the 2021 FIA ERC season and Team MRF Tyres will compete at the front with two cars.

Coming to Fafe on the back of a second place finish at the Azores Rallye is Dani Sordo with Cándido Carrera in the Hyundai i20 R5.

The Spanish pairing completed an intense day of testing in preparation for the event with data and development remaining as the key objective in Portugal.

However, with one rally under their belts, the team expects to be able to maximise the data opportunities and to challenge for top stage times.

Alongside Sordo/Carrera in Team MRF Tyres colours are Simone Campedelli and Tania Canton.
Campedelli and Canton are driving a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo for their third outing on the FIA ERC season, switching from a Volkswagen Polo R5 they used in Italy and Poland.

Campedelli comes to Fafe off the back on several podiums finishes in the Italian Rally Championship – Gravel.

Team MRF Tyres has enjoyed a successful run over the previous weeks including a double podium in the Italian Rally Championship Gravel, a podium at the Azores Rallye and winning the Finnish Rally Championship with Emil Lindholm.

The challenge at Rally Serras de Fafe e Felgueiras cannot be underestimated.

There are 32 Rally2 cars gunning for outright victory in the FIA ERC and they will compete on 16 stages over 197.04 competitive kilometres.

The action gets underway on Friday with qualifying and the road order selection before the competition heats up on Saturday with eight stages and 113.22 km against the clock.

Sunday will see eight more stages including the legendary Fafe jump on SS12 and the final stage of the rally, SS16. Known as the Lameirinha stage, the jump will make for an exciting conclusion to the rally and day’s 83.82km of rallying.

Fans will be able to follow all stages on FIA ERC radio live and will be able to watch SS2 and SS6 (Saturday) and SS12 and SS16 (Sunday) live on the FIA ERC Facebook or YouTube streams.

You can follow Team MRF Tyres throughout the rally on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

    Quotes
Dani Sordo, Driver, Hyundai i20 R5
“I have a good feeling. We had a big test with MRF Tyres before the event. We have a lot of confidence as I have been here before and we had a good result. I am looking forward to it.”

“The last rally, we had a better result than we expected but we need to be clever and have some luck to have a chance to get the victory.”

“We are working a lot on the tyres and getting the information which is the priority. At the same time, to get good results is a great bonus.”

Simone Campedelli, Driver, Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo
“We have a positive start to the season with the MRF Tyres as we have had podiums in Italy and I am looking forward to getting back on stage in Portugal for the FIA ERC.”

“I have never been in Fafe before, but I have done my homework with MRF Tyres. We are concentrating on data and development, but we will try our maximum at the same time. There are many fast drivers so it will be a big challenge. I have been in the car before as I have tested with Skoda but the first time I have used it in a rally. We have tested before the rally to get to know it with MRF Tyres.”

“We have seen everything on that famous jump in Fafe. I think I will feel goosebumps as I remember this jump as a child watching videos of cars going over it. I was dreaming, as a child, to come to a rally driver and jump over it. You can think about it for a while but you have to remain focused!”

  • Jehan Daruvala gets another podium in Sochi: F2 Feature

Jehan Daruvala gets another podium in Sochi: F2 Feature

Sochi (Russia) 26 Sept. 2021: Ace Indian racing star Jehan Daruvala bagged his fourth podium of the season taking the 3rd place in a tricky Sochi Feature race won by Oscar Piastri who extended his lead in the Drivers’ standings with a commanding drive at the Sochi Autodrom. The Australian headed Théo Pourchaire across the line, with the Indian occupying the final spot on the podium.

“I am quite happy with the P3 in the Feature race. It was pretty tricky starting on the inside but we had good pace to get the podium in the end. Now another looong break before we go to Jeddah in December,” said the Mumbai-born Red Bull Junior driver.

Starting from pole position, Piastri retained his position at the head of the field at the start of the race, while Pourchaire moved ahead of Daruvala for second place at Turn 2. A fast-starting Ralph Boschung progressed into the top three, while championship-contending Guanyu Zhou slipped from fourth to eighth.

Piastri and Pourchaire slowly pulled away from the rest of the pack throughout the 28 laps, with Pourchaire briefly moving ahead of Piastri when he pitted one lap later than the PREMA driver. However, with his hot tyres, Piastri regained the net lead, which he did not concede for the remainder of the event.

Late drama for Boschung saw him retire, after being in contention for the podium for much of the race. With Daruvala third, local favourite Robert Shwartzman was fourth, ahead of Saturday’s Sprint Race victor Dan Ticktum.

    AS IT HAPPENED

21 cars lined up on the starting grid, with Felipe Drugovich ruled unfit to participate following his crash prior to the commencement of Saturday’s race. At the front, Zhou endured a difficult start and dropped four positions, while Daruvala slipped from second to fourth having been overtaken by Pourchaire and Daruvala.

Further back, Bent Viscaal was forced to retire for the second race in a row following contact with Roy Nissany – Nissany would later receive a five-second time penalty for the incident.

A brief Virtual Safety Car was deployed, with Lirim Zendeli peeling into the pits to replace his front wing, which had been stripped from his car on the opening lap.

When the action resumed, Marcus Armstrong and Liam Lawson battled for 12th, with the latter attempting the alternate strategy by starting on the medium tyres compared to those on the Super Softs around him.

Pourchaire sat just over one second behind Piastri in the fight for the lead, but was unable to make a push into DRS range. Jüri Vips became the second driver to retire as his car slowed on Lap 6 – he returned to the pits, but was forced to park up his car due to an issue.

Boschung became the first of the front-runners to pit for medium tyres, while Jake Hughes, who starred for HWA RACELAB on Saturday, began to struggle. He dropped behind Christian Lundgaard and Ticktum and would eventually finish at the back of the pack following a spin later in the race.

Prior to his one and only pit stop of the race, Ticktum displayed strong speed on his worn Super Softs, overtaking Lundgaard and Zhou in consecutive laps before pitting.

Back up at the front, Piastri opted to come in for a tyre change on Lap 9, while Pourchaire stayed out for an extra lap. The ART Grand Prix driver was called in on the following lap and emerged back onto the track ahead of Piastri – it appeared as though the team’s overcut attempt had been successful.

However, with tyres that were already up to temperature, Piastri drew alongside Pourchaire and got back ahead into Turn 5, taking the net lead. There were a handful of cars ahead of the duo, however they were all running the alternative strategy and yet to pit.

Over the following seven laps, Piastri and Pourchaire navigated their way through those who had yet to make a move into their pit boxes, with Piastri managing to stay out in front all the way to the chequered flag. Behind them, a battle was underway for the final position on the podium.

Boschung held third but was under pressure from Daruvala. In the Turn 13 braking zone on lap 22, Boschung had a sizeable lock-up and ran deep into the corner, allowing Daruvala to sweep through to take his fourth podium of the 2021 season.

Shwartzman also passed Boschung with relative ease after the Campos Racing driver’s error, as Ticktum, Zhou and Lawson closed in from behind. Boschung’s race was soon run, as his lock-up proved to be too much for the front left tyre. He suffered a puncture on the run into Turn 2 and was left with no choice but to park his car trackside and retire.

Shwartzman couldn’t close in on Daruvala in time to challenge for a podium position and settled for fourth, ahead of Ticktum and Zhou.

Lawson was the highest placed driver on the alternate strategy in seventh with the fastest lap, while MP Motorsport’s Richard Verschoor finished in eighth place for the second time this weekend.

Lundgaard was ninth for ART, while David Beckmann benefited from Boschung’s late retirement to move up into 10th and secure the final point on offer.

KEY QUOTE – OSCAR PIASTRI (PREMA Racing)

Another Feature Race win – two in a row! I am very happy with that, it was a very tough race with no Safety Cars. Théo (Pourchaire) was pushing me the whole way.

“I’m glad I could hold on, I could keep the gap at one and a half, two seconds. I was pushing the whole way. I’m very happy I could pull that one off after a bit of a disappointing day yesterday.”

    THE CHAMPIONSHIP VIEW

Piastri extends his championship lead and sits on 178 points, ahead of Zhou who has 142 to his name. Shwartzman is third on 135, with Ticktum and Pourchaire in fourth and fifth with 129 and 120 points respectively.

In the Teams’ fight, PREMA sits out in front on 313 points, leading Carlin with 225. Third in the order with 201 points is UNI-Virtuosi, while Hitech Grand Prix is fourth on 182 with ART Grand Prix fifth with 163 points.

  • Jehan Daruvala slips to 7th in F2 Sprint Race

Jehan Daruvala slips to 7th in F2 Sprint Race

Sochi (Russia), 25 Sept 2021: Ace Indian driver Jehan Daruvala of the Red Bull Academy had to be content with a P7 as his Carlin teammate Dan Ticktum converted reverse grid pole to victory at the Sochi Autodrom on Saturday, dominating the delayed Sprint Race 1 in Russia, the sixth round of the 8-round FIA Formula 2 World Championship. The race was postponed from Saturday morning to late afternoon, as treacherous conditions forced a deferred start time.

” I really don’t know what to say. The conditions were tricky out there but I managed to get myself into P5 and I was in contention for the podium. Then a mistake cost me,” he said with an apolegitic smiley. “Anyway, the positive is we had the pace and can show that in the Feature Race tomorrow,” the Indian, who won the Monza Sprint race, promised. He is currently in 7th place in the Champinship. Here is how Jehan Daruvala raced.

Jüri Vips was second on the road and bagged his fifth podium of the 2021 campaign, while Robert Shwartzman enjoyed a strong home race, taking the final podium position on offer in third place.

Ticktum was placed under pressure early in the race by Hitech Grand Prix’s Vips, however the Estonian driver couldn’t make the pass, not risking a move onto the wet surface that existed off the dry racing line.

From there, the Carlin driver pulled out a gap and stayed ahead of the pack to secure his second race win of the season.

    AS IT HAPPENED

There was drama before the race even got underway. On the way to the grid, the UNI-Virtuosi duo of Felipe Drugovich and Guanyu Zhou spun with the former making heavy contact with the wall and retiring. Zhou, who is currently in championship contention, managed to avoid the barriers but stalled his car and was unable to take the start of the race.

With just one dry racing line on the track following the morning’s torrential rain, the pack ran two formation laps behind the Safety Car before being released for a rolling start. All drivers kept it clean in the opening stages, with Vips and his Hitech teammate Liam Lawson threatening Ticktum’s lead.

The first of two Virtual Safety Cars was deployed on lap four after Bent Viscaal retired. Upon its conclusion some two laps later, championship leader Oscar Piastri got out of shape and was overtaken by ART Grand Prix’s Christian Lundgaard for 10th. But Piastri’s troubles were not over, as a further wide moment at Turn 10 saw him drop behind Marcus Armstrong and Richard Verschoor.

Back at the front, one driver was taken out of contention for the win as Lawson made a mistake at Turn 13 while running in third place, damaging the left rear of his car, which forced him to park his car in a run-off area. The mistake promoted Shwartzman into the final podium position.

Another VSC was needed to safely clear Lawson’s stricken Hitech, and at the succeeding restart, Jehan Daruvala pounced on Théo Pourchaire and Ralph Boschung to move into fifth. While Pourchaire settled into sixth after moving ahead of Boschung on the run into Turn 2.

At the halfway stage of the race, Ticktum held a four second lead, aided by a mistake from Vips at the final corner. However, Vips would soon eat back into the gap, bringing it back down to just over two seconds in the following laps.

Jake Hughes had a sniff at a podium finish for HWA RACELAB, having run in fourth place for much of the race following Lawson’s retirement. The Briton battled Shwartzman who made a mistake at Turn 10, the PREMA driver dropped behind Hughes for a few 100 metres before moving back ahead in the Turn 12 braking zone.

As the drivers searched for the extra points for the fastest lap, it was Pourchaire who prevailed, clocking a 1:50.669 on lap 16. However, trouble befell Carlin’s Daruvala, who spun at Turn 16 and dropped out of the points and into 12th in the final order.

With the top three consisting of Ticktum, Vips and Shwartzman, Hughes held off Pourchaire in the final laps to take fourth, marking HWA’s best-ever result in F2.

Ralph Boschung was sixth, surviving to the chequered flag despite a series of tyre lockups into Turn 2. Lundgaard was seventh ahead of Verschoor who took the final point up for grabs in eighth.

    KEY QUOTE –

Dan Ticktum (Carlin) “I’m pretty happy with that, it was sketchy to say the least, pretty scary! I said on the radio on the grid ‘if I’m scared, then it’s probably quite bad.’ To come away with a win is amazing.

“I’m very, very happy. Jüri was pretty fast, especially at the start. In the middle of the race, I heard he was closing the gap so I had to push a lot more. Taking risks in those sort of conditions is difficult, but I’m happy with the win.”

    THE CHAMPIONSHIP VIEW

Piastri and Zhou remain at the head of the Championship with 153 and 134 points respectively, despite failing to register points in the Sprint Race. Shwartzman has closed the gap and now sits on 123 points ahead of Ticktum on 119 and Vips on 102. PREMA remain top in the Teams’ battle with 276 points, ahead of Carlin on 200 points and UNI – Virtuosi, who have 193 points. Hitech Grand Prix are fourth with 174 while ART Grand Prix are fifth with 143 points

  • Jehan Daruvala posts stunning lap, misses pole by a whisker: F2

Jehan Daruvala posts stunning lap, misses pole by a whisker: F2

Oscar Piastri claimed his third consecutive pole position of the 2021 season in Russia, setting a blistering lap time of 1:47.465 at the Sochi Autodrom which was enough to beat Jehan Daruvala to the top spot. By adding four points to his championship tally, he further extends the gap to rival Guanyu Zhou, who was forced to settle for fourth place.

Sochi (Russia), 24 Sept 2021: Ace Indian driver and Red Bull Academy talent posted a stunning lap, but Piastri beat him after that by just 0.188 second in the qualifying session on Friday.

The Mumbai-born Indian prospect, driving for Carlin team is buoyed with the good session and will start the feature race on Sunday in P2 but for the Sprint race on Saturday he will be on P9 on the grid. “It was another close session and it was another P2 and I am really pleased with the session. The forecast for tomorrow is rain but the big one is on Sunday where I will start on the front row. The car is awesome and I thank Carlin, cheers,” said the Indian, who is considered as the best bet to become the next Indian in F1.

ART Grand Prix’s Christian Lundgaard was the first driver to emerge on the circuit at the start of Qualifying on Friday afternoon, with Ralph Boschung topping the timesheet at the end of the first runs with a 1:48.130.

However, after all drivers completed a cool down lap and then another push lap, it was Zhou who found himself positioned at the head of the leader board, becoming the first driver to dip into the 1:47s, while Daruvala moved into third position behind Piastri.

The cars then returned to the pits in preparation for the final runs. When the drivers returned to the track once more with 10 minutes to go, Piastri set the fastest time, going marginally faster than Zhou, who couldn’t improve on his third flying lap.

The fight for pole appeared to be on between the top two in the championship, however on his final push lap Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala found time to jump to the head of the table with a 1:47.653 and looked to be on for his maiden pole position in Formula 2.

However, the charging Piastri couldn’t be denied, and the Australian driver went almost two-tenths quicker than Daruvala to seal his third pole position of the season.

A late improvement for Théo Pourchaire saw him move into third place, while Zhou couldn’t improve on his final effort and was forced to settle for fourth, over half a second down on pole-sitter Piastri.

Boschung, who displayed strong pace in the Free Practice session as well as during Qualifying, was fifth fastest ahead of Jake Hughes, who makes another outing for HWA RACELAB this weekend.

Robert Shwartzman was seventh, while the Hitech Grand Prix duo of Liam Lawson and Juri Vips were eighth and ninth respectively, the latter securing a front-row start for Sprint Race 1. Rounding out the top ten and ensuring he would start on reverse pole for Saturday morning’s race was Carlin’s Dan Ticktum.

Sprint Race 1, which is forecast to be held in wet conditions, is set to get underway at 10:30am local time on Saturday.

  • Advait Deodhar finishes 5th in Race 1

Advait Deodhar finishes 5th in Race 1

Cavle, Near Rijeka (Croatia), 18 Sept 2021: Ace Indian driver Advait Deodhar finished 5th in Race of Round 7 in the NASCAR2 Whelen Euro Series here on Saturday.

But it was Martin Doubek, who got closer to the championship leader at Grobnik by winning EuroNASCAR 2 Round 7 in a tight battle against Vladimiros Tziortzis. A penalty for then race leader Tobias Dauenhauer had a crucial impact on the outcome of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series race at Automotodrom Grobnik.

For Doubek it was the third win of the season and the fifth of his career in EuroNASCAR 2. The Czech crossed the finish line just 0.465 seconds ahead of Vladimiros Tziortzis, who reached his goal of collecting big points in the first of two races at the NASCAR GP Croatia. The Cypriot attacked Doubek several times but never got past the Hendriks Motorsport driver.

“I don’t know what happened to Tobias but I think I would have caught him in two laps”, said Doubek, who is now only 28 points shy of championship leader Dauenhauer. “I got the lead and put the pedal down, but Vladimiros put a lot of pressure on me. It was a really stressful race for me. I did it and I collected the big points for me and my team, who did a great job. Now we are looking forward to tomorrow’s race!”

The two teammates will start side by side again tomorrow for Round 8, with Dauenhauer on pole and Doubek in second on the first row on the grid.

Justin Kunz rounded out the overall podium in third place and therefore collected the second EuroNASCAR 2 podium of his career. The German was battling with his DF1 Racing teammate Simon Pilate for third and got past the Belgian when he suffered a puncture late in the race. Not Only Motorsport’s Alberto Panebianco ended up fourth overall and topped the Rookie Trophy classification. It was already his second top-5 result in the 2021 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season.

Brands Hatch race winner Advait Deodhar was fifth under the checkered flag. The Indian gained one position after starting from sixth. He was followed by Tobias Dauenhauer, who served his penalty on lap 10. The sanction was due to unauthorized operations on the car on the grid and the German therefore got a drive through penalty in the race. The Hendriks Motorsport driver fell back to eighth and then fought his way back up the ranks.

NASCAR Whelen Euro Series newcomer Melvin de Groot not only surprised with a strong seventh place overall but also grabbed the win in the Legend Trophy for drivers aged 40 and more and the second place in the Rookie Trophy. The Dutchman, who’s racing for Team Bleekemolen, enjoyed every second of the competition and the pure power of the V8 beasts without any electronic driving aids.

He was followed by 42 Racing’s Francesco Garisto, DF1 Racing’s Gil Linster and CAAL Racing’s Max Lanza, who not only rounded out the top-10 but also took second in the Legend Trophy classification. Yevgen Sokolovskiy joined him on the podium in third with a twelfth place overall. Alina Loibnegger topped the Lady Trophy standings.

Making his EuroNASCAR 2 debut at the young age of 16, Leonardo Colavita ended up third on the Rookie Trophy podium by finishing eleventh. With 16 years and 3 days on his first day, Colavita got the new record of NWES’ all-time youngest driver – before him, it was Ben Creanor with the age of 16 years, 29 days.

Two strong title contenders both had very bad luck: Pierluigi Veronesi got off track on lap 3 and had to bring his Double V Racing car back to the pits. Naveh Talor parked his Not Only Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro on lap 10 with technical issues. Therefore, the Israeli didn’t score many points in the first EuroNASCAR 2 race at the Automotodrom Grobnik.

Both championships will return to action on Sunday: While EuroNASCAR 2 Round 8 begins at 10:10 am CEST, the second EuroNASCAR PRO race is scheduled for 2:25 pm CEST. All races will be broadcasted on EuroNASCAR’s social media channels – YouTube, Facebook, Twitch – as well as on the NWES App and Motorsport.tv.

    Deodhar qualifies P6

Earlier, Deodhar secured P6 in the qualifying of the  EuroNASCAR 2 even as the pole position for Round 7 went to Tobias Dauenhauer at the 4.168km Automotodrom Grobnik here on Saturday. Deodhar of CAAL Racing team clocked 1:31.047 in his #56 Ford Mustang. “P6 in qualifying today. Not ideal but it was my first time outing on this track in the dry as all practice sessions were in the wet. looking forward to the race,” said Deodhar after the qualies.

Tobias did a 1:29.830 lap in the closing stages of the 30-minute session to get the pole. It wasn’t easy though for the current points leader, as the Hendriks Motorsport team had to quickly work on a technical issue to the brakes of the #50 Mustang and Dauenhauer had only a few minutes to post his best time.

Vladimiros Tziortzis, at the wheel of the #1 Academy Motorsport / Alex Caffi Motorsport Mustang, was just 0.167 seconds slower than the German and held the lead for most of the session, which was interrupted by a red flag to recover the stopped car of Leonardo Colavita. Martin Doubek drove the #7 Hendriks Motorsport Mustang to third ahead of the DF1 Racing duo of Simon Pilate and Justin Kunz. The top-5 drivers were separated by just 1 second.

Advait Deodhar was the first CAAL Racing driver in sixth and edged the first Rookie Trophy contender Alberto Panebianco, driving the #89 Not Only Motorsport Camaro. Max Lanza took eighth place and the lead in the Legend Trophy just ahead of the #48 Marko Stipp Motorsport Camaro of Yevgen Sokolovskiy.

In his first outing on a dry track aboard the #69 Team Bleekemolen Mustang, Melvin de Groot rounded out the top-10.

All the races of the NASCAR GP Croatia from Automotodrom Grobnik will be streamed live from 13:35 CEST on the EuroNASCAR social media platforms – Youtube, Facebook and Twitch – as well as on the NWES app and on Motorsport.tv.

  • Arjun Maini raring to go at Assen: DTM Series

Arjun Maini raring to go at Assen: DTM Series

Assen (The Netherlands), 17 Sept. 2021: Mercedes-AMG DTM star Arjun Maini is set to take part in the sixth round of the DTM championship at the Assen race track in Holland.

The Omega Seiki and J.K.Tyre backed driver has had a renaissance of sorts with the Indian turning a torrid run of luck into consistent points finishes over the course of the past two rounds. Coming off his best ever weekend in Germany’s premier racing series, with a sixth and seventh-place finish in Austria marking his best-ever return in the DTM Championship, Maini is filled with confidence as he looks to climb up the championship ladder.

The Assen race circuit will represent a unique challenge to the Indian as he has never raced competitively on the track.

“While I haven’t raced competitively at the Assen race circuit, I do have testing experience at the track,” Maini stated.

“The last two weekends have been positive in terms of overall results and I’m confident about my chances heading into the weekend. It’s important to note that this is GetSpeed’s first year racing in DTM too, which means we don’t have too much data to draw from heading into the weekend.

“That being said, we have worked tirelessly to address our lack of experience at certain race circuits and I think we have made good progress through the season especially after hitting our nadir at Zolder.”

Having secured consecutive points finishes for the first time, Maini’s next objective will be a podium finish. While the competitive nature of the DTM championship makes this a lofty goal, the Indian’s consistent improvement and raw pace over the course of the season provides cause for hope, especially if his race strategy is executed to perfection.

The sessions can be watched on https://www.youtube.com/user/autocarindia1, with Race 1 taking place on September 18, and Race two flagging off on September 19.

  • An island adventure for Team MRF Tyres in the ERC

An island adventure for Team MRF Tyres in the ERC

San Miguel (Portugal), 16 Sept. 2021: Team MRF Tyres returns to the FIA European Rally Championship as the second half of the season gets underway with the Azores Rallye held in the Portuguese island of San Miguel.

WRC ace and multiple winner, Dani Sordo joins the team as the aggressive development push continues.

Cándido Carrera will sit beside Sordo in the MRF Tyres Hyundai i20 R5 for the first of the Portuguese rounds that takes place on the Azores archipelago, some two hours flying time off the Portuguese mainland.

The Azores Rallye sees the Championship return to gravel, and with the volcanic nature of the island, the surface will present a unique challenge to the crews.

With 13 stages and 201km of competitive action, the crews will face a series of long stages. To complicate matters, the weather on the Azores is notoriously fickle, where rain and fog can come and go at a moment’s notice.

The rally commences on Thursday with free practice and qualifying with a blast around the 3.12km Lagoa test, which will help determine the starting order for the Friday stages.

Friday takes the crews into the forest on the east of the island where the crews will face six stages and 111.90km of competitive action.

The drivers will have to concentrate from the first kilometres as a 24.03 km Graminhais test starts the rally. Immediately, the 21.89km Tronqueira 1 stage follows before the 15.96km Lagoa de São Brás completes the leg.

The first two stages are repeated in the afternoon loop but the final stage of the day is a run around the spectator super special stage of Grupo Marques.

Saturday is the final day of the 55th Azores Rallye and sees seven stages and 88.84km of competitive action. The day starts to the north of the Ponta Delgada service park with the 11.40km Coroa da Mata stage.

Feteiras follows at 7.46km before the legendary 24.01km Sete Cidades stage takes the crews around the edge of the volcano on the east of the island. A second run around the spectator super special stage ends the loop.

The final three stages are a repeat of the morning’s three stages, meaning that the rally will end on the spectacular Sete Cidades stage. Ending the rally on a 24.01km stage means that concentration is needed to the final metres.

Team MRF Tyres along with Sordo and Carrera will be looking for important data on this unique surface.
Fans on the Azores can spectate in a Covid-19 safe manor and those at home can follow each stage live on FIA ERC radio (www.fiaerc.com/live-radio).

The pre-event press conference will be live-streamed on Thursday. Stages two and five will be streamed on Friday and stages nine and 13 will be streamed on Saturday. The FIA ERC will host their live streams on Facebook and YouTube.

You can follow Team MRF Tyres throughout the rally on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

    Quotes
Dani Sordo, Driver, Hyundai i20 R5

“It is the first time that I am in the Azores and the first time I am with MRF Tyres. I have to say it looks amazing. I was happy with the conditions in testing and the MRF Tyres worked well.”

“I am happy to be here to help develop the tyres. They have a lot of potential and running here this weekend will gain a lot of data for the development.”

“Primarily we are here to develop the tyre but we also want to fight for a good result. I am looking forward to starting the rally.”
