Historic F4 victory for Jaden Pariat on debut; Lancaster wins IRL race

Chennai, 24 August 2024: Seventeen-year-old Jaden Rahman Pariat from Shillong, who was crowned the Formula 2000 Indian National Champion last Sunday at the same venue, made history by becoming only the third Indian to win a race in the F4 Indian Championship. Both the races were filled with drama, twists, and turns. In the other race, veteran Jon Lancaster from Leeds, England, claimed victory in the Indian Racing League during Round 1 of the Indian Racing Festival at the Madras International Circuit on Saturday.

Promoted by Racing Promotions Private Limited, and presented by Kingfisher Soda, the second edition of the Indian Racing League and the Indian F4 Championship kicked off with eight teams and 16 drivers while the IRL had six teams with 24 drivers, including female racers competing on equal footing with their male counterparts. In the first edition of F4 India, only Shahan Ali Mohsin and Rishon Rajiv had race wins, and Jaden, Bangalore Speedsters driver, joins the elite group, with this victory which fell on his lap, in the last lap, well almost.

“Oh man!, it was so difficult to keep the car on the track. All I can say is that, THANK YOU, ALMIGHTY! I had gear box issues. But I managed to move to P2. I did not know what went wrong with him (Aqil Alibhai). But before that, I was wide and did manage to keep my place as Ruhaan failed to capitalise on it. After the start, I saw him move away. But I persisted in my third place and it paid dividends. In the end, I cam around and saw that his car was parked. I said oh my God, I just need to finish,” that is how Jaden put his thoughts about the race.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Blackbirds team had a challenging afternoon. First, Hugh Barter of GodSpeed Kochi retired from the F4 Indian Championship race while poised for an easy victory, handing the win to Pariat of Bangalore Speedsters. Later, Hyderabad Blackbirds driver, Swiss ace Neel Jani, also retired just as he was about to secure a win, gifting the victory to Chennai Turbo Riders’ Lancaster.

Though Lancaster and Pariat shone, Ruhaan Alva, the teenager from Bengaluru racing for Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, earned praise for his podium finishes in both races, which remained uncertain until the very end.

The 39-year-old Lancaster triumphed in a dramatic IRL Race 1 for A Drivers. Pole-sitter Alva dropped to fifth after going off the track midway through the race, allowing Lancaster to take the lead ahead of Jani. However, Lancaster went wide exiting Turn 2, and Jani took the lead. In a final twist, with three minutes and one lap remaining, Jani retired, and Lancaster regained the lead, with Portugal’s Alvaro Parente (Speed Demons Delhi) finishing second, ahead of the fast-finishing Alva, who climbed back to P3 after some impressive laps. The positions remained unchanged at the finish. “That’s racing for you. I took my chances,” said Lancaster. Alva earned bonus points for the fastest lap of the race and pole position.

In the Formula 4 Indian race, Pariat set the stage for his campaign in the first lap, overtaking Alva to move into P3 behind Hyderabad Blackbirds teammates Barter and Aqil Alibhai (South Africa). Despite a strangely tilted rear wing, Barter built a massive lead, which he maintained until the final lap before retiring. Prior to that, Alibhai had comfortably held off Pariat, but the South African noticeably lost pace in the final laps, allowing Pariat to catch up and move into P2. In the final lap, with Barter’s retirement, Pariat took the lead and secured a well-deserved victory. Alibhai just managed to hold off Alva for second, with the Bengaluru driver completing the podium.

“I don’t know what to say. When I saw Barter parked on the back loop, I knew I had a chance to win, and I told myself to just bring the car home safely, which I did. I must thank God for this win. There’s no other way to describe it,” said Jaden.

Formula LGB 4: Coimbatore’s Bala Prasath secured a thrilling victory in the Formula LGB 4 class, with the top three finishers separated by less than a second. The eight-lap race saw Prasath fend off a strong challenge from the MSport pair of teenager Abhay Mohan and veteran Raghul Rangasamy, while pole-sitter Dark Don Racing’s Viswas Vijayaraj from Nellore finished a distant 16th.

RE Continental Cup: As expected, Bengaluru’s Anish Shetty took the top spot in the Professionals class, delivering a strong performance after starting from P2 on the grid behind pole-sitter Abhishek Vasudev, also from Bengaluru. Vasudev finished 10th due to a puncture, while Shetty comfortably won the first race of the double-header, with over four seconds to spare ahead of Puducherry’s Navaneeth Kumar. Bengaluru’s Jagadeesh Nagaraj completed the podium.

Further down the grid, another Bengaluru driver, Yogesh P, topped the Amateur class, finishing ahead of Johring Waris (Umrangso, Assam) and Nijin A (Pathanamthitta, Kerala).

Chennai, 23 August 2024: The 2024 Indian Formula 4 (F4) Championship promises to be a showcase of rising stars from across the globe, with drivers as young as 15-years-old ready to take on the track. Each team brings a mix of fresh talent and experienced contenders, adding intrigue to the championship.

    Goa Aces JA Racing

Leading the charge for Goa Aces is 16-year-old Australian Giancarlo Artho, the first driver announced for the team. Artho made headlines as one of the 24 drivers chosen for the 2023 Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) Asia-Pacific selections, although he missed qualifying for the final round. Despite the setback, Artho rebounded by winning the F4 Global Shootout Program (FGSP), securing a coveted free seat for his single-seater debut.

Joining Artho is 17-year-old Aiva Anagnostiadis, who made history as the team’s first female driver. Cooper Webster is first Indian F4 champion; Rishon wins a race

Irungattukottai (Tamil Nadu), 17 Dec 2023: Cooper Webster has added to Australia’s growing list of international titles after securing the Indian F4 Championship on the weekend.

In what has been a highly-impressive 2023 campaign for Webster, the Victorian managed to wrap up the Indian championship midway through the final round of the season at the Madras International Circuit, near Chennai, adding to his runner-up GB4 Championship finish earlier in the year.

Webster didn’t need to do much to win the title having built up a solid lead in the previous four rounds, but the 20-year-old chose to finish on a high and started off with a perfect outing on Saturday with pole position in both qualifying sessions.

Webster then converted his pole position to a Race 1 victory thanks to a dominant performance where he led from lights to flag and crossed the line 11 seconds ahead of Akshay Bohra.

On Sunday morning, Webster dropped to third in the second race, as 2023 Ferrari Driver Academy Asia Pacific and Oceania Selection Programme participant Rishon Rajeev of Bengaluru picked up his first race win of the year.

The Australian didn’t have to wait very long to get back onto the top step of the podium though after another solid outing in the event’s third race saw him record his eighth win of the year and seal the title with an unassailable lead.

Rajeev did manage to get a minor consolation prize of a podium in the final race, as Webster finished couple of places behind in fifth – ultimately ending the year with 282.5 points – more than 60 points ahead of the second placed Rajeev on the standings.

The Aussie also managed to clock up the fastest lap in three of the four races in the final round, taking his total to seven fastest laps for the season, while also scoring five pole positions.

A Motorsports Australia post said: In addition to Webster, young driver Jack Taylor continued his first ever open wheel season with three top 10 finishes out of four races – his best result being the final race of the year where he finished seventh.

In addition to his impressive seventh place finish, Taylor also finished eighth and ninth respectively throughout the round, while being forced to retire in the round’s second race.

After making his karting debut in a full season in 2017, Rohaan dominated the karting scene and took a podium finish in the Asia Max Championship at Malaysia. Later in 2018, he represented India at the X30 World Championship in France, and the next year he took part in the Rotax World Finals, also in France. In 2021, he won the X30 National Championship and went on to win the Rotax Max Nationals in 2022. And the highlight of his career came at the Rotax Max World Finals at Portimao, Portugal, where he won a heat and also qualified for the finals, a proud achievement for an Indian karter.

“I am really excited and looking forward to competing in the Indian F4 Championship. India is where I started racing and it’s a privilege to continue doing so right here at home with the Indian F4,” he said after his name was announced for the event.

“I would like to thank the sponsors and organisers for making this dream possible. I am honoured and I am very proud to be part of the maiden F4 in India,” the Peregrine Racing product concluded.

F4 Indian Championship is a single-seater motorsport series based in India. The series is run to the FIA’s Formula 4 regulations and is organised by Racing Promotions Private Limited. The inaugural season’s first race was originally scheduled to be held at the Hyderabad Street Circuit which hosted the Formula E last season, but was shifted to MIC as the Telangana Elections were announced.

Jaden Pariat selected for Ferrari Driver Academy trials

Banbury (UK) 16 August 2023: Rising Indian motorsport star Jaden R Pariat has been invited to the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) selection trials, as one of the best young talents in the Asia Pacific and Oceania region.

The prestigious Ferrari Academy selection trials begin on September 23 at Sepang. The drivers will take part in track walks, engineer meetings, fitness testing, and importantly time behind the wheel of a Tatuus FIA F4-T421 machine on track. The top five drivers then head to the FDA Scouting World Finals in Maranello.

Jaden Pariat who moved to the UK in 2022, is taking part in the full F4 British Championship with Phinsys by Argenti team. On his impressive debut weekend, the then 15-year-old scored a spot on the Rookie Cup podium, exemplifying his winning potential before getting a memorable podium victory at Donington Park.

While more than 100 drivers applied the Ferrari Driver Academy programme, Jaden is selected as one of 25 drivers for six different countries who will now head to Sepang International Circuit for the five-day assessment process.

Announcing the selection result Jaden Pariat said from his base in UK: “I am extremely happy to have been chosen to take part in the Ferrari Driver Academy selection trials in Malaysia. I have learned so much in almost a year of racing in the F4 British Championship and looking forward to trials for the Ferrari Driver Academy.”

“It will be an enjoyable five days I am sure and there will be plenty for me to take away from the experience. But I am definitely going in with the intention of making it to the final five and hopefully, heading to Maranello for the World Finals,” the Shillong driver added.

The Scuderia Ferrari programme aims to bring on talented youngsters and takes its inspiration from a comment made by Enzo Ferrari: “I love to think that Ferrari can make drivers as well as cars.” The Ferrari Driver Academy is not just a race driving school. It is a true academy where all aspects of their chosen profession are taught in a meticulous manner. Over the years, many of the Academy students have gone on to race at a high level. Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher among others made it all the way to Formula 1.

Michael Smith of Motorsport Australia, who will be conducting the trials, said:“We’re looking forward to hosting 25 of the best young drivers from the Asia Pacific region. It’s exciting to see more drivers from outside of Australia in the FDA selections.”

Injured Jaden Pariat returns with rich experience: British F4

Snetterton (Norfolk, England), 22 May 2023: It was a disappointing end to a well-prepared week-end but Indian racing talent Jaden Pariat is high in spirits as he says, “there is much to learn and I have enjoyed the week-end despite not being able to get a result. It is racing and these things happen and it is disappointing but a rich experience,” he said philosophically, talking to INDIAinF1 from the venue, on Sunday.

Jaden Pariat headed to Snetterton in Norfolk at the weekend beginning May 19 for rounds seven, eight, and nine of the F4 British Championship that concluded on May 21, Sunday, but left without any official race results.

After a tight and fiercely-contested qualifying session on Saturday, the youngster from Northeast India was just one second off pole position around the three-mile circuit – the second longest on this season’s calendar.

The opening race began later that afternoon, but after just one lap Jaden was involved in an incident which damaged his car and put him into retirement. However, with a red flag then being shown the race was restarted a little later before again being red flagged for another incident. With damage to the barriers and time running out to complete the contest, the race was voided and instead will be added to the weekend at Donington Park in August.

Unfortunately for Jaden, he hurt his wrist during his contact and, though he was cleared at hospital, he wasn’t allowed to take part in Sunday’s races, meaning he recorded no official results across the weekend.

The teenager will return to the F4 British Championship with Phynsis by Argenti in two weeks’ time, over the weekend of June 3/4, at the UK’s fastest circuit, Thruxton in Hampshire.

“Saturday was unfortunate. The contact hurt my wrist which will stop me from doing any driving for a while. The race was going well and I was quite happy with the moves that I had made, it was just unfortunate to have had contact.

“I feel better and although the decision was maybe not we wanted, in the long term at least we’re sure we’ll be fit to race well. We will miss a few days of testing which will put me on the back foot, as during the season we don’t get many test days, so they are important.

“I’m happy that I got to supprt the team from the outside and happy for the team’s results this weekend. We would have had a chance for the podium in the last race, but I’m looking forward to putting in lots of hard work so we can get back in the car as soon as possible and push at Thruxton!”

  • Rain-master Jaden Pariat qualifies in superb P5: British F4 Championship

Rain-master Jaden Pariat qualifies in superb P5: British F4 Championship

Brands Hatch (England) 6 May 2023: Indian racing talent Jaden R Pariat’s valiant effort in wet conditions got him a superb P5 in the qualifying session of the ROKiT British F4 Championship here on Saturday.

Saturday morning saw a curtailed, wet qualifying session which set the grids for the first and third races of this weekend’s schedule. Jaden put a lap in the bank anticipating more rain and also did a second best lap that put him on P5 for Race 3. The first race of Sunday, Race 2 will see a reverse grid. Each round has three races and after the opener in Donington Park where Jaden secured a podium in Race 2, Saturday’s race was the fourth of the 30-race season. Two more races will be held on Sunday and dry conditions are predicted.

“We had a solid qualifying today, followed by a very eventful race. I took to the track in the midst of a slight drizzle and it was all about banking a lap in-case the rain intensified. Happily my time was good enough for fifth fastest. My second fastest time got me P7 for Race 1. There was a bit more left in the tank and pole was only three tenths up the road, so we were in the mix,” said the 16-year Indian after the qualifying session.

“I got a bit of a wheel-spin off the line on the damp surface and dropped a few places. In trying to make-up places, I made a move into Turn 1 causing me to have contact with another driver, so I lost our front wing and I had to pit,” the Shillong-born Jaden, added.

The karting sensation, who made Bengaluru his home for better part last year, before shifting to England for a full season in the British F4 championship this year narrated how he fought back gaining five places after his pit-stop. “The team did a good job to get me back out and, when the race restarted with five minutes on the clock, I made some decent progress, gaining five places in two laps. Sadly, I ran out of time to gain further places. Let’s see what tomorrow brings,” he concluded.

Jaden finally finished 12th. He will start P13 in Race 2 on Sunday but watch-out for Race 3 where he is expected to fight with the front-runners starting from P5.

For the record, James Higgins (Fortec Motorsport) secured the Omologato Pole Position Award and first position start for both Races 1 and 3, after he set two fastest laps early in the session anticipating the rain to worsen. Teams had hoped the conditions would dry towards the end of the session, however continuing rain saw conditions worsen and a red flag for a stranded car ultimately ended the session early, preventing further challenges.

  • Historic result for Jaden; only Indian in six years to get a British F4 podium

Historic result for Jaden; only Indian in six years to get a British F4 podium

Leicestershire (UK), 23 April 2023: Young Indian racing star Jaden Pariat of Argenti Motorsport displayed his immense talent with a podium in the first round of the ROKiT British F4 Championship at Donington Park here on Sunday. He is only the second Indian to get an international podium in a Tatuus F4 car after Kush Maini’s podium in 2017.

“The podium is being hailed as a big milestone for the younger generation looking to break-through to higher levels of Formula racing. We are overwhelmed by the congratulatory messages and thank everyone who stood by us,” said Atikur Rehman, a former Indian national rally star and the force behind Jaden, who last year took a rookie podium in one of the two rounds he took part.

The 16-year motorsports athlete from supported by Minerva’s Virtual Academy, Lyca Radio and Bobatree, scored a creditable Overall third place in Race 2. He overcame initial hiccups in the qualification session and took a P17 after slipping from P5 as he came for a tyre change and fell short of laps due to a red flag following an incident in front of him.

Jaden Pariat, historic 3rd in six years after Kush Maini’s podium in 2017.

Showing good pace and consistently the fastest of the four Phinsys by Argenti drivers in Thursday’s practice sessions, the teenager, from Northeast India, had high hopes of impressing as he started his first full year in the series. Joined on Saturday by lucky Lyca Radio competition winners who enjoyed VIP access to the British F4 paddock, Jaden was keen to put on a show for his guests.

Heading into qualifying on Saturday, Jaden was just 0.7s from pole position, but with the grid so closely matched, finished 18th fastest. However, his consistency paid off on second quickest times, as he would line up 13th for race one that afternoon and fourth for the reversed grid contest.

Sadly, the teenager loaded the clutch too much on the line meaning the car switched off before the lights went out for the first race, falling down the order. However, he would have a chance to make amends as the red flag was shown when a rival went into the gravel. Starting 17th for the restart, he had a superb launch to gain two spots before he made it to turn one and, continuing to battle, making up five places in total, crossing the line 12th.

Starting fourth for the fully reversed grid race, held in difficult, cool, and wet conditions on Sunday morning, Jaden drove well to avoid trouble with many of his rivals spinning off or coming into strife. Holding his own – when rival teammates came together in front of him – he crossed the line third for a superb maiden podium in the series.

The third and final race of the weekend provided yet more challenging conditions with rain falling once again – at times heavily – making for a slippery track surface. Marking a promising end to the opening weekend of the season, the young driver made up an excellent six places to finish 12th once again.

“Logging important points in the bag after a tough week-end, it was important to cash in on the little chances we had,” said Jaden, who had very little seat time in the Championship car.

“I’m very satisfied with the results we achieved. I am super happy to have gotten an overall podium for Race 2. With wet conditions and a whole lot of chaos ahead of us, it is great work by the team. I am surrounded by the amazing support from everyone at Lyca Radio and my team Argenti. I can’t wait for the next race,” added Jaden.

    Grid 1 – 13, R1 – 12
    G2 – 4, R2 – 3
    G3 – 18, R3 – 12

    Championship: 12 (11 points)

“Qualifying was very tight. We definitely had the pace in the first stint, we were up with the front runners and well into the points. Unfortunately, on our second stint, it took some time for the tyres to come in, and then when it looked like we were set to complete our fastest lap, the red flag cut it short. We didn’t get the opportunity to see where we truly could have been, but it’s so close, so that could have happened to anyone, even one tenth can make such a huge difference.

“For race one, the initial start wasn’t great. I loaded the clutch too much and the car switched off, but it happened just before the lights went out, so I did lose a little bit of time there, but I wasn’t too far behind the pack. The two laps that we had before the safety car, were pretty strong and we gained three places. Luckily, after the red flag we had a full restart, and I had a much better start that time, making up some places during the race.

“Race two was really chaotic, with a lot of cars going off and a lot of drama happening in front of me, but we kept it clean. We played it smart, trying to always calculate what was about to happen. We were patient and in the end that really paid off. I’m really happy with third, it’s a great feeling to be back on the podium, and for it to come on the first weekend of the season is really promising.

“The third race was good, unfortunately we were held up a lot by the two cars I was battling with. We had the pace to be in the points, but it’s racing, and these things happen. I’m happy with how my race craft has been improving, I made two moves that I’m quite proud of. It’s sometimes difficult to find the correct balance of pushing to the limit and holding back, but I think we managed it well. There were a few close calls, but we kept it clean the whole weekend.

“It’s been great to work with everyone at Argenti, we have a good relationship and continue to give each other input and feedback that has been pushing us forward together. I’m happy with how the team have been supporting me and the car they’ve given me this weekend. I hope I can bring home some more good results and podiums for them.

“It was an honour to welcome the Lyca Radio competition winners into the paddock, as well as representatives from the station. To have achieved the podium whilst they were here to see was very special, and I can’t thank them enough for their continued support.”

The Championship now moves to Brands Hatch for the next three races on 6-7 May.

  • Ruhaan makes a strong debut in GB4 with two P7 finishes in points

Ruhaan makes a strong debut in GB4 with two P7 finishes in points

Oulton Park (UK), 8 April 2023: Indian racing star Ruhaan Alva made a strong debut, a Baptism by fire, in the British GB4 Championship finishing in the top 10 twice as he returns to racing in the European circuits at Cheshire’s Oulton Park where the Round 1 concluded on Sunday.

He did suffer an unfortunate mechanical issue that pulled him down in Race 2 but is confident to come back stronger. “I am eagerly looking forward to getting back in the car,” Ruhaan, who is sponsored by JK Tyre and backed by Vamcy Merla Sports Foundation, said.

A grid of 15 aspiring single-seater stars of the future assembled at Oulton Park for the start of the new GB4 season last weekend. Three different winners from the season opener suggest another wide-open season is in store, and you can watch all the action again here. Ruhaan Alva did a commendable job and showed enough pace which is expected to improve further as works with his engineers on the car set-up ahead of Round 2 in May.  You can watch the Round 1 races here.

    Ruhaan Alva

The Bengaluru teenager started from P9 in his Tatuus F4 T014 #27 car and managed a creditable seventh in the first race after showing admirable pace in his very first race on debut in the GB4 series. Later, due to some issues he logged a DNF after his anti-fog seal broke and filled up his visor leading to a blind drive behind the safety car that caused contact with a car in front of him, and his race ended abruptly. However, the 16-year-old came back strongly in Race 3 on Sunday for another point finish in the top 10, taking seventh place again in the 15-car grid, 14 of them new for the season like Ruhaan. The Indian will take part in all 21 races over 7 weekends and will use this as a platform to get into bigger things like FIA Formula 3.

“It was a great experience with a lot of learning for me,” said Ruhaan after the race weekend. After initial hiccups in qualifying, he saw that despite an issue with the floor which was dragging on the ground, Ruhaan managed a decent lap to get a P9 position. In Race 1, he did launch nicely off the line and after a comfortable race, he was left with a bit of defending which he did admirably to keep the drivers behind him in check and took a creditable seventh among many racers who had a better saddle time and experience on the circuit.

Race 2, did not go according to expectations. It was raining heavily and most of the race ran behind the Safety Car. The anti-fog seal of Ruhaan’s helmet broke leading to the visor getting filled up with water which caused complete fogging. “I was driving blind under the safety car. The car in front of me braked hard, and I couldn’t see him,” revealed Ruhaan about the conditions that forced him to make a contact. It did damage his front wing and the Master Cylinder that holds the brake fluid resulting in an unfortunate DNF in Race 2.

Ruhaan Alva is in a relaxed mood at Oulton Park ahead of Round 1.

The talented Indian karting champion, who graduated from Formula Cars, won the IRL league recently for his team. In Race 3, he was pretty confident and had fun racing, with a lot of battles on a drying track. The pace was decent but he got stuck behind a slower car in the initial stages which caused him to drop back a bit. Once he was able to pass the slower car, Ruhaan was able to climb up the order making two passes on the last lap and once again took a decent P7. “We had a few issues with the engine throughout the weekend and the team is working on it for the next round in the first week of May. I am confident to come back better equipped,” was the parting shot of Ruhaan, son of former Indian rally star Umakanth Alva.
