Rajini, Jagan bounce back; Jennifer, Samrul win
Chennai, 7 August 2022: Veterans Rajini Krishnan (RACR Castrol Power1) and Jagan Kumar (Petronas TVS Racing) bounced back in style with superb victories to provide a fitting climax to the third round of the MRF MMSC fmsci Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship 2022 at the Madras International Circuit, here on Sunday.
Also notching impressive wins on the day were Hyderabad’s Md Samrul Zubair (Race’ists Motorcycle Club) in the Novice (Stock 165) category after starting 21st on the grid and local rider, Ann Jennifer (Alpha Racing), the former champion, in the Girls (Stock 165cc) class.
Rajini, chasing his 11th National title, shrugged off a third place finish yesterday to win handily in the next outing today in the premier Pro-Stock 301-400cc Open category to stretch his championship lead to 51 points.
Rajini’s two decades of racing experience was very much in evidence as he paced himself brilliantly and bided his time starting from P3 before making his move while keeping in mind the track condition which initially was damp following spots of light drizzle before the start. He also dealt with close attention from the Petronas TVS Racing pair of Deepak Ravikumar and Race-1 winner KY Ahamed with panache to notch his fifth win in sixth starts. “I did not really push because of the track conditions, and later eased off just a bit,” said Rajini who now leads Ravikumar by 51 points in the championship standings.
In contrast, last year’s champion Jagan Kumar, who missed the previous round owing to a wrist injury he suffered in the Rolon Round at Coimbatore in June, and still nursing a painful right wrist, recorded his first win of the season in the other premier category, the Pro-Stock 165cc Open, to end a drought that stretched to 10 months and 12 races.
Jagan made the best of the situation that saw front-running and yesterday’s winner Rajiv Sethu (Idemitsu Honda SK69 Racing) crashing early in the eight-lap race and later, new leader Deepak Ravikumar, also of Petronas TVS Racing, retiring in the second-half of the race. Needing no second invitation, Jagan blasted past team-mate KY Ahamed and Pacer Yamaha’s Prabhu Arunagiri to victory. Arunagiri, who led briefly after Sethu’s exit, finished second ahead of Ahamed. Championship leader Mathana Kumar (Pacer Yamaha) came in fifth and enjoys a 28-point cushion over Sethu.
Earlier, Md Samrul Zubair came up with a brilliant performance to win the Novice (Stock 165cc) category race which he started from P21. The race also ended a five-win streak of Hubballi’s Sarvesh Balappa (Axor Sparks Racing) who finished ninth. However, Balappa remains at the top of the championship standings in this category with a 36-point lead over Bengaluru teenager Chiranth Vishwanath (Rookies Racing) who finished third behind Mumbai’s Kayan Zubin Patel (Axor Sparks Racing) in today’s race.
Meanwhile, Ann Jennifer scored her second win of the season after the two front-runners, Ryhana Bee (Pacer Yamaha) and Lani Zena Fernandez (RACR Castrol Power1) crashed in consecutive laps at the same spot exiting the last corner. For much of the five-lap race, the battle raged in front between Ryhana and Lani, with Ann lying in third. However, with the two in front crashing but subsequently recovering to finish the race, it was a comfortable win for Ann who thus moved to the top of the championship standings in this category with 60 points.
Others who maintained their unbeaten run were:
Idemitsu Honda India Talent Cup – Sarthak Shrikant Chavan from Pune (NSF 250, 6 wins); Raheesh Mudassar Khatri from Mumbai (CBR 150, 6 wins).

Arjun Maini gets ready for 24-hours of Spa; Kush gears up for Budapest F3
Belgium/Hungary, 28 July 2022: Arjun and Kush Maini will once again be representing India on the world stage as the brothers get ready to compete in the 24 Hours of Spa and the FIA Formula 3 Championship respectively this weekend.
Arjun’s race will take place this weekend, July 29-31, at the historic Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in Belgium with the 24-year-old racing his HRT Mercedes AMG GT3 in the car number 5 in the Gold-Cup category. The 24 Hours of Spa is considered the most important endurance event on the GT3 calendar with several prominent racers from around the world lining up on the grid.
Arjun will share his driving duties alongside HRT team owner Hubert Haupt as well as German driver Florian Scholze and Italian Gabriel Piana. There will be several prominent manufactures alongside Mercedes who will also be entering the event, with the likes of Audi, Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Bentley, Lamborghini and Aston Martin on the grid as well.
“I’m excited to take part in my first ever 24 Hours of Spa,” Arjun Maini commented.
“To race at such a historic race circuit at such an iconic event is a real privilege and I’m hoping we as a team can secure a strong result.”
“The race won’t be easy and I’ll have to draw on all my DTM experience to make the most of the pace of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and while the format of the event is drastically different to the sprint races I’m used to, I’m still hoping I can leverage my familiarity with the car and the experience that I have from the 24 hours of Lemans to do the best job possible for the team.”
Kush who drives car number 12 on the other hand will compete at Budapest as FIA F3 Championship which reconvenes for the sixth round of the championship. Maini, who is backed by Mumbai Falcons, Omega Seiki and JK Racing, has displayed great pace in the series so far and has been unfortunate to not secure his first podium in the championship.
With 30 of the world’s best junior racers all vying for glory, competing in the F3 championship is no mean feat, with Maini aware of the challenges which lie ahead.
“While the end result maybe lacking, I’m confident in my ability to end the season strongly,” Kush Maini stated.
“The MP Motorsports team have done a great job so far of providing me with a car that is capable of racing at the front and with a bit more luck I’m sure we’d have secured a podium finish by now.”
“Nevertheless, it is important for me to keep pushing to ensure that result comes and I’m working as hard as ever to ensure I finish the season strongly.”
“I’m also grateful to the support I have received from my sponsors Omega Seiki and JK Racing and am Proud of my association with the Mumbai Falcons whose Livery is carried on my car from the Silverstone race onwards.”
Kush’s race in Budapest will take place on the final weekend of July, alongside F1 races between the 29-31and can be viewed live in India on the Star Sports Select 2 and HD channel.
Arjun’s Race on Saturday starts at 8 pm IST and can be seen Live at the https://www.gt-world-challenge-europe.com/ website.

Shriya Lohia among 14 rising stars for ‘FIA Girls on Track’ event at Paul Ricardo
Bengaluru, 18 July 2022: Young Indian racing talent Shriya Lohia, who created ripples by bagging the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for 2022, earlier this year, added another feather in her young career as her name was announced in the list of 14 young women selected from over 100 countries for the next stage of the “FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars” event to be held from August 17 to 21 in France.
The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission named 14 girls from around the world on July 13 who will take part in the programme at the Circuit Paul Ricard for the next step. The worldwide selection took place after 146 National Federations (ASNs), nominated one promising young driver each with national or international racing experience. Shriya is the only Indian in the list selected for the Junior category of girls born between 31 March 2008 to 31 December 2010.
Shriya Lohia, 14, from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh made her debut in the Meco Rotax Max National Karting Championship in 2018 and soon started to compete on equal footing with boys in Bengaluru. She soon acquired international exposure in Italy and Malaysia and continued to take occasional podiums and earned a second place in the championship in her class in the X30 Nationals. On June 15, Shriya was once again awarded for “Excellence in Motorsports” among women during the fmsci Awards gala at Chennai, the third award after similar honours in 2018 and 2019 as an “Outstanding Woman in Motorsports”. But it is time Shriya, graduates to Formula cars to gain exposure in the tough selection process ahead.
The school girl, an avid Formula 1 fan, follows Charles Leclerc’s exploits on the speed lane and is a regular at the Meco Kartopia circuit in Bengaluru. A multi-faceted personality, Shriya is also good at scuba diving and takes parting in shooting as a relaxation sport to to train her “focusing” skills. A thinking person and a student journalist, she has her own blogging site and is known to be good at explaining the technical details of a race when called by the stewards unlike many skilled drivers of her age, who struggle to talk about their karts or a particular racing situation or incident.
Having been assessed on track in karts as well as off the track in various workshops, just four drivers in each category will be selected to participate in the decisive Ferrari Driver Academy karting and Formula 4 Scouting Camps in November.
At the end of the grueling training and selection process, the winning junior driver will participate in an international karting season with the financial support of the Ferrari Driver Academy. The selected senior driver will potentially become the third female to have the chance to join the Ferrari Driver Academy – following in the footsteps of Maya Weug and Laura Camps Torras, the winners of the first two editions – where she will begin development of a professional career in motor sport and compete in Formula 4 with the FIA Girls on Track main partner, the Iron Dames project.
Deborah Mayer, FIA Women in Motorsport Commission President, said: “I am pleased with this quality selection, which brings together talented young women from all over the world thanks to the essential detection and support work of our clubs. I would also like to thank all our partners: Ferrari Driver Academy, Iron Dames, Pirelli, OMP, Winfield, Circuit Paul Ricard, 321 performance. Each of them contributes greatly to the uniqueness and success of FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars. These 14 girls will have a wonderful and challenging experience that could put them on the road to professional careers. They are part of the next generation of female motor sport talent that the FIA is committed to promoting and helping make their dream possible.”

Rovanpera wins Rally Estonia: WRC
Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen have made it five wins in this season’s FIA World Rally Championship and their seventh in total with their second victory on Rally Estonia.
After scoring their first WRC career triumph in Estonia 12 months ago, the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT pair moved in front on Friday’s final stage and steadily pulled clear of their rivals to take top spot in their hybrid-powered Toyota GR Yaris Rally1.
They underlined their dominance by taking the rain-hit Wolf Power Stage with a winning margin of 22.5s to secure outright victory by 1m00.9s ahead of team-mates Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin. Home heroes Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja completed the podium for the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team.
With seven rounds run, Rovanperä and Halttunen head the provisional championship standings by 83 points. Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT head the provisional Manufacturers’ order by 87 points.
In the FIA WRC2 category defending champion Andreas Mikkelsen (Toksport WRT Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo) fought off Teemu Suninen’s late charge to take his third win of the season after Suninen reported his Hyundai Motorsport N-entered i20 N Rally2 dropped on to two cylinders during the final stage.
The day report, including details of the FIA WRC3 Junior winner, and the post-event press conference transcript will follow.

Harsh post-race penalty robs Daruvala of a ‘win’ in Austria
The 23-year-old was provisionally classified second but a 20-second penalty drops him down the classification
The Red Bull-backed racer was perfectly poised to inherit victory after provisional winner Verschoor was disqualified
SPIELBERG, 10 July 2022: Indian racer Jehan Daruvala put in a stirring drive from 11th to second in Sunday’s Formula 2 feature race in Austria but was robbed of his sixth podium of the season by a post-race penalty.
Jehan had finished a provisional second after an inspired strategy call to start the race on slick tyres on a damp track and searing pace from the Red Bull-backed racer in the tricky conditions saw him make rapid progress up the field.
But a 20-second time penalty, handed out after stewards deemed the Prema Racing team had attempted to dry the track surface at Jehan’s grid spot, negated his brilliant run.
The penalty was all the more disappointing as Jehan was briefly in with a chance of inheriting the race win after provisional winner Richard Verschoor was disqualified for a fuel irregularity.
Jehan said, “I’m absolutely gutted. All season luck has been against us and just when I thought things were finally going our way we get hit with a penalty.
We did everything right today. I was expecting a tough race from 11th on the grid and, while it was tricky, we read the conditions perfectly today. The team made the right strategy call on the tyres and I was able to maximise it with my pace in the wet. It’s difficult to find the positives after having a result we fought hard for taken away from us in this fashion. We could have taken big points off our rivals today but I can still take encouragement from my pace today. We now have a weekend off before the next run of back-to-back races and it’s now full focus on Paul Ricard and Budapest. We just need to keep pushing and I’m sure our day will come.”
Jehan’s pace in the changing conditions was formidable. He built up a sizeable gap and then timed his one and only pitstop to perfection, coming in on lap 13.
The penalty in Austria was the latest in a series of Sunday misfortunes that have cost Jehan a strong result in feature races this season.
An ill-timed safety car cost him a potential victory in Imola. In Barcelona an electrical problem sidelined Jehan on the fourth lap just when he was ideally placed to benefit from running the alternative strategy.

Jehan Daruvala finishes 7th in Feature race: F2
Silverstone, 3 July 2022: Indian racer Jehan Daruvala endured a character-building weekend at the Silverstone round of the Formula 2 championship as he finished outside the top-three for only the second time in seven rounds but still came away with a double points finish.
The 23-year-old finished 8th in the Sprint and 7th in the Feature race respectively, taking home a total of seven points on a weekend of damage limitation for the lead Red Bull-backed racer in the standings.
Jehan started Saturday’s Sprint race from pole on a wet track and established a comfortable early lead. But the car, set up for mixed conditions, did not allow the wet weather tyres to be used to their optimum which led to them overheating and Jehan struggling for grip. Prema team mate Dennis Hauger, who finished 15th, suffered similarly.
Fired up to make amends in Sunday’s Feature race, Jehan, starting on the harder prime tyre, decided to play the long game. He looked after his tyres during the early stages of the race and, while briefly in the lead, unleashed his speed as his pitstop approached.
He continued lighting up the timing screens on the grippier option tyre as he fought his way back up the order.
Jehan showed strong pace all weekend. But getting a strong result in Sunday’s Feature race was always going to be an uphill task, with Jehan starting 10th after the qualifying strategy of setting one flying lap per tyre set did not work as most of his rivals found more pace on their second ‘push’ laps
Jehan said, “This wasn’t our weekend but that’s motor-racing sometimes. While I’m naturally disappointed, there are still positives that we can take away. The next race at the Red Bull Ring is only a week away. It’s a home race for us Red Bull juniors. We’ve shown both pace and consistency over the course of this season and I’m confident we can bounce back next weekend in Austria.”
